Spearmint tea for hormonal acne?

I’ve read that spearmint tea can help improve hormonal acne. Anti-androgen effect I believe. I’ve started to have 2-3 cups per day, only started two days ago though. I wondered has anyone else tried this and if so, was it effective?

That’s interesting @anicebag I think I might be peri as I’m getting longer gaps between periods. If I’m honest I’m hoping menopause might settle the acne. I see very few older ladies with acne, so I’m hoping!
@LadyH846 can I ask which DIM you take? I googled and there seem to be lots!
The brand I take is called Nutri advanced. But I've used other brands too and they all worked well. I take around 100mg maybe a few/couple times per week. Initially I took it everyday. I find some brands can contain too much (e.g. 250mg +) and then I get side effects.

@anicebag. God me too, I have a years supply as back up! I wouldn't be able to get through a day without DIM - it's miracle stuff. Started taking it for my acne and within 3 weeks, acne gone but also hot flushes, confusion, brain fog, tiredness, joint pain, all gone.

That’s the brand I have too LadyH846

It could also be worth looking at soy. It's in everything and can have an impact on hormones.

AmethystMoonShine · 12/09/2020 10:41

@LadyH846 thank you and to others. Think I’ll give it a go.

No, no soy. We're trying to reduce oestrogen dominance with DIM - soy will counteract that.

AmethystMoonShine · 13/09/2020 08:57

Now I’m confused. I’ve ordered the Nutri Advanced DIM and soy is one of the ingredients Confused

I wouldn't worry - there is only going to be a tiny amount of soy in it given that they are small capsules. Also the DIM will help to counter anything estrogenic like soy. Remember that lots of things are estrogenic, including flax, most seeds, some grains, alcohol. I don't think it's possible or desirable to cut out everything estrogenic.
AmethystMoonShine · 13/09/2020 09:56

Still confused! I thought it was the Androgens causing the problem not estrogen!??

I think DIM blocks the effect of testosterone, and therefore androgen receptors.

It can also support your liver in processing excess oestrogen, I believe.

I'm confused as well; my skin seems to love oestrogen! However, there is evidenvce DIM works in balancing hormones overall. Not sure if that's mainly anecdotal or medical.

Thank you to the pp who mentioned Spironolactone. I'd never heard of it.
I've read a bit about this and it sounds amazing. It blocks Androgens (testosterone) which are causing the acne. Side effects include thicker hair, a slight increase in breast size and a reduction in body/facial hair.
..sound like great side effects to me Grin

It is not safe if you're pregnant or planning to be however.

I've no idea how easy it is to get Spironolactone prescribed but it sounds a safer option (at my age) to the combined pill which I'm taking to control my hormonal acne.

Ah ok thanks for explaining. I feel less alone too Smile
