Down coat - do I need a long one really?

I feel the cold and DS plays football and I think it's time for a down jacket! DH has a Uniqlo one which is fab - I just showed him ones I was looking at and he told me he's already got me one for Christmas! Lovely man. Only thing is it's short one - I was thinking I'd need one that covered my arse! Thoughts? I feel awful for ruining his surprise!

How short, some are very short? You could get lined walking trousers, with fleece inside. Personally watching football if you are standing or sitting still I would happily wear the short jacket and a long one on top Grin i love my duvet long coat ! If you walk about then you might be warmer.

It's this one, which is lovely, but short, and I'm tall and long in the body!

He got my favourite colour and everything but they don't do that colour in the long version...

Just have a look about down and where they get the feathers from. Almost all are taken from live birds and cause huge stress and pain.

Toontown · 17/09/2020 16:26

I take that back many have improved over the last few years. Just check your sources!

Panticles · 17/09/2020 16:38

I have one of each. Short for Spring/Autumn and long for winter.

IHeartKingThistle · 17/09/2020 16:39

Well we're talking about a jacket that's already in my house so not a lot I can do about that one! But if I look at others I promise to check Smile

I find bum covering essential for proper warmth! I have a marmot puffa which is sooo warm and their down is not taken from live birds.

ChilliBeanSauce · 17/09/2020 16:45

If your out on a frozen pitch you will need a coat to cover (atleast) your bum !

perfumeistooexpensive · 17/09/2020 16:47

I have two. The short jacket is great with jeans on milder winter days. The long one completely covers my bum and is essential waiting in the freezing school playground. You definitely need two!

wuickquestion · 17/09/2020 16:48

I'm impressed by Uniqlo prices. I wonder how warm they are. My last few long ones were Timberland, but I don't think they make them anymore and I do need a replacement.

Evilwasps · 17/09/2020 16:50

A long one would be better, it's like wearing a cosy sleeping bag!

Annasgirl · 17/09/2020 16:52

Long puffs coat is essential for taking DC to sport in winter. Mine is my down filled as I am allege so you can get man made filling. Also fleece lined boots or fleece socks inside wellies.

BikeRunSki · 17/09/2020 17:03

I have several fine jackets of different weights - all waist length though. My football watching Jacket is the thickest it’s also fairly water resistant

Annasgirl · 17/09/2020 17:11

Sorry for typos- in garden wth puppy. Mine is not down filled. And it is a puffer coat.

IHeartKingThistle · 17/09/2020 17:19

DH's Uniqlo is amazing - I've never even tried on a down coat but I grabbed it last year for a school run and couldn't believe I wasn't shivering!

Think I might get myself a long one then and let DH surprise me with the little yellow one at Christmas - sound like a solution? Wink

I have both and they are both useful. I would never have bought a long one myself but I inherited it from my mum.

I don't wear it very often but that's because when I'm out and about, I am usually moving but if I were in your shoes and had to stand around in the freezing cold watching football matches, I can imagine I'd wear it a lot more.

XingMing · 17/09/2020 20:30

A borrowed lightweight Uniqlo down gilet probably saved my DS from hypothermia a few years ago, even though he was wet. I washed and tumbled it dry before handing it back. It looked as good as new. So yes, they are invaluable. And very warm.
