GHD Rise Hot Brush

Does anyone have one of these and can tell me if it's any good? Wondering if I'm about to spend money on something gimmicky or if it really works.

I'm pretty shit at styling my hair, not good with curling (tongs or straightener.) I have very fine, fluffy hair that I usually dry and then straighten with my Cloud 9. It looks nice straightened but is very flat, despite the shitloads of different products I've used over the years.
I'd love volume and a bit of movement!

Following because I've just ordered one as I had some JL vouchers. I figured if it's crap I'll just send it back? JL are pretty decent with returns and it's a lot of money for something it I don't use it. Fingers crossed - I'll keep you posted once I get it and give it a go!

I've got a Revlon hot air brush, love it. Gets great reviews and is big enough to put volume in hair. I'll never go back to a brush and hairdryer combo

Waaay cheaper than the GHD

GnTplease · 01/10/2020 11:39

@cravingthelook I think the ghd is a bit different? Small barrel, hard plastic bristles and not a dryer. I used to have the babyliss big hair which is decent and similar to the revlon but doesn't work on hair past shoulder length and doesn't curl. The ghd is supposed to ad volume and do a curly blow dry look I think. We shall see when it arrives tomo!

I’ve bought the Revamp Progloss Perfect Finish hot brush - I can’t see the difference between it and the GHD Rise, which I was looking to buy but it just didn’t get good enough reviews for £169! The Revamp is £50, 5 digital heat settings up to 210 degrees, retractable bristles, ceramic and I think it’s great. I swear by the GHD straighteners which I use to heat/gloss my hair before I insert Velcro rollers, so it’s my own take on heated rollers😂 I just couldn’t justify £169 for a hot brush, so purchased the Revamp - got mine from Very, but it’s available from Argos, Boots, Amazon - read the reviews, they’re all good.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 01/10/2020 12:09

A lot of influencers got sent this and I recall one who seemed honest and said it was fiddly to use and the results weren't as good as the GHD wave tong. All the others showed it once and raved about it lol.

GnTplease · 02/10/2020 12:56

Ok so I just received it and tried it out...the jury is out. I think it's going to take some practice to see how to use it best for my hair (poker straight, soft and fine) but I'm pretty happy with first go. Like a bouncy blowdry effect. It definitely doesn't do full on curls like a wand, more of a wave.

I’ve got the revlon brush.
It is amazing, it turns my fine but frizzled mess of a mop into a swishy, shiny do.

thesecangettofuck · 04/10/2020 01:19

Oh amazing I didn't think I had any replies.

See I have a Dyson Airwrap (which I can't believe I spent that much money on) and I use the round brush for volume. But my hair isn't smooth after. I have baby fine hair. I've thought about the Revlon brush but I don't know if it's my hair type that's the problem or if it's actually better than the Dyson.

Currently my routine goes dry hair (Dyson) with volume product in it, straightener to smooth it, Dyson again to try and get back some of the volume the straightener has killed. It takes ages.

I'd love to smooth it out without losing the volume. And maybe get some wave in it but I'm not putting all my hopes on that as I'm shit at curling/waving.

@GnTplease see that's amazing! I could never get my hair to look like that!

I've read this about the Revlon but having spent a stupid amount on the Dyson I don't know if I can spend more on something that might be the same?!

Reading with interest, have been pondering on getting the GHD Rise after seeing rave reviews.

Was actually thinking of posting a thread like this to see if anyone on MN had tried it yet.

Had a Dyson hairdryer which was disappointing and broke after 18 months so I'm a bit sceptical about splashing out on expensive tools but seriously tempted to give it a go.

cravingthelook · 04/10/2020 07:14

@thesecangettofuck I think your problem (as you know) is you are using straightners to smooth. They knock any body out your hair. I struggle to blow dry my hair like they do at the salon, hence getting the blow dryer/brush in one to smooth and dry at the same time.

