What style and beauty tricks did you discover during lockdown?

I couldn't get out to buy new stuff and money was tight so I decided to use up what I had in the bathroom cupboards.
I found that shower gel washes my hair and makes it softer than shampoo. Sticking with this.
And that hand and body lotion removes mascara.
What did you discover?

Cutting my own fringe.

YouBigFool · 26/09/2020 14:48

Not tricks exactly, but I used up all my samples that I was saving for best. It felt like a treat.

justhereforthecraic · 26/09/2020 14:52

washing my hair with shampoo twice before conditioner!! game changer ( and yes....im probably late to the party on this one..)

Also discovered that i can tint my own eyebrows! god bless Amazon Grin

dudsville · 26/09/2020 15:03

I found an old tube of EA8hr and remembered MNers talking about vaseline on face. I tried this, it's been a wonderful nightly treat for my skin.

TheRIDs · 26/09/2020 15:05

Cut my own fringe...and I liked my cut better than my hairdressers!

justanothernameonthewall · 26/09/2020 15:20

I've started cutting my hair using the mums net method. My hair's long so it comes out with lovely face framing layers at the front. Don't think I'll visit a hairdresser again!

KTD27 · 26/09/2020 15:20

Finally FINALLY learnt how to use my babyliss volume wave thingy. It’s 150 years old but I can (sort of) now do it. Months of lockdown trying and failing but I’m there 95% of the time.

RiskIt4Biscuit · 26/09/2020 17:15

That I quite like a capsule wardrobe.
I managed to have a bit of a clearout in my wardrobe, and have experimented with new outfits that I wouldn't have worn before, as I've lost a bit of weight recently.

I have also learnt to cut my husband's hair, and he likes it so much he doesn't want to go to the hairdresser anymore.

The joy of heated rollers

MandosHatHair · 26/09/2020 17:22

Because I wasn't going out, I didn't use quite so many skincare products and my skin is very much happier for it.

BellsofStClems · 26/09/2020 17:28

I found new outfit combinations for my existing pjs.

Also found that not wearing makeup did nothing to improve my skin. Bring back the foundation trowel.

Disorganisedfish · 26/09/2020 17:37

Lots mentioned here - babyliss big hair is amazing and people keep asking me if I have extensions in now. I also dyed my hair dark after 30 years bleaching it blonde. It suits me SO much more! Dying my eyebrows at home and dermaplaining with those razer thingies off amazon.

Using my Phillips lumea and the ordinary acid mask were also game changers!

madderose · 26/09/2020 17:40

I focused more on skincare and less on make up and I feel that my skin is loads better

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 26/09/2020 18:13

No tricks as such but I suppose I did a lot of self discovery, I went part time down to 2 days a week right at the start of lockdown, so while I still worked I was at home a lot more.

I decluttered my wardrobe, skincare, haircare and makeup maybe four times and really nailed down everything I like and use or wear.

My makeup and skincare collection is the most minimal it’s ever been and I feel like I finally got over my shopping addiction mentality!

silentpool · 26/09/2020 18:26

I've been dyeing my hair with eSalon dye and doing my eyebrows and eyelashes as well. I don't think I will pay to get them done again. I used the time to get started with Dermatica retinol and got my skin purging and flaking done in private. I've been working through my stash of beauty stuff and have decided to have less, but better quality stuff as my skin hates fragrances etc. I did curly girl and weaned myself off shampoo to a large extent. My hair can go 1-2 weeks between shampoos although there are co-washes and some dry shampoo applications in there too.

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 26/09/2020 18:33

I stopped replacing skincare products and am now down to a cleanser and one oil. My skin has never looked better. Though that may equally be due to stuffing my face with good food, being exposed to less pollution and getting inordinate amounts of sleep ...

MutteringDarkly · 26/09/2020 18:33

Cut my own hair (getting quicker every time, the first one took aaaaaaages!) it's a perfectly neat bob and I can't see me going back to getting it done elsewhere.

Ditto DIY eyebrows - but I need to put reminders in my calendar (as the old appointments used to be regular) to re-do them, otherwise every so often they look a bit alarming Grin

ShaunaTheSheep · 26/09/2020 18:40

Like most people, replacing bras with vest tops with the built in support.
But then, I accidently put one on inside out so the elastic band was on the outside with the t-shirt layer next to my skin. So much more comfortable and stops the elastic digging in.

So, my trick is to wear your secret support vests inside out if not going to be on show.

polkadotpjs · 26/09/2020 19:41

Ooh I need some of those vests. Tell me which are best please !
I learned that I don't look that horrific on screen with the Zoom filter and distance so then get a shock in the real mirror
I too have used up a lot of my nice stuff. I found a small almond soap by loccitane which is ace

paperribbon · 26/09/2020 19:48

@justhereforthecraic
I'd love to know how to do the MN haircut. Please share. Thanks

OP posts:
Paperdolly · 26/09/2020 20:08

Me too! Re the haircut.

I changed my make up to a more natural peachy look rather than 70s blue eyes. I look younger and healthier. ... I think. 😊

GVmama · 26/09/2020 20:54

Is the Mumsnet haircut similar to the unicorn haircut of my youth?

paperribbon · 26/09/2020 20:55

@polkadotpjs

There's a filter on zoom? Wish I'd known that! Everyone else looked lovely, now I know why! I looked feral.

SpeckledyHen · 26/09/2020 21:30

I bought too much jojoba oil when I made some beeswax wraps and discover it was a fantastic evening moisturiser .

nevernotstruggling · 26/09/2020 22:12

@paperribbon

Whaaaaat???
