Sitting outdoors in winter

ScribblingMilly · 06/09/2020 14:55

Because of COVID pretty much my whole social life is taking place outdoors. And thinking ahead to late autumn and winter I'm probably still going to want to sit in gardens & outside cafes. What are the best clothes to put together? I'm thinking of gloves that I can still eat with, layers, something waterproof that doesn't look like I'm going to climb Everest. I'm not a very sporty person so these aren't my normal clothes. Not quite sure where to start. Any suggestions please?

Lots of thinner layers rather than bulky jumpers/coats. Take scarves, hats, etc, things that are easy to remove if you get too warm but all add extra coziness. Do not skimp on socks, wear thick, warm socks.

Long down coats are very fashionable and really toasty, you can spray with a proofing spray if they're not already waterproof

Add some merino or cashmere wristwarmers and heatech thermal tops/fleece lined opaque tights and you'll be grand!

ScribblingMilly · 06/09/2020 16:15

Thank you both. Yes, layers & socks, good. I've got some Uniqlo merino sweaters but have never known what to make of their down coats. This is obviously the year to try them. Fleece-lined tights and cashmere wrist warmers I never knew existed! Whole new world.

On the down coat, do they look better if you size up? I am nearly 6ft tall & don't want to look tube-like.

Turtledoves do cashmere wrist warmers made from recycled cashmere.

I am thinking ill be expected to be out more too. Layers. Layers are the thing.

ScribblingMilly · 06/09/2020 16:36

I've just looked at the Turtledoves ones & they're really pretty. They'll be great for me as I'm tall so my wrists are often sticking out.

Yes id say the most modern way to wear down coats is slightly over sized.

Oh forgot to mention sheepskin insoles for your shoes or boots. A few quid from eBay and truly life changing

ScribblingMilly · 06/09/2020 17:53

These are great tips, thanks. I'm dreading the end of summer but I figure I've just got to become an outdoors person.

Uniqlo base layers are very good for wearing under a jumper to add a layer.

ScribblingMilly · 06/09/2020 21:35

Is a base layer just a T-shirt or something else?

They are tops with thermal qualities

I used to work in a freezing office and wore them under blouses, they are very toasty

MoltonSilver · 06/09/2020 23:22

Great thread. I've been thinking I need exactly the same.

MoltonSilver · 06/09/2020 23:24

Ugg boots are great for this. I wear them as slippers so won't be wearing them to cafes but will wear them in my own garden if I have people over.

nanbread · 06/09/2020 23:31

Uniqlo ultra warm heattech long sleeve top and leggings.

Wear them under everything.

BackforGood · 06/09/2020 23:38

If you want to stay warm, ignore the fashion for having gaps between clothing.
So, as has been said above, wear socks rather than having that gap between the bottom of your trousers and your shoes. Wear tops that are long enough to either tuck into your trousers or stay covering the top of your trousers even if you stretch up or bend over. Wear a scarf or buff. You lose most of your heat through your head, so get yourself a warm hat you like.

ScribblingMilly · 07/09/2020 00:15

Thanks so much everyone. Uniqlo seem like they have this whole thing covered. Plus Uggs as outdoor slippers - good idea. A buff is another thing I've had to Google but looks great. I reckon I'll have the windows at home open a lot this winter so I'll be wearing more layers even indoors.
