Maternity/new baby coats

Hi all,
My first baby is due in November and I've been a bit in denial about buying maternity clothes so far. I've been working from home so have managed to get away with leggings and a few stretchy dresses.

I'm starting to worry now though about needing a coat for the autumn/winter, including for when the baby comes and I might want to wear a sling.

It feels a bit silly to splurge on a maternity coat so does anyone have any advice on what sort of thing I'll need? I'm a big fan of Cos coats and I was wondering if I could get away with something like this in a larger size:

www.cosstores.com/en_gbp/women/womenswear/coats-and-jackets/product.stand-collar-wool-coat-blue.0768689003.html

Would it be spacious enough for a bump/baby underneath? Or do I need to bite the bullet and get a special coat for this?

Thanks!

I just used an oversize belted wool coat (just from Zara) and belt that over the bump/sling. I didn’t even size up, it being oversized was enough, but I’m quite petite. You’d have to try that one and see how roomy it is. I think buttons or belted is better than zips for when baby is in a sling, I always worried about scratching him.

A friend of mine has one with a removable panel for pregnancy and Babywearing, from bonprix I think.

@Trufflepuffpuff Have you tried Seraphine? Most of my maternity clothes were from there and they're all lovely quality. I went on to resell them all as well, so recouped some of my money, so if you'd prefer you may find some used options as well. I had the cost below and I loved it so much. It was super comfy and stylish. The coat wrapped around my bump and then the baby while in a baby sling. I wore it well after baby was born and even without baby. There's lots of styles on their website though, so if you want something more casual, take a look at them all here: www.seraphine.com/en-gb/maternity-clothes/maternity-coats-jackets/

I would just get a couple of maternity jumpers to get you to the birth, and then not bother doing up your coat.

The baby might not like being worn so see how that goes before buying an expensive coat to accommodate it. Also you won't want to baby-wear when it's really cold because of the risk of slipping on ice.

I just wore my normal coat open with a big scarf. For a November baby you really won’t need a full on coat for very long. It’s not worth it.

Def don’t need a maternity coat - just wear a big scarf

And with baby in sling I did the same - put a scarf on the outside of the sling so it covered arms and feet and then just wore my normal coat. You & the baby get each other’s body heat so it’s fine, you just need to keep their legs arms and head warm which is easy.

I don’t think you’d get a sling under that coat. Agree with PP to just wear a normal one and leave it open. Babies are the hottest thing on earth. Twenty minutes with one strapped to you and you’ll be melting. I’m due number 2 in jan and am planning to wear normal coats open possibly with a borrowed cape if I’m feeling exotic! Zara do some cheap nice belted coats if you do want to wrap one round both of you.

I have a lovely boiled wool drapey coat, fastened at the top, knee length and lots of material that fitted round the bump then the sling. It was from Chesca so quite £££ but I still wear it now and DC1 is nearly 10! Definitely lighter weight as PPs have said, babies make you hot!

I bought a 3in1 coat from Mamalicious. I'm due in December and I knew I would need a 'sensible' coat for being pregnant and with a newborn. I'm not sure I would have spent money on one that would only be maternity. This one can be a non-maternity coat, maternity if you add the panel and then comes with a panel especially for baby wearing. So figuring it will just become a normal coat post baby I think it is worth buying.

Thanks all! So it sounds like I can get away without a maternity coat. The Seraphine ones are nice but again I'm not sure if it's worth the investment. I might try the jumper/scarf idea.
