Mason and Pearson hairbrushes

I have a very old Mason and Pearson hairbrush, it's probably about 30 years old!

I want to replace it as the rubber is starting to crack but new ones are around £60 - £90!

It's probably a good investment bearing in mind this one lasted so long but just wondering if there are any other brands I might consider.

I have a tangle teaser, was really sceptical at first but it glides through my hair without pulling. I really rate it; and you can wash it! I have a babyliss vented round brush as well with a big barrel. Hi

I think if its something you know you like and is a good investment, buy it! Something else won't compare to what you're used to and then you end up spending more buying something else, and then the product anyway. (I'm not particularly frivolous!) The cost per use will be minimal.
In opposition to PP I felt like tangle teezer was a horrible piece of plastic that snapped a lot of my hair.

kentbrushes.com/collections/ladies-finest-hairbrushes

these are lovely brushes

Jedstre · 24/09/2020 20:13

I haven’t actually ever used a Mason and Pearson hairbrush, so I can’t compare, but I do have a Kent brush, similar to linked above and it’s a good natural bristle brush. I’d be slightly worried that the new version of M&P wouldn’t be quite the same as your beloved 30 year old brush.

Comfyonion · 24/09/2020 20:17

I have a Mason and Pearson hairbrush, it's probably 6 years old so whilst not new it is more modern. And the quality is still excellent. I wanted one because I grew up using my mum's (which she still has) and always loved it. I do have a tangle teezer for my handbag though which is great too, but imo the M&P brush is the best

EraOfTheGrey · 24/09/2020 21:13

I would replace my Mason & Pearson because its a great brush and I know its going to last me a long time, worth the investment in my opinion. But, if I was on a budget I would recommend this Aveda brush

Geppili · 24/09/2020 21:24

I couldn't be without my MP. It's an investment.

trunumber · 24/09/2020 21:42

Can someone tell me how they're different to any other brush?

Floralnomad · 24/09/2020 21:51

My daughter has a MP brush and it is lovely , it’s about 6/7 yrs old and still as good as new . She used to have a Kent brush which was also very good but definitely didn’t wear as well ( I use it for the dog now) . I have a Manta brush as my hair falls out by the handful and it does help although I was sceptical .

I bought mine from https://www.escentual.com/mason-pearson-brushes/ I signed up to their newsletter and waited until they had one of their regular 20% off everything sales
It's made a real difference to my unruly 'kinked' hair - much smoother and more manageable

Lily193 · 24/09/2020 22:02

I've tried many different brands but nothing comes close to M&P brushes for my long hair. Well worth the investment.

TheGinGenie · 24/09/2020 22:09

Also a fan, I've had mine for at least 20 years and it's good as new. I think they're worth the investment

Laiste · 24/09/2020 22:15

Why are they worth it? Genuine interest.

I paid what i felt was quite a lot for a Kent hair brush last year. It was crap! I use it on the cat's tails now!

The brushes i use on me (and DD's bum length hair) are less than a tenner.

they're so gentle. Very flexible. Don't pull your hair out at all and glide through tangles. Got three of them. Upstairs, downstairs and handbag :)

orangenasturtium · 24/09/2020 22:22

They have natural bristles or a mix of natural bristles and nylon on a patented flexible rubber pad, @trunumber. That means they are very gentle, they don't pull your hair or cause breakages or static, they are great at detangling, the flexible cushion and soft bristles are supposed to massage your scalp and increase blood flow, the bristles are better at redistributing oil from the roots to make your hair shiny (and less greasy). You aren't supposed to use them on wet hair though (although they do make a brush for wet hair without natural bristles).

I do have a tangle teaser for wet hair but my Mason & Pearson Brush is so much gentler. I can really feel the difference. Any other brush just rips and pulls my hair or gets stuck in a giant tangle so I have to extricate the brush.

They also last forever. I'm only on my third in almost 50 years but that's only because the previous 2 got lost stolen at school and at the gym. And look lovely.

I think it's worth the investment once you calculate the "cost per use" @bendmeoverbackwards

trunumber · 24/09/2020 22:54

Ah thank you for that. I comb my wet hair in the shower so probably not massively useful for me. They always looked like a luxury treat though

Housewife2010 · 25/09/2020 06:06

I love my MP brushes. I have tried tangle teasers and wet brushes and they don't compare to MPs. Like a previous poster I was going to recommend signing up for Escentual.com emails. I bought my large MP a few years ago from there with 25% off. Both my MPs are mixed bristle. I originally bought the handbag size to try it out as they are so expensive. I loved it so much I bought the full size the following year.

Sasuma · 25/09/2020 07:50

Just keep in mind that these are boar bristle brushes; I wouldn’t personally want to purchase one. M&P boar bristle is apparently sourced from naturally shed hair (fine) as well as the meat industry in China and India (specifically not places with good animal welfare standards although I personally don’t support the meat industry anywhere).

You can get natural bristles made from plant materials, in case OP or anyone else is interested.

Madbengalmum · 25/09/2020 16:22

I have a 40 yr old MP and it is still perfect. Go for the same again

CamelotSweetheart · 25/09/2020 16:27

I have a Denman hairbrush which looks and acts like a Mason Pearson but leaves my hair slightly more static. I will treat myself to a MP again when I am feeling flush. As you say, they do last very well.

bendmeoverbackwards · 25/09/2020 18:02

Thank you all, looks like I will be buying myself a new one!

I use my old one on DDog!
