Hairdressers - what is toner? Does it wash off/out?

I am not very familiar with hair dye, so apologies if I sound a bit dense, but I went in to have my hair cut and my few grey roots coloured yesterday with a new hairdresser and the hairdresser suggested running a toner over the rest of my hair. My auburn hair is now a very dark brown and has lost all of the red tones, it looks almost black, no warmth at all. I'm so upset! What has happened here? Is it reversible?

I've tried googling it and the first few answers weren't very helpful, I then became disheartened and stopped googling.

It will likely fade OP dont panic.. But I am wondering why she toned out the red if you prefer it warm.:(

This has happened to me before and I think it is a case of the hairdresser "upselling" services.

I expect also that it will wash out, but next time, don't let the hairdresser talk you into something you didn't go in for

Yes toners tend to wash out

Thanks for your reply Chachacha90 it may be a language barrier as I live abroad, but the manager (I think it was the manager) translated for me to the hairdresser. This salon had been recommended to me by others so thought I was in safe hands Sad. Not sure what to do about it, I am hoping like you say, it'll wash out/fade away.

Thanks swimster and dementedpixie this makes me feel better. I doubt I'll go back, but this particular salon is proud of how it caters to western hair colour, eg, the lighter shades, so thought it would be ok.
