Camoflage print for baby boys - tasteful or not?

A friend has bought DS (8mo)a fleece snowsuit in a camoflage print. But then I wondered whether this could border on chavvy. It is very soft and muted in colour, so perhaps is OK? Can't find it online to link to. Both friend and I now in a quandry - could we be dooming cute DS (and ourselves by association) to a label of chavvy-ness?! I'm used to girly things so am now in a flap. If I keep it do I need to get him hair gel and a Greggs dummy to match?

In our defence, we are both usually fairly stylish and dress our DCs 'nicely' - usual mix of Gap, Boden, supermarket stuff, Boots brands etc. Hhmmmmm, waddya think?

and did you know that pre khaki/camoflage that many armies wore red because it "hid" the blood from injured troops!

Greensleeves · 10/10/2007 20:07

Interesting QoQ, but the fact that most people DO see it as military renders it inappropriate for children IMO.

DS has some camoflage shorts from Boden. I think of them more as the kind of thing he might wear if he were birdwatching to be honest.

MadamePlatypus · 10/10/2007 20:16

"camouflage"

gymgirl · 16/10/2007 08:30

So this is a present? How kind of your friend to give you it. Put it on your child and say thankyou. What is your problem???

And a definition of a chav is someone who doesn't have any idea themself what they like and has to ask others then just follow the trend.

Indeed get a life.

PS I hope your friend doesn't read this tripe. I'd be very upset.

seeker · 16/10/2007 08:33

Not chavvy - whatever that means - but won't let my boy wear anything militaristic or with anything aggressive on it. I also won't let my girl wear trousers with "cute" written across the bottom or t shirts with the playboy bunny on them.

Cant see anything wrong with camoflage stuff myself. Dd has a pair of camo trousers nad so do I.GReat for playing hide and seek and being 'esplorers in the jungle' and lots of other games. I think its a bit sad that people look at camoflage and cant see beyond the first thought of army rather than explorer or birdwatcher. Its a bit like looking at a kid in a cute leather flying jacket (liek dss had) and saying he must be imitating Biggles of the RFC rather than Lindburgh or someone like that. Limited thinking IMO

jamila169 · 16/10/2007 08:55

Camo does depend on the context - if it's head to toe 'real' camo with boots and gold jewellry, coupled with a grade 2 haircut then it screams 'my dad is a clueless chav who thinks i'll grow up gay if i don't look hard'
on the other hand, nothing wrong with a bit of subtle camo - Boden do it!

Thanks for articulating that much better than I did Jamila.
Interesting that the 'ch' term seem to have a slightly different meaning where I live compared to some of the definitions here. This term and camouflage clothing seem very polarising. Thanks for all the great opinions.

gymgirl - my attempt to canvass opinions was real, with 2 DDs not really thought about this before. My reaction has surprised me a bit too as I'm very clear on what DDs wear eg no playboy range for example. But much of what I wrote was tongue in cheek, should have put a wink in. It's not a gift but yes, a very kind thought from a good friend. We've discussed this too and has it has sparked further discussions for her also. Going shopping for a life today

A chav is someone who needs to ask someone else whether they should like something and has so little clue about their own tastes as to be a mindless follower of a fashion. Familiar?

gymgirl · 16/10/2007 11:54

OK!!! Enough is enough!

Best wishes

I like baby boys to look like ...well... babies - so lots of pale colours here and he looks so grown up in jeans and dungarees - prefer him in joggers and tops!

But that is only my opinion! One woman on the school run still dresses her LO in babygrows - he is nearly 7 months - her choice but I think of them as pj's!

TheBlonde · 20/10/2007 21:10

I quite like camouflage stuff - DS had camouflage trousers and an army tshirt from his godmother's then boyf - it looked cute

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 21/10/2007 23:52

Not fussed by camouflage - DH runs around in it half the time after all - but I don't like it for babies. It's too harsh.
