Are long, layered hairstyles unfashionable now?

I've been growing my hair for a while and I like the length (down to my bra band) but when I first started seeing my current hairdresser, the first hairdresser I've ever really liked, he encouraged me to get rid of my layers. It's now all one length but I can't do anything with it! When I wear it straight it just hangs there (DH said it looks like a pair of curtains - thanks, love!), but when I try to wear my natural curls it looks like a frizzy triangle. Even just a wave with my curling tong looks lank and heavy.

I have a lot of hair but each strand is very fine so it can look thin, especially when shorter and straight. There's no body to it but I've noticed on social media, Pinterest, hair care articles, etc, nobody seems to have any layers. Even on the salon's social media everyone they feature seems to have one length, then styled in sleek waves.

I know this is an odd point of reference but I've been rewatching Brooklyn 99 and in early episodes Gina has a lovely layered cut which looks very glamorous and volumised with a wave in it. In later episodes she has long hair, all one length, and it has the same witchy/curtainy look as mine now.

Will I look dated and naff if I ask for layers at my next appointment? I'm living in a messy bun at the moment and I'm sick of it.

@lookatallthosechickens

I love those but the third one especially is so gorgeous!

@MrsVeryTired oh my god I remember when everyone and their sister asked for a rachel or a monica, without realising how difficult it was to cut (so not really something most stylists had the skill for) and then how high-maintenance those haircuts actually were, involving all sorts of hot rollers, teasing, and curling tongs to get all those flippy bits EXACTLY right and so everyone just had really awful choppy, unblended layers. Stylists always seemed to cut them about 5 inches too short, as well.

I remember Jennifer Aniston saying how much she hated the haircut from the moment she got it, but it was so popular she couldn't change it for years.

GabsAlot · 30/08/2020 12:30

i like layered hair-at the end of the day isnt it up to you what yo want not what the hd wants

trixiebelden77 · 30/08/2020 12:31

I still have layers - my hair’s very thick and it’s so hot and heavy if I don’t get layers put in.

Not too worried by the PP who thinks it looks ‘naff’ 😂

GabsAlot · 30/08/2020 12:32

jen also hated her hair in a bob it was tooo drastic(i think shes a bit fussy)

ohtheholidays · 30/08/2020 12:32

Nope I don't agree with your hairdresser at all I have layers and I have naturally very wavy hair and having the layers in makes my hair look lovely and stops my hair from feeling so heavy(I have alot of hair and mine is very thick though)and I go to a really good salon.

My DD12 also has layers in her hair and she has very curly hair and like me she has alot of hair that's very thick as well.

I know what you mean about the pointed look though my hair was like that before my last cut because I hadn't had it cut for 6 months because of the lockdown and my hair grows ridiculous fast and my layers had grown out and without the layers it did not look good.

Floisme · 30/08/2020 12:33

I think it's fair enough for a hairdresser to tell you what's in / out of fashion - in fact I'd expect mine to do that. But dragging their feet when you ask for something isn't on.

DancingFlamingo · 30/08/2020 12:33

I used to have long hair just as you describe, fine hair but lots of it! And all one length felt like Alanis Morrisette on a good day and Ozzie Osborne on a bad day 😂
I had it cut with inverse layers, so the back was layered to give movement and put some shape in and graduated to the front so then at the front it was one length, ie no layers round my face so it didn’t feel like a dated 90s Rachel cut. The overall length was the same all the way round.

looperb · 30/08/2020 12:41

🤣

looperb · 30/08/2020 12:43

But layered hair doesn't have to look anything like Rachel's from friends. I don't think my hair would ever look like that.

Hatscats · 30/08/2020 12:46

It’s definitely dated now, but if your paying then the hairdresser should do what you ask!

Mines very long, all one length and naturally straight, I like a blunt cut, then I can add my own movement to it.

Livpool · 30/08/2020 12:55

My hair is wavy although I tend to wear it straight.

I have long layers in it and it is thick and (I think) looks silly one length

lookatallthosechickens · 30/08/2020 13:05

@hatscats it's 100% not dated. Literally the complete opposite. Look at the instagram links posted above. Look at Alexa Chung or almost any 'cool' celebrity* (as opposed to the uncool ones, like reality tv stars). You can like what you like but all fashion signs point to shaped layers as the up-and-coming style for the next few years. It just hasn't made it to the masses yet.

*I don't think that Alexa Chung is cool, personally, I just don't know what else to call that sort of celebrity. Basically I just mean the ones that set trends which then trickle down to everyone else, for better or for worse.

amusedbush · 30/08/2020 13:10

@lookatallthosechickens

Oh I actually love Alexa Chung. Sadly I'm more "chunk" than "Chung" so could never pull off her style BlushGrin

@lookatallthosechickens trend setters?

lookatallthosechickens · 30/08/2020 13:16

@amusedbush lol she does look amazing and she has great style but I’m a massive nerd, when I think of cool women I think, of, like, Mary Beard 😹

MrsVeryTired · 31/08/2020 15:21

When I mentioned Friends I didn't mean the specific "Rachel" cut as that wasn't especially long, but have been watching re-runs and R & M do have various hairstyles throughout, often long and layered and pretty swishy and fab looking most of the time.

Marsis · 31/08/2020 15:51

Really like some of the ‘shag’ type style in the first Instagram account. I also have lots of hair an lord farqhaad is a good analogy. No real curl but doesn’t hold styles well (and I’m rubbish at doing them) so not sure I could pull it off. Anybody with something similar is it low maintenance?

Sickoffamilydrama · 31/08/2020 20:54

I think you've helped me find my new hairstyle OP love that shag look and it's one I haven't done before ☺️ hopefully it will work on my curls!

I was going to go short but as my Dsis & I work together & people muddle us up having short hair like she does would add to the confusion 🤦‍♀️

MaryLennoxsScowl · 31/08/2020 20:58

Layered hair is definitely back - three young women in my (creative industries) office had it done between Christmas and lockdown. I had a choppy Kate Moss in the 90s layer put into mine just before lockdown and it’s grown out really well and still looks good now.

Sickoffamilydrama · 31/08/2020 21:08

I'm thinking of going for something like this
