My husband just cut my hair...

I asked him to. I rarely go to salon. I probably have my hair cut once or twice a year. I HATE layers and like it cut blunt in a long bob. Then it grows, I get pissed off with it and it gets awful split ends. And I go to salon and chop it in a long bob.

Anyway, he’s cut it and i don’t mind the length but it’s not straight. The under layer is longer than the top layer. My own fault! You know, not much on tv... I thought how hard can it be?!

My dilemma is what can I do to my hair long term? I’m late 30s, a mum of three young kids including twins. I do not have time for hair.

The bits that came off shocked me. I realised what a grim colour my hair is. It’s brown but not a lovely chocolate colour but almost like the colour of a rat 😂 hideous. No grey yet. Small blessing.

Due to a combo of hormones and persistent anemia I am deffo thinning at the front. Making my face appear even longer. I have a side parting. I lack all skills when it comes to hair. I can barely do a plait in my daughters hair.

Any suggestions?

I’m not up for a super short hair cut or too much effort with monthly upkeep etc.

Oh current styling... I use head and shoulders, a bit of conditioner, tie it up most of the time. Let it dry naturally... never hair dryer.

Id go to the hairdressers. Ask for advice and have it cut.
With the anemia can you have an iron infusion ?

Lockdowner13 · 05/09/2020 22:58

Re anemia... I don’t think it’s that bad I need an infusion. They always comment on the size of my red blood cells too... macrocytic anemia it’s called. Always picked up in blood tests, I cannot donate blood (always too low), it was measured a lot during my twin pregnancy and it was always commented on. I get very heavy periods, doesn’t help.

Get yourself to the hairdresser, get a proper haircut and be honest about your routine. Find a hairdresser who will be empathetic to your lack of interest and give you a good classic cut that will wear well between cuts.
Never leave the salon without booking the next appointment. It's a useful discipline. There's never a right time for a haircut, much like having children.SmileGrin
If you dislike your colour, change it. Again, discuss low maintenance options. Some chestnut lowlights or similar might add warmth without necessitating monthly visits.
Re your daughter, don't be so wet and stop finding virtue in barely being able to do a plait. YouTube is your friend and if you look on Amazon you can buy heads to practise on if your daughter is not a willing victim. There are few children who will not enjoy the luxury of having their hair brushed at least. Ask her to return the favour, with a bit of practise it's rather nice.
If my husband can learn to turn a decent ponytail and submit to some comedy hairstyling by his daughters, you can stop being a martyr and find some space to get a haircut you like.
Sorry, bit harsh perhaps but time to teach your children that the world doesn't revolve around them entirely.
Re the anaemia - that's not hard to solve without an underlying health condition is it?

Unless you really hate it, I'd suggest leaving the colour as it is. You don't have time for dealing with roots. You definitely need a proper, reasonably regular haircut.

From experience, low iron is difficult to get under control when you have very heavy periods . As well as iron tablets, a silica supplimemt really helped me with the hair loss.

Tenner · 06/09/2020 07:35

do you take iron? My GP always tells me that low iron causes heavy periods and in turn deplete your iron further. catch22.

sorting my iron has strangely not only stopped my hair thinning but also made my periods loads lighter.

as for hair - I am cutting a friend's hair regularly in a blunt bob - I am rubbish with scissors but I am using clippers instead. It is very easy and very straight. Is this something worth trying? But for now, I would go to the hairdresser to get it all corrected.

Try Spatone for the iron. It's liquid sachets that you pour into a glass of fresh orange juice. Less harsh than iron tablets but still does the job. They're cheap on Amazon.

Tying your hair up will cause split ends so I'd suggest switching to a softer hair elastic when possible. I use a scrunchie at home or leave my hair down as much as I can. My hair has improved loads since I started doing that.

You will find it almost impossible to get your iron levels up whilst having regular heavy periods. I was prescribed tranexamic acid to take - which reduces the amount of blood flow - along side a heavy dose of iron tablets. You will need to get the iron tablets from the Pharmacist as the regular ones will do nothing to your levels.
Once your iron levels are up you will likely feel a lot more positive about everything - including your hair!

I was in a similar case of low iron - and actually thought I had the starting of dementia. I couldn't remember how to write my own name at times.

agree, spatone and the likes do nothing for serious iron deficiency. I took 3x day ferrous sulphate and levels came up slowly after 4 months.
