Thick thick thick hair, what works?

My hair is making my life a misery, I've battled it for years now and I'm unwilling to accept I'll never have decent hair.
The strands are not coarse or thick, they are quite fine, but there is SO much of it. It's porous and takes an age to dry, so I end up air drying it, it's reasonable for a day then explodes into frizz.
It's curly at the back and straight at the front, I HATE it.
I feel like I've tried every cut, product and method known to man, but I'm willing to keep trying.
Has anyone got any suggestions or tips please, I'm really at the end of my tether.

Grow it as long as you can. It definitely pulls it into shape. Mine’s super thick and that wavy, frizzy texture, but it’s the best it’s ever been now as it’s the longest it’s ever been. I’ve also stopped brushing it, which sounds mad, but is working! I only brush it just before I wash it when it’s dry, never when it’s wet, and mostly leave it to air dry in the summer or apply Dream Lengths cream and roughly blow dry followed by loads of leave in conditioner spray. Only wash about twice a week too.

Yes, I struggled with mine when it was either short or short a short bob. I've been growing it over the last year and it's now at a length it takes care of itself (apart from blow drying with a paddle brush) as the weight pulls it into shape. Best thing I've done with it... only regret waiting so long to discover it!

  1. Use a shampoo brush to clean and massage your scalp. My hair became in a much better condition after starting using one!
  2. Don't use a hair dryer but wrap your hair up in a microfiber towel.
  3. Take fish oil supplements.

I have an undercut. It doesn't start from the very sides of my head and goes up in a triangle shape (as opposed to just straight across the bottom of my head if that makes sense) so when tied at the nape you'd not notice. I also keep my hair quite long so that the weight keeps the rest of it down. The undercut is what's made the most difference although I love the sound of the internal layers and might see if my hairdresser could do it!

AnotherFuckingUsername · 17/10/2020 13:59

Oh, I'm delighted you're happy @babbi Smile... despite being happy myself with anything I'd recommend there's always the worry that others expectations will fall short. Happy haircut Smile

I have super thick curly hair, I swear by no heat on it and let it dry naturally, it takes 24 hours to fully dry. I use shampoo and then shedloads of conditioner when I wash it.

Well, a combination of lockdown boredom and desperation led to me taking a scissors to my own hair, and what a result!

I basically tried to copy @AnotherFuckingUsername hairdresser and hacked absolutely loads of hair from the middle of my head, it absolutely doesn't show when hair is up or down, but has reduced my hair by about 50%, including drying time.

I did this as hairdressers kept saying they couldn't do it / didn't understand what I meant, and I think I'll stick to it now, and just go to the local cheapie salon for a trim on the lengths.

I'm planning to grow my hair longer now it's more manageable, flipping heck, this is actually life changing!

This is very interesting, I'm going to ask my hairdresser about internal layering. I love @hurtleandblister's shag cut too but know I couldn't pull it off, it'd just be a mullet. Grin When I grow my hair long then, sure, the weight pulls it down but it makes it lie so flat on my head my head ends up looking like the head of a match stuck into an upside down pear or something. I have a thinned out bob-ish cut now which is grand.

Have always thought I'd love to try short hair but feel like it has to be cut every week then to stay managable, I can just see myself waking up with it all standing straight up.

Great update @Darkestseasonofall and a beauty bravery award for going solo with scissors Smile - glad it paid off.

VanGoghsDog · 06/11/2020 11:36

I have a bob - my hair is very thick around the back with a low hairline. Annoyingly, the front, above my forehead has always been thin and is now thinning even more.

But the back has always needed what I now know to be called 'internal layers'. My hairdresser and I sort of worked this out together.

So, on the section above the nape of my neck, she chops into a section to layer and thin it, but the bottom layer and the top are cut to a single length. This takes the weight out and allows it to sit properly at the back.

I've had so many hair failures because of this and so many hairdressers won't listen to me. But my current one has got it fussed - even if I do have to listen to conspiracy theories for an hour!
