Can anyone help who has bought things recently? I've got a bit of a shopping list of clothes I'm 'missing' and need to buy.

I'm looking for plain black sports leggings which can be worn in the rain but don't look shiny. High Rise preferred. No obvious logos. I've done running leggings from m&s but I'm forever pullung them up as they don't come up high enough. As well as sport, I'll wear them for walking.

Sports tops that are cotton and not long. I have plenty of long, Polyester sports tops for wearing over leggings. I do a sport where I need pockets so wear a skort, shorts or joggers and long runnung/gym tops look silly. I'd love some retro style sports t-shirts but don't know where to look.

Sweatshirts without hoods but with the stretchiness, baginess, length of a hoodie - to wear with leggings. Am I going to have to look at the men's section? Everything seems cropped.

Im a size 14 bottom, 12/14 top. Wide hips, smaller high waist.

They are a bit on the expensive side but Sweaty Betty really are the best. I've recently treated myself to two pairs of power leggings and I have never worn any that are so beautiful and comfortable They also have the required pocket. I have a long sweatshirt from Next that does not have a hood but a neck in hoodie style, and I have another on order from Sweaty Betty as I got a discount code for filling in a questionnaire.

Primark!!!

Honestly I have loads of leggings from there and they actually wash really well!

ASOS 4505 black leggings are fantastic. Not see through, good hold, wash pretty well, high waisted, don't roll down.

minnie465 · 04/09/2020 14:27

Ordered some from fabletics. Def recommend them. Two pairs for £25 using introductory offer. Then I just rang up and cancelled the subscription.

ThatDirection · 04/09/2020 14:35

Thanks everyone so far. My DDs have mentioned fabletics before. I don't think I can stretch to Sweaty Betty prices at the moment. Someone recommended some from Amazon on here a few months back that they said rivaled their Sweaty Betty ones, but I didn't keep a note of the brand.

The Asos ones look like they will fit the bill. Thank you.

Now just sweatshirts and tops needed.....

OP posts:
ThatDirection · 04/09/2020 14:45

Okay - the Asos ones don't fit the bill. The only black ones available have a meshy part at the back of the leg. I need them to look a bit more like regular leggings.

The Baukjen Marte longline sweatshirt fits your brief perfectly. I have one and love it

Jcee · 04/09/2020 20:23

Matalan for leggings...I really like the souluxe ones for running and exercise classes - they are high waisted and hold me in!

EmmaStone · 04/09/2020 21:57

I only buy Sweaty Betty leggings now, they fit brilliantly, and wash so well, I've not had to retire a pair yet (oldest are probs about 5-7 years old, no sign of age at all). But I buy in the sales, and never want plain black.

Might be worth looking at Decathlon? Or Gap activewear.

For sweatshirts, I've got loads for both exercise and normal wear. I tend to go up a size to get that baggy look. Mine are from Sweaty Betty (again), Gap, Levi's, Whistles, Selfish Mother...

emma6776 · 04/09/2020 22:43

Definitely sweaty Betty (I rate the Powers). Try and find a discount code - they normally give one for signing up online. I hummed and ha’d for ages but they are the best leggings ever. So comfy and make me look a size 10 when I’m a 14!

MaryLennoxsScowl · 04/09/2020 23:07

Watching to see if you get any recommendations for tops as those sound like what I want too.
I have tried loads of ASOS leggings and none passed the squat test so all went back. I’ve had the fabletics two for £24 leggings and they’re good and do pass the test but make very sure you cancel! Otherwise they cost between £50 and £75 per pair.
I just can’t afford Sweaty Betty so can’t comment - but if I could afford their leggings I could pay for a personal trainer and then I’d look thin all the time and not just when I had the leggings on!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 05/09/2020 08:06

H&M sports wear is really good

Tanaqui · 05/09/2020 08:10

I agree H and M is often v good for the price. Otherwise gap sometimes have nice sportswear in their zillion percent off sales- it's dear at full price.

flibbertigibbety · 05/09/2020 08:13

Definitely Decathlon. I get most of my running stuff from there and it's fab. If you want super bright colourful ones try Tikiboo or Sturdy by Design.

redpandaalert · 05/09/2020 08:16

Avoid fabletics. We cancelled too and then a few months later they started taking money out of our account. They have history for doing this.

