Roots refusing to take colour

Hi
I have always had my hair professionally highlighted with foils. But funds will no longer allow so i started home colouring. I always go safe and stick to colours close to my natural mousey ash blonde. I started with Avon as they were half price but found the colour would never take on the roots so I started leaving it longer but the same thing happened. You could see the greys just days after colouring. So I swapped to Garnier Nutrisse and not only did the roots refuse to take again but the smell was so strong it gave me a banging head!! Now i have Claitol to use next time.
Does anyone know what i can do, if anything, to cover those pesky greys? Where am I going wrong? Or maybe my hair is just too thick and strong to take a home dye.
Thanks x

I tried eSalon and think it's worth a shot if you haven't tried it before. It comes through the post.

I use Olia by Garnier. I only dye my hair because I want to hide my greys and it works for me.

Calyx72 & clockwatcher247 thank you. I've just bought 2 Clairol boxes as it was on offer but fear the same will happen. Will keep your suggestions in mind Smile

Hate to say it but I never found anything that worked so when I decided I couldn't justify hair salon prices any more, I went grey instead.

What about a home hairdresser?

I believe that there comes a time when the greys become just so hard to cover and it becomes time to embrace them. I had to do that 3 years ago. It’s now fully grown and and ever so happy

Tried esalon and the greys showed through instantly. I then tried clairol root touch up and left it on for way longer than recommended (i think 45 mins in total). Anyway 2 weeks later and still no grey!

You could get professional salon colour from Sally’s? I had a similar issue and actually asked my hairdresser, and she said box dyes are nowhere near as powerful. She was kind and told me the colours to get, and also the brand - I mix two shades with peroxide, do the roots for about 20 minutes, pull it through the mid-lengths for 10, then down to the ends for another 10.

The people in Sally’s were super helpful, and told me which strength of peroxide I needed. The lady also recommended a kit with a tint bowl, tint brush, and a tail comb, which I bought, but you could use a pudding bowl really if you have a tint brush. I buy packs of Covid type gloves from Boots, and actually now buy the colour from eBay, although I find the branded peroxide seems to work better than generic ones.

I use Wells Koleston Perfect, and their branded peroxide.

L’Oreal majirel has covered my greys ( a lot of them ) fab for a couple of years.

I purchased it from salonsdirect.com with peroxide.

I'm now going platinum blonde as I just can't keep up with the greys, hair grows like bloody tumbleweed & they now need doing every 3 weeks. I've been blonde previously & loved it, had an outgrown ombré hence having to do the roots.

My roots are grey and I have to bleach them to have any hope of colour taking

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/09/2020 23:04

My hairdresser recommended Marjirel, artyfarty, but the Sally’s woman suggested the Wella would be better. My greys are all underneath, at my hairline, and my hair’s cut in a blunt Bob with a heavy fringe, so I can stretch it out, but if they were at a parting I would be every three weeks too. My fringe comes from my crown, and fortunately none there!

I agree with pp that eventually dye just stops working.
I have resistant grey. I used to use the touch up dye and keep it on for way longer but even then it only lasted 2 weeks (and not all of the greys covered).
I then went back to letting the hair dresser do it but the longest I got was 10 days before I was using the cover up spray.
I've decided to embrace the grey as the thought of colouring it constantly was making me miserable

Thanks for the posts everyone. Just catching up. Mine is def getting worse with age..like everything in fact! It's just the roots that are completely colour resistant. I'm going to have to embrace the grey I guess!

@Girlintheframe... I can't see the point in spending nearly £100 on it at the salon as you say the root colour lasts about 10-14 days! I'm going to have to colour it every 3 weeks but surely that can't be good for it.
