Help! Skin so dehydrated

My skin is screaming its so tight. I've been using hyaluronic acid for a fortnight now and my skin is really improved, but the feeling of my skin in the morning is driving me mad. The skin around my nose is so dry, flaky and itchy (probably due to the masks) . Was thinking of clinique moisture surge but I've read its more for younger skin. Im 46. Anyone have recommendations? Thanks.

I suffer from dry skin. I find layering a 'soft' moisturiser with an oil such as coconut oil over the top useful for sealing the moisture in. So I would do a serum (if using), moisturiser then oil.

I've been using this to counteract the effects of retanoid dryness, it's thick and soaks in overnight, my skin is very comfortable in the morning.

Oh very you reminded me niacinamide serum is very good to reduce moisture loss long term. The inky list make one with hyaluronic acid it's more suitable for dry skin than the zinc formulations.

Weleda skin food is very nourishing and easy on the purse. It’s a thick heavy cream that’s brilliant to slather on at night.

vintagenurse · 29/09/2020 10:51

I have dry skin and I use rosehip seed oil at night, which makes my skin lovely and soft. You can use a moisturiser as well

DiscombobulatedAf · 29/09/2020 10:57

You need to moisturise. Weleda skin food is good. Cerave healing ointment is fantastic at night as it’s very thick. Cetaphil lotion is also good. I have ridiculously dry skin and use squalane serum and niacinamide from the ordinary, cetaphil lotion and skin food during the day. I use Mandelic acid serum, cetaphil and cerave ointment with a drop of rosehip oil to seal everything in at night. Do NOT use coconut oil on your face. It is very comedogenic meaning it will block your pores and cause more issues.

DiscombobulatedAf · 29/09/2020 10:59

Using an oil without a moisturiser will not help. Your skin will still be dehydrated. Oil is not a moisturiser it’s a sealant so you need to use a moisturiser before an oil. I see a lot of women using oil only wondering why their skin isn’t improving. If you have flaking I’d recommend acid exfoliation once a month. I use a glycolic acid peel and my skin is the best it’s ever been. You could also use a acid toner every few days if you don’t want to use a peel. Or maybe give retinol a try

JemimaTiggywinkle · 29/09/2020 11:08

I’m hoping that you use the hylauronic acid first, and then a moisturiser on top?

I’ve never got on with moisture surge personally, I use the classic yellow Clinique dramatically different moisturiser (the cream, definitely not the gel one).

Serum first, few minutes to let it soak in, and then moisturiser

How much water are you drinking? That has a massive impact on your skin. You can moisturise from the outside with creams etc, but you also need to hydrate from inside.

I use Vaseline as my last step every night just before bed.

I used to wake up with really really tight skin but I don't anymore! Such a relief

I agree with all this but I would suggest using mandelic with retinol!

I would use the moisture surge under a proper heavy moisturiser, then squalane then Vaseline

This stuff is really good! www.boots.com/eucerin-aquaphor-soothing-skin-balm-40ml-10131555

SoddingWeddings · 29/09/2020 11:47

What are you washing your face with as well? Many products completely strip the oils.

FinallyHere · 29/09/2020 11:52

Another vote for drinking three litres of water a day. Boring but effective.

That's been debunked. Being dehydrated can affect the skin, but just staying within normal hydration levels is all that's necessary. The body will get rid of anything above and beyond and you'll just be going to the loo 100 times a day.
Feckinlego · 29/09/2020 13:39

Thanks all, yes should have said I use a moisturiser! Using cerave atm which isn't bad. Drink loads of water but between a wwwkend wine habit, wearing a mask all day, and poor ventilation at work, I need a heavy hitting moisturiser! Double cleanse at night too with a balm plus a cream. But some great tips here. Thanks all.
