Acrylic nails to stop nail biting?

Has anyone done this? If so, how long did you have them done until the habit was broken and were your nails buggered anyway once you stopped having them done? I'm fed up of looking at my horrible stumpy fingers but bite them without even realising I'm doing it half the time 😭

I did a couple of years ago. I didn't have extentions, just a gel manicure I couldn't bite. Within about 24 hours I stopped putting my hands by my mouth.

I kept having regular manicures, as discovered if I had the gel soaked off and left them plain, my nails are quite thin and break easily, so had them done every 2-3 weeks.

Then the weekend before lockdown I had them soaked off and left as I thought chances were we would have to shut down for a bit. By Easter I'd started biting them again.

When the kids are back at school, im going to restart and hopefully will have pretty hands by the end of September...

I have acrylics as I’ve always been a ‘picker’ of nails and my nails are extremely thin anyway.
They have worked, and my nails are still thin (my mums nails were the nail so I think it’s just how my nails are) I’ve had them on for 10 + years now

Oh and my nails weren't ruined when I had them taken off. But the woman I go to soaks them off, no drills or heavy filing, and I don't know the amount of damage done by extensions.

Hopefully someone who's had that done will be along in a bit to advise!

I had acrylics before lockdown, took them off during and my nails just keep breaking and I picked at them all the time. I think the acrylics were very damaging to the nails underneath. When the salon re opened I opted for just gel polish, im pleasantly surprised, my natural nails are growing really well and is long lasting.

I wouldn’t worry about them damaging your real nails too much. I’ve had mine on for about 10 years non stop and obviously had to take them off during lockdown. They were quite weak for a while but within a couple of months were in perfect condition again.

My nails do grow extremely fast though so could just be new nail growth

I used to chew my nails rather than bite them but obviously that led to them breaking. I have had gel enhancements for two years now and I don’t chew them anymore.

During lockdown, I soaked my gels off. My nails underneath were fine and they only broke as often as they used to before I started getting gels. Other than a couple of extensions, my nail technician was very pleased with my nails when I got them done for the first time in July.

Thanks everyone. This sounds encouraging! How often are extension people visiting the salon? Do you get them removed and new ones put on each time? (sorry - I'm really ignorant!)

I only get extensions when one is significantly shorter than the others. The gel stops them breaking (unless I do something stupid) so I don’t need them extended most of the time and it’s my natural length underneath. I get my nails redone every 4 weeks.

I used acrylics to break a decades old nail-biting habit. Kept it up for about a year, and it left my nails very weak. However, that may have been years of chewing as much as the acrylics.

Started having Shellac manicures - did chew a couple of times when the polish peeled off before the next appointment, but I had more or less broken the habit. Now I do my own with a UV lamp and Shellac dupes. I haven't 100% stopped biting, but I'm almost there. I can go weeks without chewing a nail and then, one evening, I find I've bitten two or three without thinking. This only happens if I don't have polish on them.