I'm curious though, what is it about the air wrap that you aren't keen on?

thesecangettofuck · 04/10/2020 08:16

@cravingthelook I thought the Dyson would give me the blow dry smooth look. I can get volume with the round attachment but it's fluffy. The curling attachments are pointless for me as you need to use them
on wet hair. If I try to use them to curl my hair wet I get frizzy curls.

Also it's needed repairs twice in 18 months and Dyson customer service has been complete shite. I won't ever buy another product of theirs, put me right off them.

GnTplease · 04/10/2020 08:42

@thesecangettofuck so after a bit more practice I do like it but it's definitely a knack. So I start about 2 inch from the root and roll it back and hold for a few secs then unroll and kindof pull it down through the hair and twist it round the brush as I go. Have to make sure hair has been brushed through first or it pulls a bit but the result is lovely and smooth and has lasted pretty well.

Rina66 · 04/10/2020 08:50

I have the Dyson air wrap too, agree the round brush leaves my hair fluffy but I am prone to fluffiness! The smoothing brush is good after using the round brush though, just through the top sections or you lose all of the volume. I also have it on medium heat and medium ‘blow’ - if it’s too hot and fast, my hair just looks like straw.

I can kind of picture what you've done but I obviously am just not very coordinated.

I ended up buying one today and have tried it a few times. So far I have given myself a weird kink and got my hair tangled around the brush. I've had two gin and tonics though

The smoothing brush is good I agree. But still not smooth enough for me to want to leave the house, I'm still itching to run my straightener through it. I haven't tried it after the round brush, I'll give that a go.

Perhaps it’s an expectation thing? The GHD straighteners are so good at smoothing but the down side is the flattening effect. I’ve watched a few you tube videos of how to get volume using straighteners, pulling the hair out, bending at the ends and flicking it up in the opposite direction to cool - they are good but I still find using Velcro rollers with clips immediately after straightening each section, giving a heated roller effect - so smooth and volume.

cravingthelook · 04/10/2020 10:08

@Rina66 that sounds like it would look nice, but I'm way too lazy 😁😁

Rina66 · 04/10/2020 10:18

I only wash my hair twice a week so it’s not too much of a faff. It’s fairly quick to put the rollers in and I just mooch around in them until I’m ready to leave the house.

I use the Revamp Progloss inbetween times or spray a bit of GHD heat protection spray and blow dry quickly. I do find if I blow dry properly after I wash my hair, use the straighteners and rollers, it’s easier to manage on a daily basis - alas once it’s pouffed up it tends to stay that way until the next wash.

wizzbangfizz · 04/10/2020 10:25

I've got the air wrap and love it for curls but have not perfected a swishy blow dry yet which is frustrating.

Beachlovingirl · 04/10/2020 10:42

I saw the revlon one step recommended on here and went for it. Literally changed my life.
I have below shoulder fine hair that loves any opportunity to go fluffy. The one step just makes it smooth and swishy. My 12 year old with fine hair has also taken to it because it’s pretty quiet and super quick. I don’t have any more than 15 mins to spend drying my hair so this is perfect.
I watched a review of the air wrap v the revlon and though the results were good for both (air wrap gave more curl) it did take the reviewer 1 hour to do her hair versus the 18 mins with the revlon. This sealed the deal for me.

Ghd wise though that looks lovely on you op and a nice gentle curl too. How long does it take to fully use that to do your hair?

GnTplease · 04/10/2020 10:46

@Beachlovingirl now I've got the knack it took me less than 10 mins - but I was being lazy and didn't section my hair off and did quite big pieces. I think if I spent a bit more time and used smaller bits it would be more curly. I like that you don't have to spend very long with the heat actually on your hair - it seems to give it the curl really quickly compared to a tong.

rainyoctober · 04/10/2020 17:33

I have it and my hair turns out pretty similar to GnTplease's

I personally love it because it gives the look I want which is a fake blow dry. I bought it for that reason alone and it gives me that so I am happy. I can understand people being disappointed if they wanted something more versatile.

I also have the Babyliss Big Hair but my hair texture is too frizzy for it, I need to do proper heat styling for my hair to remain smooth, a hair dryer just doesn't cut it.
