Boycott Jo Malone + recommend me an alternative?

I won't be buying Jo Malone again after this, which I wanted to share for anyone who may not have seen it - www.theguardian.com/film/2020/sep/15/john-boyega-quits-role-as-jo-malone-brand-ambassador

But, my fave perfume is peony and blush suede! Can anyone recommend an alternative? I like that it's light, lasts all day, feminine but not overpowering at all. I like that it's a day time scent. I like things that are a bit green or wildflowerish. Any one know of something like that? Thanks!

Tbh, Jo Malone fragrances are very linear and simple, which is fine- but cost (as do Chanel, Dior and all the big fancy ads and packaging users) about 5p a bottle to make. And are so linear that I could probably make them in my kitchen!
Additionally, H&M, Aldi, Primark and Superdrug all do a "lime basil mandarin" perfume which isn't cologne (ie mainly water)
My rip off comment was about the price not the actual colognes.

Totally missed the Becca memo, thanks

As previous posters have said Perfume Parlour do some fantastic dupes of Jo Malone and are very reasonable. You can but small bottles cheaply to check if you like the scents. I have had numerous perfumes from them and they smell very similar and last well.

While I get the upset of his about the ad, it seems he does not accept the fact he is totally irrelevant in China, not populr and using him in an ad just would not make sense, they replaced him with a known face.

Using dupes or fakes is tasteless, why not find another original brand isntead?

Using dupes or fakes is tasteless

Yarbles. Unless someone is looking at your dressing table or rooting through your handbag, who would know? It's far more tasteless to fritter good money away when there is no need simply because you are fixated on branding.

janetmendoza · 20/09/2020 02:29

Using dupes or fakes is tasteless -This is a joke yes? Pointing out that Jo Malone used a fake John Boyega?

Totally agree - he doesn't accept it. WHY THE HELL SHOULD HE???? He isn't popular in China because HE IS BLACK. Disney did the same to him with the star wars films BECAUSE HE IS BLACK.

I don't accept it and I don't think anyone else should either. It is disgusting how he has been treated

I don't know if they still make it but Marc Jacobs used to do a similar smelling fragrance.

WokesFromHome · 24/09/2020 09:47

I agree with ODFOx

From what I understand JB was in a story line that was based on his background and then the template was used in China, including a Chinese actor who was well known. JB has taken it very personally, no doubt as a racist act, when it actually isn't. They have used someone Chinese to promote a product to 1.3 Chinese people. Which, having worked in China myself and understand a bit about how their culture works, is totally understandable.

I'm sure Jo Malone is too busy trying to penetrate the Chinese market of 1.3 billion people to care about you not spending £20 on some bubble bath at Christmas.

mynewusernameisthis · 24/09/2020 10:20

I cannot understand anyone saying this isn't racist - even Jo Malone have admitted this and apologised. Personally, for me, I will not longer be buying from them. By posting on MN I hoped to make others aware / remind them of what they have done, and to tell anyone who will listen what we, as consumers, can do about it, so it's not just the case of them missing out on my £20.

Thanks for the Marc Jacobs suggestion @allwoofwoof1880 let me know if you remember which one :)

Thanks for other suggestions too, it's so hard to know without going to the shops to smell some! I have lots of perfume to use up, as JM is usually my mother's day treat, so it's nice to indulge in some research for a new perfume for next year :)

Edit - by Jo Malone I mean the company and the lady (who is no longer associated with them as of 2000s sometime, 2006?)

So if I get it right.......don't use a dupe ambassador, boycott the brand.....and use a cheaper dupe of the same scent....so basically can I have another version of what I like but can also prevent a social conscience, is kinda what it sounds like I'm afraid.

TheSeedsOfADream · 24/09/2020 10:33

Jo Malone the person sold the company and rather than learn her lesson (don't use your name if you're not aiming to stick around) she is now behind Jo Loves.

@BuggerBognor, were they older classics? They're the ones I've found PP don't do so well, because of the rarer and in some cases unique (Guerlain and Chanel) ingredients. They use natural oils rather than synthetics (like many perfume houses) so it might actually be that what you smell from PP is less synthetic than the real perfume but of course that doesn't help if it makes it not the same fragrance!

mynewusernameisthis · 24/09/2020 10:33

@SD1978 is that post for me? If so, no you haven't got that right Grin If you read my OP you'll see I never asked for dupes, or to save money, I asked for alternative perfume recommendations and described the kind of scents I like.

OP have you seen the 2 videos, the one with JohnB and the Chinese version?

JohnB gets on a white horse, JohnB goes to a party, gets out of a trailer looking dapper and people greet him. Meanwhile candles glow all around.

Chinese icon goes to party, Has a nice time, people are pleased to see him. He gets on a white horse. Loads of candles adding to warm glow.

I can't really see how John has created a personal story that needs some kind of patent that no one else is allowed to star in TBH. I can't see much of a story in the ad. It is really, really it what I expected.

mynewusernameisthis · 24/09/2020 13:35

except that JM went on about how it was his personal story and went on about the awards it won? yeah apart from that... Hmm

I still can't believe that myself and others are having to explain how this was racist. What a world
