Dry and blotchy foundation

Since I started using makeup my finished look never looks amazing! It never looks smooth like it should do. My skin doesn't really feel very dry but when I do my makeup it looks rubbish, dry, blotchy and flaky! I recently started to use a very good night moisturiser which makes my skin feel amazing before bed but my makeup still looks crappy.

I usually use
Primer, foundation, concealer, bit of powder, bronzer, blush, and highlight on my skin but it never looks like other people's, I've even tried buying the same products as people use on YouTube videos (obviously not the really expensive ones) and it still just looks the same so I don't think it's the makeup I buy ? It must just be my skin but I don't know.

Anyone have any tips ?

Focus on skincare and you’ll find how your make up sits will improve. Your skin is the base so making sure that it’s been looked after will reflect when wearing make up too.

If your skin is flaky and blotchy it maybe that you need to exfoliate. You can do this with a chemical exfoliation with aha/bha acids or with a physical scrub. Something like the pixi glow tonic exfoliates the skin, of you choose a physical scrub do be careful as some can damage the skin. If you choose the acid route you may need to add spf to your routine .

Have you tried applying your foundation without the primer? Sometimes I don’t always love a primer it really depends on the one I use.

What does your skincare routine look like?

As above, focus on your skincare. Robert Welsh is worth a watch, he’s all about less is more and ensuring your skin is make up ready.

Tbh I don't have much of a routine I use ' oils of life sleeping cream' before I go to bed and then during the day after I have had a shower i just use olay moisturiser.

I have the 'oils of life intensely revitalising cleaning gel' I did use that daily too but it caused me to get quite a lot of spots

I would look at definitely introducing some basic skincare. You can moisturise your skin but if you’re not ridding old skin then it won’t necessarily get into the skin layers as much as it could if the skin was exfoliated.

If it causes you to get spots it could be party because you don’t have a skincare routine at the moment and it’s purging your skin, or it doesn’t agree with you.

A concept you may like is a brand called Beautypie. I’ve had some great products from them and they cover everything from make up to skincare and hair care.

You basically sign up and pay a monthly membership of £5, £10 or £20 it’s for a min. If 3months. And this gives you an allowance to spend on the website to then purchase skincare that is made in labs that produce other skincare for other brands at a much cheaper price. If you have a look on YouTube at reviews you can get a sense of what it’s about. Caroline Hirons will be a good blog/ channel to have a look at as she covers everything skincare.

For daily basic:-

Cleanser
Toner ( could be a gentle aha based toner for exfoliation)
Moisturiser

When using anything acid based you do have to see how your skin reacts some can tolerate a daily use some will use it a couple time’s a week. A physical scrub doesn’t need to be used every day either, I would avoid cleanser with exfoliating grains in.

I would get into a basic habit of a simple routine with an exfoliation once or twice per week and see how you get on. Definitely check out Caroline Hirons and I also like Robert Walsh for skin and beauty on YouTube too.

If you decide to try beautypie you can use BPDrops as a code to get a free serum.

That's great thank you! So cleanser toner and moisturiser are steps I would do everyday right ? And then the exfoliate just a couple of times a week. Do they all have to be the same brand? I guess it would be best to use the same branded stuff.

Don’t all need to be the same brand, find the best that works for you. I like the ordinary, Nip & Fab but my everyday moisturiser is Aldi.
Once you get basics sorted then you could look at introducing an add on, I use Vit C 3 times a week and AHA maybes 2 a week as that’s what works best for my skin. Back of packs it says am & pm but that would destroy my skin. Oh and don’t forget your sunscreen!
Trining Woodwall does some good videos on social media about skincare etc.

If your foundation is going dry and blotchy it could be that your skin is dehydrated, possibly sucking any extra moisture it can from your foundation which is what’s making it patchy. I agree with PP and look at some exfoliation and a more hydrating moisturiser.

Aldi do a dupe of the pixi glow tonic - it's milder, so might be a better starting point for exfoliation. The Aldi face creams are also fab, if you didn't want to start with high end stuff.
