Face masks that don’t rub make up off!

Has anyone managed to find a style of mask that doesn’t rub right off your nose and lips and smudge your make up off?!

I haven’t noticed this happening. I use reusable cotton ones.

Craddle64 · 13/09/2020 08:02

Do you set your make up with powder and spray and prime it with a base? Make up hasn't rubbed off, a couple of times happened with lipstick that wasnt set.

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 13/09/2020 08:17

Why would you wear make-up under a mask?

I get that one might be on the way to work or an evening out - is it really not possible to just add lipstick when you arrive? (Even if the loos are closed?)

BubbleBoy12 · 13/09/2020 08:59

@PersephonePromotesEquanimity I wear makeup on a daily basis, I like to wear it and it makes me feel nice. I wouldn't stop wearing makeup because I have to wear a mask, I think OP has asked a good question.

I wear it to work, I use public transport to get there so I need a mask. I work alone in an office so I take it off in doors, I'm going to continue wearing makeup :)

Life has already changed so much, I'll keep my makeup on haha

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 13/09/2020 09:10

I was not suggesting that people stop using make-up at all.

I asked whether it was necessary to wear it under a mask.

natnev · 13/09/2020 09:13

I've found a great device that goes under your mask, made of plastic, that raises the cloth mask off your skin a little. The mask still stays close to your face on the important bits, so it doesn't affect the masks ability to protect you or others, but it lifts the cloth away from your mouth and nose a tiny bit so you don't end up sucking it in when you breathe 🤣 I don't know the name of it so you might have to google a little. It's great for not rubbing foundation off though.

badfurday · 13/09/2020 10:10

I'm having this problem too. About to start a new job in a hospital which needs a mask on and off throughout the day. 😩

WeeM · 13/09/2020 18:12

If all I was doing that day was going to supermarket for example then I wouldn’t put make up on under. However most of the time it’s because I’m going to work/out for something to eat say and the mask needs to come on and off to get there/go to loo/order etc. Unfortunately I’m not blessed with nice skin so have always worn foundation and lipstick.
I’m away to google that @natnev !

I just wear lip stains and tints with a bit of lip balm over and then apply my mask. I find it sticks on until I brush it off with a toothbrush.

Theseptemberissues · 13/09/2020 18:41

I’ve been setting my base with urban decay setting spray and applying lipstick when I get to work instead. Not completely fool proof but close enough!

Miseryisabutterfly · 13/09/2020 18:59

@WeeM I’m not blessed with good skin either, so feel you there! I have found the cotton concertina style masks best though. I set my makeup with a translucent powder and as mentioned up thread, the only issues I’ve had are with lipstick/balm. Maybe it’ll get better for you as the weather cools down?

WeeM · 14/09/2020 10:17

@Miseryisabutterfly I’d love to think it was the weather but I’m in Scotland so it’s not been warm here for some time Grin . I haven’t tried the concertina ones though actually so maybe I’ll get one in that style to try.

WeeM · 14/09/2020 10:18

I do actually have a setting spray somewhere which I never use so will need to dig that out!

Search “face mask bracket” on amazon. I think that’s what natnev means. I haven’t tried them yet, but tempted to order one. Some of them are a little bit Hannibal Lector...

I have been finding that a pure silk mask is much less disruptive to makeup/sunscreen/skincare products. It sort of glides over your skin and doesn't absorb things.

I've got a few silk masks and they seem to cause much less of a problem with this.

ElspethFlashman · 15/09/2020 15:34

I'm a nurse who still likes to wear a bit of base. Mainly because I have to wear mascara and under eye concealer because of my piggy exhausted eyes and if I had only that on, I would look a bit weird! And we actually can take it off if we're social distancing sufficiently with colleagues.

The only thing that works is Urban Decay setting spray. Regardless of whether its foundation or just a bit of concealer on the nose.

Otherwise it will rub off no matter what mask you use.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 15/09/2020 15:37

Try a silk mask. I got one from Etsy but hd to wait a bit as it was from China. If you can affairs buy one from the UK but it’ll be ££. Satin ones can work too but some say they’re less breathable, I didn’t notice a difference but I don’t wear one for very long.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 15/09/2020 15:39

Actually Beemills found an affordable silk mask on Amazon - I must have missed it when I was looking! Will get one if the two I have are bot enough.

ladybee28 · 15/09/2020 16:11

But WHYYYYY??? The OP wears make up....they then wear a mask. Gosh I could actually slap you....EYE ROLL CENTRAL.

Wow. Don't often see this kind of pre-teen attitude on S&B.

How odd.

@WeeM as PPs have said, a setting spray's probably your best option –or if your foundation's OK, maybe just changing the form of lippy you're using to a stain rather than a normal lipstick?

WeeM · 15/09/2020 19:54

@ladybee28 I see that comment’s been deleted Grin - I really didn’t think it was that odd a question either. I’m going out in town....I need to wear a mask in a taxi then a 40 min train journey then into the restaurant...I’m obviously going to have my make up done before I do all of this. I’m going to give the setting spray a go and see how it goes.

ladybee28 · 16/09/2020 09:15

@WeeM it's tricky too when you're travelling on trains / switching transport etc. like that – I often find I get a bit of a sweaty face and then THAT makes everything move/ rub off on a mask even quicker than normal.
