Are there new season trends for A/W 2020? And what are they?

What with corona and everything and having been out of the country all summer I’m a bit out of the loop. Is there such a thing as fashion and trends for the new season? I know it’s shallow and I probably won’t be buying anything new, maybe one or two things, but I do like to see what I have in my wardrobe in terms of colour/styles/boot shape/trainers etc etc that are a nod to current trends. Any indications would be great. I might even buy myself to a magazine (it’s been a long time!).

The two trends I'm noticing a lot are big collars and dark florals.

Yes, I don't like super trendy pieces because they don't age well, but the trends I've noticed so far are:

Puffy voluminous sleeves & shoulders
Statement collars
Hair bows
Bandanas abs headscarf's
Puffy quilted pieces like coats, bags and even skirts
Waistcoats
Kimonos
Retro 70's inspired styles
Square toed shoes (I want this trend to die 😭 )
Oversized statement bags
Chain details & accessories
Oversized blazers
Shackets (think oversized check shirt that's actually a jacket)
Jogger inspired bottoms - denim, leather trousers, etc with elasticated cuffs
New takes on trench coats - gathered sleeves, extra belts, extra panels etc
Added frills on the seams of shirts, dresses, skirts
The colour purple
Wide legged jeans
Coloured leather
Capes

Velvet
Corduroy

I think the most important trend is the rise in sustainable fashion. There are so many new designer second hand shops popping up online as well as options to rent clothing items such as dresses or statement handbags you would only wear a handful of time's. So I think if you can find some classic pieces in your own wardrobe and update them with trendy accessories and a couple pieces from the tends list above then you're good to go.

Statement collars
Headbands
Bottle Green (again)
Boots with really chunky soles

Ah this is brilliant thanks, as someone who always loves a nod to the 70s I have plenty of stuff in my wardrobe that will fit. I’ve tried the puffy sleeves thing but it makes me feel I look too big for my frame. And yes it’s great that the fast fashion message is finally getting through.

I did buy a copy of Grazia today and I can also add wrap dresses to the list! Especially those with a bit of a DvF 70s vibe. I will be slinging on a few of those with some chunky boots as soon as I get out of isolation.

Agree with the sustainability angle, plus wine has given an excellent list. I think the big thing will be comfy, and a move away from tailoring because of more people working from home. Whether that translates to the shops I don’t know, depending on lead time, but I can’t imagine huge sales of dry clean only smart trousers, for example.
