I wear quite a lot of shapeless smock dresses, midi length though, and think they work better if you are flat chested, otherwise they can be a bit tent-y.

What about something more this kind of shape to make the most of your bust?

Thanks - I think this is definitely more me because I've always had a bust even at 7 stone LOL.

Will try that instead. I think you are so right - you need to be flat chested and if they're shapeless they just look tenty and hang.

I'm a short hourglass with a big bust. I do love a smock dress, but I will either wear them

a) while on holiday out of sheer comfort and well knowing I probably look 5 sizes bigger than I actually am

b) belted at the waist with and worn with a wedge or a higher heel

The one the OP posted shared is not just friendly at all, especially with the tenth sleeves which will only make our top half look bigger. I think it generally looks like quite an unflattering dress anyway no matter what shape you are

I've bought quite a few this year and have embraced my inner smock/tent dress self. I fancied trying some new looks. It's actually been nice not trying to buy clothes that are 'slimming' but instead ones I like and that are super comfortable.

Welshponyslave · 18/08/2020 17:43

I have a bust and wear them with a cross body bag over, this gives definition to the bust and prevents the tent look being so obvious. They are so comfy in the heat and it is nice to not have to worry about my csection pouch!

MikeUniformMike · 18/08/2020 17:58

The linked smock in the OP has arm flounces at bustline so will make the bust look much wider.

The gathers are at waistline adding bulk to what is normally the slimmest part of the body.

The only place where it fits is the neckline. It's just a glorified big boxy t-shirt.

It looks good on the model because the model is probably very slim and flatchested.

Thanks all for your tips and advice! JudyStillDreamsofHorses posted a link to a much more flattering dress and MikeUniformMike - a badly designed dress designed for only very slim and flatchested people - sadly I've always had a sizeable bust since I was 12, even when very slim, the norks still remain, much to my DM's and DGM's (her DM) chagrin who were both flat as pancakes and envious...

I recently bought a dress similar to this. It looked horrendous on its own, it was also super short and I couldn't bend over. I paired it with a belt around the waist and also put a pair of cycling shorts underneath. The shorts wasnt visible but made me feel more comfortable. I wore it with heels but would look equally nice with pumps on a warm day.

Hope that helps Grin

Couldn't you return it?!

I bought a nice long tunic dress - which looked great on the person who had the dress - she owned a shop which sold these dresses amongst other things.

It was one of those dresses where if you bent over you could see everything and if you had amazing long legs with no cellulite it looked good but if not it looked ok but not brilliant.
