Super curly toddler hair - products?

Turning to all you lovely style and beauty experts for some advice.

My son is 19months - he has type 3B hair I'd say... His dad has tight afro-carribean curls and I have very thick wavy caucasian hair.

It keeps getting really tatty in small sections at the back and he cries when I try to tease them out. I'm using a small amount of cantu leave in conditioner after washing it which we only do about every 5 days as he just hates it. I'm not sure what to comb his hair with?

I'll attach a pic - let me know what you think would help!

My daughter has very similar hair. I wash it every two days, and find if we skip a wash and leave it, say, four days, it is much more knotty to the point where I’ve had to cut knots out in the past. We just use normal kid shampoo with conditioner, brush with a tangle teaser when soapy and make sure there are no knots left, rinse out and then I run her hair through with my fingers to separate the curls. I don’t use towels of any description to dry it. We only have tears if we get shampoo in her eyes. I also read a tip years ago about trimming hair regularly, as the split ends tangle really easily. I trim maybe 1-2 cm off every 4-6 months (her hair is so curly, it doesn’t feel like you lose any length) and I think it helps. I might start looking at products to help define the curls more at some point, but I don’t think she needs it just yet. Good luck with finding a method that works for you and your boy, and makes hair washes less stressful. His hair is beautiful!

Don't wash it daily, it dries out curls. Once a week is enough for curls with a touch up in a morning.

My daughter has very long curly hair now and I found because I started her young with brushing, she's okay now at nearly 5.

I highly recommend Curly Ellie or my little coco. Though Curly Ellie serum is better than my little coco curling cream. Both designed for children with curls and are super gentle, it's not like using anything with chemicals like L'oriel and other big brands.

Use a wet brush and a wide comb, both cheap on amazon.

So once a week I shampoo and conditioner with my little coco shampoo & conditioner. Brush through with a wet comb after bath and put in Curly Ellie leave in conditioner.

On a morning, I spray wet, brush with a wet brush and then the wide comb. Add Curly Ellie serum and scrunch. You can add in detangling spray if he gets upset after you've wet it.

Leave it to dry and beautiful curls!

If the hair is really knotting, it's probably because a) you aren't touching up each day with a spray & brush either with fingers or a wide comb or b) you're not using sulphate free shampoo. Curls are very sensitive to any extras on them and definietly don't respond well to normal brand shampoo's.

It's not too knotty only a bit at the back which I can tease out. I've ordered some of the my little coco range. Thanks everyone

@UserX some hair just gets tangled though. Mine is only below chin length so I couldn't go shorter and I still have to use handfuls of conditioner and spend time on it because it's so curly and fine so it tangles a lot
