I like these boots but not sure if they're actually fugly?!?

Bought these today from TKMaxx. Currently wearing them around the house to check comfort and make sure I really like them. I like that they have a heel but are still sturdy, have good grip for winter, and they are soft and comfy to wear. I'm pretty sure past me would have said they were fugly though current me quite likes the look of them. Reassure me (or bring me to my senses before I remove the tags) Grin

I'm excited to wear them on the school run tomorrow morning! Boring life that I lead Grin
I may wear them with a vintage dress I've not worn yet, for a full on 90s vibe. #relivingmyteenswithouttheembarassment GrinGrin

I like them! So retro!

WiserOlder · 09/09/2020 22:46

I lived through the 90s and they don't seem very nineties to me!

The boots that are coming in this winter are very clumpy alright but flatter. Less of an obvious heel, just the entire sole is thick. I quite like them.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 09/09/2020 22:58

I also lived through the nineties - my teen years. They do seem nineties to me, though nineties me would not have worn them. Nineties me wore DMs.

They're not very 90s. 90s boots did indeed have a high block heel, with a platform on the sole, but it was a thinner and more streamlined block heel than the current block heels, and they were not combined with the hiker boot look. If anything 90s boots were more like 60s boots (but not as high on the platform, obvs).

Hiker-effect boots (ie chunky with grip soles) were popular for a while but they were flat not platform or heeled. Platform block heels were usually smoother looking. They were also very heavy!!

I remember clearly the time the new shape "thin heel boots" fashion came in around 1998 to replace the platform block heel boots. These were not a stiletto pointy heel like today's thin high heels; they were wide but thin. A bit like the shape of a ruler.

Also remember wedge dolly shoes and wedge court shoes coming in around 1999. They didn't look great.

I remember my friends wearing boots like those pictured below in the 90s. 90s fashions were pretty diverse - I also remember boots like you describe, but my friends who wore boots like these were the types to wear spliffy bomber jackets and bunk off school to meet their boyfriends in short skirts and listen to Whitney Houston. I was more grunge.

Beware but are they actually vintage 90s though or just described as such? I'd be quite surprised if they were actually made in the 90s.

JollyAndBright · 10/09/2020 08:47

I love them.

TantricTwist · 10/09/2020 08:50

They're fine definitely not fugly. I have a similar pair but without the heel.

DidoAtTheLido · 10/09/2020 08:50

Personally I don’t like rugged boots with a heel added.

Proper Timberlands were fashionable, ones with heels just naff.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/09/2020 09:02

lantern well I certainly remember friends wearing such boots, and as I said I also remember a friend getting jelly shoes with pretty much exactly the same heel in the mid 90s. Perhaps they weren't 'fashionable' but they existed Grin

I really like them. My friend bought some Doc Martens Kendras which have a heel and they somehow just didn't look quite right. I like yours much better and would definitely wear them myself.

They're not really what I remember from the 90s though. I remember lots of Timberlands or similar but not with a heel, and lots of block/chunky heels often with a platform but they were usually plain black leather not lace up/hiker style. I hung out with a grunge crowd and most of us wore docs but a few of the gothier ones had massive chunky biker type boots with loads of buckles and a sole several inches thick. I saw someone from that crowd just before lockdown in the pub and she was still wearing the same boots that I remember her buying in the 90s, now that's value for money!

LanternLights · 10/09/2020 14:35

Beware Jelly shoes with a chunky heel and grip sole were around in the 90s yes, but still I'd have to very respectfully disagree with you on these high block heel hiker boots front being around in the 90s! Grin Hiker/Timberland/Caterpiller/Doc/Biker boots - a definite yes (I had Docs, biker and Caterpillar boots). Chunky but flat though. A true 90s look would be a floral button-through sweetheart neckline dress with any of these.

Regardless of the 90s debate, your new boots look very nice. Report back and let us know if they're comfy for distance/school run fast walking!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/09/2020 14:50

I'm not very used to walking in heels but I was able to get a good pace going! I wasn't particular wanting a 90s look anyhow - it hadn't even crossed my mind until this thread 😂

Beware To be honest I love any chance to reminisce about fashions from when I was young and carefree! Not any more (sigh) Grin Glad the boots have worked out!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/09/2020 15:08

Me too! Think I enjoy reminiscing more than I did actually living it - youth is wasted on the young 🤦‍♀️

Bobbin4apples · 10/09/2020 15:31

I love them! Definitely my style. I have 2 pairs that are quite similar but in black, think i'll have to look for a brown pair now.

Oh and i've never considered the height issue when wearing heels. I'm 5'9" and if I like a heel then so be it.

Shimy · 10/09/2020 15:38

Love them OP and might get a pair myself.

JMAngel1 · 10/09/2020 16:43

I love them - really on trend.

AJTracey · 10/09/2020 19:40

Nice but wit blue jeans

Mixingitall · 10/09/2020 19:41

Love them!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/09/2020 19:53

Yes - I wore blue jeans today (and sparkly socks!) - much better colour combo.

They’re fugly in a good way

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 11/09/2020 09:37

I love them! 90s me would have loved them too Wink

AuldReekieCreakymemory · 11/09/2020 10:42

I like them so much I'd buy them!