AuntieStella · 05/09/2020 08:20

Decathlon is easily the best VFM, but they do have logos so probably not for OP. But they are really good - don't go see through, lots of pockets and have drawstrings.

I'd try TKMaxx for the tops you describe. Most sports shops don't do cotton (everything is in a wicking fabric) but I think there there is enough of a crossover between leisure and sports, and so more likely to find cotton. For length and lack of hood, I'd try cycling departments, but again they are much more likely to be hi-tech wicking fambrics, not cotton. Bamboo based fabrics are beginning to appear in sports brands though - any good?

Yoga suppliers are more likely to have cotton and bamboo, but I don't have any specific recommendations.

ThatDirection · 05/09/2020 11:30

Thanks. Baukjen is out of my price range. 2 teenage DDs use up a lot of clothes budget.

I'll check out decathlon.
I used to buy lots of spirts/outdoor clothing from Tk maxx but tend to need to try on many items to buy 1. With changing rooms closed In reluctant to take the gamble knowing how unlikely it is the garment will fit or suit me.

I've got some bits from H&m for me and Dd. I do taste their sports gear too. Sadly their t-shirts tend to be a bit straight and bunch up on top of my hips. I really want some cross over tops. I don't sweat massively playing tennis and would like something unshibey and not gym like, which I could also wear with trousers or shorts for a walk in the countryside.

My DD had a gorgeous Nike kids t-shirt in a stretchy navy cotton, v-neck with pale blue trim on the sleeves and neck. Also, from ebay, I bought her a vintage reebok pale blue and red thick cotton stretchy vest top. Those are the kinds of things I'm searching for but I can't take a chance on pre-owbed vintage as I'm woman-shaped and need a returns option.

Not cheap, but Nike do cropped retro t-shirts?

KindergardenCentre · 05/09/2020 12:42

Iuga yoga pants on amazon might fit the bill. And they have really useful phone pockets on the legs. Unfortunately I'm trying really hard not to buy from amazon any more so have to find something new and phone pockets seem to be anathema to leggings designers.

beautifulmonument · 05/09/2020 12:43

I love this Nike top. (Hoody alternative). I love the fabric it's so soft and stretchy and comfy. Long sleeves and big pocket.

I have a couple of plain Champion tee shirts.

SallyOMalley · 05/09/2020 12:52

Another fan of Sweaty Betty here. The Power Leggings are fantastic: comfy, high(ish) rise, squat proof, flattering even on me. They wash well and dry very quickly.

Just checked it, and this code still works for 20% off: SBRUTH20.

fellrunner85 · 05/09/2020 12:59

What sport are you wanting to do, OP? Surely that's the key issue here?
As what I'd recommend for running is not what I'd recommend for yoga, or spinning, or whatever.

Also, a pet peeve of mine, but it makes me sooooo frustrated when people recommend Primark, H&M etc, on these threads. This is not proper sports gear - it's shit, and does not stand up to any sort of proper exercise. If you want cheap stuff that's actually fit for purpose, you need Decathlon. Primark and other high street brands are ok for sitting around in a gym cafe or doing a Joe Wicks in your living room, but honestly don't cut it when you're working hard.

Rainydays200 · 05/09/2020 13:05

Have you tried Next. They have some reasonable sportswear. I have some dark blue leggings that are lasting pretty well (although def not as good as sweaty Betty but I totally understand they are £££ and not for everyone)

ThatDirection · 05/09/2020 13:10

Good point. It especially has to wash well, as will be was bed frequently. Although I did buy my DD a great sports bra from h&m and I got some lightweight 3/4 loose fit trousers with pockets that are good for tennis and walking in better weather.

The leggings and sweatshirt are not for extreme-workouts. Mostly for walking in, maybe some pilates. The tops are for tennis, cardio-tennis and/or walking.
