Ginger hair- where to begin with anything that compliments it?!

I have naturally ginger hair and cannot believe I have reached middle age without having any idea about how to style myself. As I get older it is becoming lighter and I’m looking into having it professionally coloured to add some richness- but I feel so lost about how to pick clothes or makeup to compliment my colouring. I have very, very pale skin with freckles. There is some slight redness on my face too.

Any ideas on what colours I should choose clothing-wise? Or complimentary makeup choices? Any tips of what to ask my hairdresser for? I’d never keep up with the roots from a full head of permanent hair dye. I would also love to ‘warm’ my skin up but have never dared using self tan.

Help! I’m fed up of looking rough!

Greens here along with dark oranges. I used to wear grey but I'm pale and my hair is fading so I look washed out in grey.

Rather than dyeing your hair why not try a red shampoo? I used to use the John Freida one but there are lots available, they build up colour gradually and once you get the shade you want just use it once a week. Also you don't have to worry about roots!

I have similar colouring to you OP. The best colours I find are 'dirty' colours, like yellowish (sage) green, purplish blues, peach pinks and copper reds. The worst are icy pastels, hard black and greige. And Barbie pink. Try to find a blue that matches your eyes, probably lightish with purple or grey undertone.

Never, ever try to darken your skin with fake tan or bronzer....if I could burn every 'orange' photo from my 20s....Blush hiding freckles doesn't really work either. Sheer foundation actually looks much better.

Jessica Chastain is my celebrity style inspiration.

On the plus side, we can usually go a long time between leg waxes.

I generally look awful in black. It always needs a fair bit of accent colour to stop me looking half dead.

I suit - blues, greens, purples and greys best. Some pinks are good too but that's very hit and miss. Mustard can look fabulous, as can teal. I wear a lot of green.

I have noticed two young women I know who have long ginger hair predominately wear clothing which is khaki, grey or charcoal. One girl also wears a light colour denim jacket which looks nice .

Neither of them are aware of colour consultations but seem to have picked clothes which naturally suit their colouring .

I have dark auburn hair (lighter at the bottom) and I’m probably going against the grain here, but I do wear a lot of black.

I read an interview with Julianne Moore once and she said that a stylist advised her to wear black as she already carried a lot of colour with her. If you google her you will see that she does wear a lot of black and dark colours.

My favourite colours are black, charcoal grey, navy, deep red, bottle green, rust. I have also been known to wear bright red.

Colours that look awful on me are light grey, pale blues, mid blues, whites, creams.

I sometimes put a bit of gradual tan on but mostly I can’t be bothered. I’m freckley so look tanned (ish) in the summer. I think all my favourite colours look good with my pale skin or slightly tanned.

I also spruce up the dark palette with lots of texture so it doesn’t become too boring.

Good luck and have fun.

guess what suits you depends a lot on your skin tone too.

I am ginger - more of an auburn and I look best in black/monochrome outfits. Green does nothing for me - just washes me out.

Don't worry - if you are middle-aged, it will go grey soon! Grin

angelfishrock · 25/08/2020 13:32

not necessarily. OP is middle ages without grey yet and ginger hair is known to grey later and to go lighter instead. My nan was ginger and still had a lot of colour when she passed away in her 80s.

I'm a red head and I look amazing in greens, mustard, black etc. Absolutely no pastel colours though - jewelry tones work best for me.

I'm a coppery/light brownish with gold bits in the sun. Pale yellowish skin and blue/green eyes. For years I wore nothing but autumn colours, thinking that would be what suited me best. Not so. Turns out warm spring colours make me come to life, actually looks like I have blood in my veins! The difference is quite remarkable.
