Spots/acne after facial hair remover with twiddly thing/manual epilator

Thanks to recommendations on here I got on of these spring twiddly things, manual epilators I think they are.
Stings a little but works brilliantly for my facial fluff/hair
But now I’ve realised it brings me out in pimples/acne. I’m already prone to this but not usually in the top lip area so its definitely the hair removal.
It’s getting me down - feel like I have to choose between being hairy or spotty ☹️
It was so nice for a bit for my makeup to go on more smoothly in that area.

Has anyone found any ways of stopping breakouts after epilating/tweezing/threading? Any products to use?

Or will my skin get used to it if I persevere?

I have terrible spot prone skin and have been using one of these spring things for years. I only every found it was the really thick hairs that hurt and caused a blemish. I never really got spots unless I'd really over worked an area. Please perserve
your skin will settle down. Also try catching the very end of the hair, do the spring is not always on your face.

DiddlySquatty · 22/08/2020 23:03

Yes it’s not all over but even one or two extras is disheartening ☹️
But perhaps it hasn’t helped that it’s been so hot and then wearing a mask also.
Apart from the spot thing I really like it

I gave up on my twiddly thing for the same reason. Even one spot there is one too many for me.

DiddlySquatty · 23/08/2020 08:33

So @nicelyneurotic are you just leaving the fluff alone? Or did you find another solutIon that works.
I don’t want to have to choose between spots and hair! 😂

Facial hair removal does the same to me.

botemp · 23/08/2020 09:33

Make sure to sanitise that springy thing with alcohol before and after use and sometimes using BHA after epilation can help some people. You can also use alcohol on your skin to sanitise but I'm always a bit apprehensive about that personally, best left to the professionals. Tbh, laser made all these problems go away for me (I also suffered with ingrown hairs that tended to look like acne/spots on my upper lip as they struggled to break though, which to my eyes just looked like herpes...).

Frankiemintz · 23/08/2020 09:42

I get this too. Thinking of getting a lumea but not sure if it works on chin hairs.

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 23/08/2020 09:43

Lumea worked for me!

Branleuse · 23/08/2020 09:45

i cant use an epilator or wax anywhere as it causes spots when the hair regrows. You probably need to find a different method

RD15 · 23/08/2020 09:46

I’ve got one of these as I had the same problem:

www.boots.com/jml-finishing-touch-flawless-hair-remover-10245044

Works brilliantly and zero irritation. Also super quick!

DeathMetalMum · 23/08/2020 09:49

Are you certain it's not the mask wearing?

I've had breakouts in this area but also my chin. I worked out it was the mask causing the spots, when I was trying to cover my spot before work that my mask would be covering it anyway.

DiddlySquatty · 23/08/2020 15:02

I think the mask isn’t helping but I don’t have to wear one all that much really.
As you can see I have a lovely little line of 3 and I’m sure it’s the epilator thingy.
Just not sure whether to keep trying or give up on it. My skin is not great at the moment anyway but I don’t normally have a problem in that area.

I would be happy to pay for laser or electrolysis if it was a permanent solution or at least long term, but I’ve heard of people getting spots after laser too?

Stuff that pulls at the hair gives me this kind of issue. I find the Japanese facial razors are the best thing for getting rid of peach fuzz, they don’t pull at all. I use one of those on clean skin, then I exfoliate with an acid afterwards (I use lactic 10%). Make sure you clean the razor between uses and are always using a nice sharp one.

Blahblahblahyadayadayada · 23/08/2020 19:20

Try using shaving alum after using the metal hair removing device. It’s the same as those aluminium crystal solid deodorants. Works well to prevent shaving rashes as well. You just wet the deodorant stick and gently rub over the area that you’ve plucked/shaved.

Sasuma · 24/08/2020 08:16

Yes facial razors would be an option, they give you the super smooth feeling and get rid of all the peach fuzz.

DiddlySquatty · 24/08/2020 15:24

Thank for all the suggestions
I’m a bit nervous about facial razors as it’s fair and fine fluff at the moment and I’m wary of locking myself into doing anything regularly.

I think it might be to with the hairs growing back? Because the spots don’t appear straight after but maybe a few days to a week after. Wondering if this means it’s in growing hair or something?

Girlwhowearsglasses · 24/08/2020 15:30

It’s ingrowing hairs. Try a gentle wipe with a Koren exfoliating towel (v cheap Amazon)

JonHammIsMyJamm · 24/08/2020 16:11

I was the same re facial razors but they don’t do anything in that way. You won’t end up with Desperate Dan stubble. Peach fuzz is really supersoft and fine, even cut at angle with a razor, it doesn’t come in stubbly like leg /armpit hair when it grows back in. Shaving your face or wherever doesn’t affect the thickness of regrowth, that’s controlled by what’s inside (genes, hormones etc), not what happens on the surface (unless you are using a specific proven hair thickening/growth ingredient like minoxidil).

If it comes a couple of days later, it’s likely to be ingrown hairs or irritation of the follicles. Exfoliating with a BHA like 2% salicylic acid or a gentle AHA like lactic acid will help to unblock the follicles and slough off old surface cells that are preventing normal function and causing the little spots.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 24/08/2020 16:14

The facial razors give a gentle dermaplane too, so they exfoliate the top layer off (painless, no problems). Honestly, I get the same little spots that you do but the facial razors are a game changer.

DiddlySquatty · 24/08/2020 19:07

@JonHammIsMyJamm thank you, I think I’m up for trying the Japanese razor to see if I get on better with that, can you recommend any particular ones?

OP posts:
DiddlySquatty · 24/08/2020 19:13

I’m so clueless 😂
Can anyone point me to a recommended salicylic acid product?

OP posts:
JonHammIsMyJamm · 24/08/2020 19:28

Paula’s Choice 2% salicylic in a gel formula

Paula’s Choice 2% liquid formula (same as above just in a watery formula)

They are great but if they are out of budget, these are also really good,

The Inkey List salicylic serum

The Ordinary salicylic - looks like this is being reformulated

Revolution 2% salicylic

There are absolutely LOADS on the market at all sorts of price points.
