Lush staff, pushy and hardsell and new higher prices..

Went into lush today , browsed the soaps..now sold by the slice and not weight so seemed dearer but the staff hovered relentlessly and suggested every soap on display and enthused about each one... I found them very pushy and false... never used to be like that in there... and all items have gone up in price...are they on comission now ??..I find similar soaps on line now and cheaper and just as nice !!

Lush staff have always been pushy IME.

Aebj · 20/09/2020 02:31

Used to love Lush products. I found a local lady that makes soap, bath bombs and a few other nice things. Her products are much nicer and cheaper. Go to a local market , you’ll be happier!!!

Zoflorabore · 20/09/2020 02:48

I went to the Lush store in Liverpool last week as I promised dd (9) some new bombs and stuff when we were doing the back to school shopping.

That shop is beyond huge and not well thought out. I also thought that the prices seemed more expensive than usual and interestingly we were not approached once by any staff.

Monty27 · 20/09/2020 02:52

Body shop went that way too over time

earsup · 20/09/2020 02:54

I rarely go so it's been several years since I went in..staff were a bit gushing over products then but today she persisted in shoving soaps in my face to smell.. I always leave shops when the staff are really pushy...

I hate going in there now. They ask open-ended questions, which leaves me with a choice: engage (no way!) or try to answer in a way that closes off any further discussion.

This actually stresses me out as a person who has mild social anxiety and doesn't enjoy chit chat with strangers about the loveliness of soap.

Note to lush headquarters: Leave me alone and I will probably buy something. Make me feel like a social failure on a saturday afternoon and it will two years before I go in your shop again.

And it is ALL lush shops...even abroad.

LemonSqueezy0 · 20/09/2020 03:22

I used to work there and they make you approach everyone within a certain time frame of coming in Blush I had to aim to get you to engage by making you smell or touch the item, so rub it on your skin with a hand massage, get you involved in demonstrations, push the products and offer advice based on insecurities... "my hair used to look dry like yours, I used X, y and Z and it's now much better... Also offer a basket so you'd be more likely to buy and walk around with you.... It was much more of a hard sell environment than I thought it would be...

zigzagbetty · 20/09/2020 03:25

I never go into Lush now due to this sales approach. Used to love their stuff but I hate enforced interaction and not being left just to browse.

Ritascornershop · 20/09/2020 03:59

I’ve always found Lush to be like this. I feel badly for their staff as it’s got to be emotionally wearing being forced to be this false all day.

Shooglywheel · 20/09/2020 04:23

If you know what you want just buy it online.

AnnaMagnani · 20/09/2020 08:08

There are many many people making soap and bath bombs. Just find someone local to you on google/etsy/your local market and enjoy that you are supporting a small business too.

Leafbeans · 20/09/2020 08:10

I've tried lots of smaller businesses that sell bath bombs, but annoyingly I can't find any that I like as much as those from Lush. I don't set foot in there though partly due to the pushy staff and partly as I don't like some of the things they align themselves with, or the way they (apparently) treat their staff. I have done a few orders online though, but ahhh.

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 20/09/2020 08:11

I find their sales technique unbearable so stopped going into their shops about 2 years ago. Plenty of alternatives online.

hammeringinmyhead · 20/09/2020 08:12

I stopped going into store a good 6 or 7 years ago, partly due to the ridiculous price increases since I was shopping there in the early 00s but mostly due to the sales tactics. Even earphones in don't stop them.

CountessFrog · 20/09/2020 08:13

I no longer go in either, for this reason

wifflewafflebiscuit · 20/09/2020 08:17

I stopped going there some time ago as the pushy staff make me so uncomfortable

FelicityPike · 20/09/2020 08:18

I was one of Lush’s earliest customers (back when it was cosmetics to go). I toured their factory and everything. Had a huge stash, the lot.
THEN their prices crept up and crept up and they “protested” against the police and “encouraged” their staff to go naked while working (to promote their naked, no plastics range) and that was basically it for me.
I still go in now and then but very rarely buy anything now.
They’ve definitely got greedy.

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 20/09/2020 08:21

Even my DD, she was given a Lush voucher for £30 for her 11th birthday and she found the thought of going into their shop to spend it too stressful. I went in with her but to 'shield' her it was a very unpleasant experience.

BunnyLovesBananas · 20/09/2020 08:25

Same

Interested in websites that you day are better OP

GrapeSodas · 20/09/2020 08:27

I went in the Croydon one the other day and they weren't pushy. They were fine. I bought the pumpkin bath bomb and marshmallow world one as a special treat for myself. I buy bath bombs from elsewhere but do find lush ones better. I cut a little bit off each time so they last for ages.

SerenityNowwwww · 20/09/2020 08:30

I stopped buying before all the political nonsense started - their stuff was expensive, staff in your face and the bath bombs: dyed DS blue, gets glitter stuck in your nethers, clogs up the plug hole with paper, rose petals or any other stuff they sweep up off the factory floor and add to the mix, and the green frothy stuff was like swamp water (with foam).

lazylinguist · 20/09/2020 08:31

I don't buy from them any more due to their various practices. I'm not fussed about bath bombs, so I buy solid shampoo from my local zero waste shop and soap from TK Maxx or online.

SerenityNowwwww · 20/09/2020 08:32

I now buy shampoo and soap by the bucket from an online ‘green’ company.

Losing · 20/09/2020 08:34

I’d love to stop using LUSH re: their questionable campaigns and pushy staff, but au just can’t find an alternative.

I HATE that flowery waxy smell all other bath bombs and products seem to have, even from the ‘natural ingredients only’ alternative websites I’ve tried.

Coniferhedge · 20/09/2020 08:37

Future Primitive is a good alternative to Lush. She doesn’t make bath bombs, but her other stuff is gorgeous. I’ve tried the soap, whipped soap and perfume oil and they’ve all been lovely.
