Short hair and dresses

I've had a really short pixie style haircut for about 5 weeks now and so many of my clothes just don't look right on me anymore. Sad Used to have long-ish hair before (past my shoulders).

I absolutely love the short hair otherwise - so easy to wash and style, and generally suits my face really well. But I'm finding especially dresses look strange now. It's like having more hair around my face used to balance the look? I mainly wore my longer hair tied back/up anyway so didn't expect this. Absolutely gutted as I have some dresses I love, especially for autumn/winter.

Has anyone else felt the same? Or do you have a pixie cut and still look amazing in dresses?

I sort of get you, OP. I also have a very short cut and have felt a little awkward in dresses a few times. However, the right dresses definitely work!

Posted too soon due to wriggly baby 😆 here is one of my lovely dresses. Sometimes it's just a case of getting used to a new look.

Don't know about looking amazing :o but I definitely have short hair and wear dresses! I've always had more or less short hair so I'm used to it, and I like the kind of tension between shorter hair and a feminine dress. But I do think some looks work better than others (though that could be due to other factors too like body shape of course).

The main thing for me is I don't think it looks good if I have a high neck or collar, I need a lower cut, v neck or space around the neck area, as this looks less masculine. I also prefer print dresses and flowy dresses, not tight-fitting.

You could try googling some short-haired celebs and seeing what dress looks you like?

If it suits your face really well, I’m sure it does work with dresses.
Can you experiment with different earrings - studs, really longs ones, or really big ones and see how that looks?
And also maybe with some scarves and different types of necklaces?

You look lovely Oriflamme!

And yes, good point about scarves and necklaces Pancake, I think part of the issue may be summer clothes in general - I always feel more at home wearing layers so autumn clothes may be just work better when I can wear a cardigan or a jacket on top. Already rocking the big earrings look. Grin

I've had short hair for years and don't have a problem with dresses, but cannot get to grips with earrings with it!

I've got short hair and it's never occurred to me that there might be a short hair/dress combo issue. You're probably just getting used to your new look. When I first got mine cut short all I could think about was how massive my face was. Now I don't think about it at all, apart from when I occasionally put a long hair sized dollop of conditioner on my head by mistake

viccat · 22/08/2020 20:03

Rae36 I think mine is the opposite, my head looks too small now without hair to balance it out.

But you are probably right that I'm still getting used to it too, it definitely took a couple of weeks to adjust at all.

As a larger lady I do sometimes worry that I have a pin head on a big body, or look a bit butch, but then get over myself 😂

I found the same at first though I’m used to it now. I shy away from v necks or scoop necks and stick to boat necks, round necks, cowls etc.
Collared shirts are good.

I have a cashmere snood from John Lewis which I wore pretty much constantly over the winter with dresses. Planning on more this year. It bridged that gap!

Holothane · 22/08/2020 22:12

I’ve a number two hairstyle now and love it. You enjoy your dresses light scarf would that make your comfortable?

Whybirdwhy · 22/08/2020 22:34

You just need to try different styles of dresses, maybe you need short, shift dresses now? Maybe a V-neck doesn’t work anymore? Maybe you need to go maxi? You’ll probably find there’s a very specific style that works, you just need to work out what it is now that your hair is different.
Hair is an accessory in itself. Sometimes different haircuts require different outfit and shapes, just like you might wear different cardigans with different dresses due to the length/neckline/formality etc.

I’m sure there’s plenty of dresses out there for you!
