Tretinoin users which sunscreen do you use?

I've been wearing my favourite nivia spf 50 face (the no shine one) for the whole year I love it, it's better than any mattifying primer I've ever used and gives my skin a cleaner appearance without makeup. I just received my first Dermatica cream (Tret, niacinamide and Clindamycin), it tells me I need a mineral sunscreen, please someone tell me I don't have to break up with my lovely nivea? I also have some watery essence at home but I never loved it.

I use the Eucerin SPF50 Photoaging Control Sun Fluid. It's broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. Goes on light and non-oily, can put make-up on over it without mishap. Originally got it for my son who, like you, is using tretinoin and clindamycin, (Treclin gel) and was previously using Differin. Now I use it too, (starting using a mild OTC retinol and lactic acid at night, also ageing skin). We also use a Korean one ('cos they know everything about skincare, right?) recommended by a YouTuber dermatologist - Purito Centella Green Level Safe Sun SPF 50. Again, broad spectrum protection and goes on easily - no white residue.

I don't know how these compare to Nivea though, having never used that one.

Are you using tret for acne? My son is using it to clear (what we both devoutly hope is) the last of his mild but persistent acne - just the odd spot on his cheeks now, but they don't half hang around. And he has hyperpigmentation as a consequence of several years of acne. The Treclin is supposed to clear acne, and then help fade the hyperpigmentation. But sunscreen is a must, every day, summer and winter, to protect the skin and fade the hyperpigmentation.

I'm using dermatica but have an adapalene prescription. I used Biore watery essence spf 50. It's fab and so light. Sinks right into the skin. I think most skincare enthusiasts say that Korean/Japanese sunscreens are the best

Anotheruser02 · 15/09/2020 20:45

I think they prescribed the tret for ageing, I'm 40 and have fine lines and massive pores so I said my primary problem was ageing and threw in details about oily skin and congestion. My acne isn't cystic and doesn't scar, but my skin is never completely free from congestion. When I took my selfies for Dermatica there was quite some redness and marks, I was due my period so it was at it's worst thats probably why the prescribed anti biotic in there.
I've had good results with 15% niacinamide this year from Revalution London, but I've been meaning to start a retanoid for ageing as they say start before there is real obvious signs, and I thought with having the option to wear a mask out and a potential further lockdown this was the perfect time if there ever was one to have peely purgy skin.

I use the Dr Dennis Gross SPF50 and really like it. It doesn’t aggravate my skin like other sunscreens do and I find make up sits nicely on it.

Thank you! I used the watery essence this morning. Quick question if anyone knows, I used the cream for the first time last night, so far no dryness or sensitivity.... would it be ok to use again tonight? Or is the every other night thing even if you didn't react? I'm a bit confused. Thanks.

The effect is cumulative, OP - the active ingredients bind to the relevant receptors in the cells and 'switch on' the processes that generate collagen and speed up keratin turnover (the stuff that clogs up your pores and sticks to the sebum, providing a nice nest for the acne bacterium to colonise). Most of the studies look at effects achieved after 6 months (at which point most of the improvements that are likely to take place are seen) and then a stabilising regime thereafter. So there's no big surge after day 1! If only!

I would stick to the slow build up - go to every day after a couple of weeks if you're fine with it, be prepared to step it down if you are very peely/spotty. The changes are supposed to take place in your dermis, below the epidermis, so will take a bit of time to work their way into the light, as it were.

My favourites are Biore Watery Essence and the La Roche Posay one in the little rectangular bottle.

I was prescribed Tretinoin by my dermatologist, for skin brightening/evening out and to reduce my rosacea related lumps and bumps. I haven't been to fill the prescription yet, as I'm a bit nervous what will happen to my skin! Have been reading about purging, flaking, peeling... Shock

Is the best approach to cleanse, and then apply the Tretinoin? Do I moisturise afterwards, or leave it and moisturise the next morning instead? Any tips would be highly appreciated!

EltaMD this one.
It's oil-free. I love it. The only thing is the tint is a tiny bit pale for me. Tiny bit. But texture, feel, protection, I love it. At the moment it's my fav sunscreen.

NaturalStudy · 16/09/2020 14:38

Can anyone recommend one which is cruelty free? Biore and La Roche are always highly recommended but are not cruelty free, which I try to go for when I can.

I also like the Heliocare gel one. But the EltaMD one wins for texture and comfort. The Heliocare I find is a bit stickier. Another excellent sunscreen though. Here

DameCelia · 16/09/2020 20:25

Biore Watery Essence is a chemical rather than a physical sunscreen.
You need a broad spectrum screen if you're using tret.
Heliocare is very good, also Medik8 for indoors only as not particularly high spf

motherofgod2 · 17/09/2020 09:23

I use Eclat. It's a mineral sunscreen and just feels like normal moisturiser I love it, non sticky no white cast. It's £8 from Amazon.

Anotheruser02 · 20/09/2020 15:18

Thanks for the recommendations, I bought the Eclat in the end, I'm on my second day with it now I love the orangey smell and although it takes a while to sink in it doesn't look shiny for too long. I haven't tried it under make up yet.

Heliocare, fabulous!

motherofgod2 · 23/09/2020 18:26

Pleased you like it! I put make up on straight after it and it's fine.
