Curly girl method

I am new to this. I had long ago realised that only shampooing every 3/4 washes, and using conditioner instead, made my hair more manageable. Now I discover that I am not grim and this is an actual thing!

I have so many questions, but most sites do not answer them.

  1. I am allergic to fragrances. Are there any fragrance free products that I can try? I generally stick to Waitrose Pure for my hair.

  2. Can I use muslins instead of t-shirts to dry my hair?

  3. I never have time to treat my hair (plopping?). Is this critical? I have back problems that make washing my hair over the side of the bath really tricky. Deep conditioning means taking another shower to rinse out. Can CG be done in a wash-and-go style?

  4. Would it be better to cut my hair fairly short and start from scratch, rather than try to rescue my frizz?

If it's relevant, I'm white, 50s, and think I'm a 2b/c with non-porous, untreated hair.

Have you tried looking up curly girl method on YouTube?

I think there are different points of views as different things work for different people. I'm not sure a muslin cloth is smooth enough? The point of a t shirt is it won't rub your hair and make it frizzy like a towel would. I've got a microfibre towel otherwise a t shirt or shirt.

I wouldn't necessarily cut your hair off. If the ends are damaged then those will need trimming but that's it.

I'd join United Curls on Facebook, it's the best curly girl group (I've tried a few) and you can read the files at the top once you join, then ask any questions. I've been CG for about 20 months and my frizzy hair has never looked better.

  1. Yes, either ask in the group or do a search on the group page for 'fragrance free'

  2. Yes, I use a muslin.

  3. I don't plop my hair ever and due to herniated discs I wash upright under the shower rather than upside down. I tip my head side to side after to distribute products all through my hair and do the same as I diffuse. You can also clip up sections of hair as you diffuse or air dry, to get volume at the roots. Gel right to the roots also helps.

  4. Maybe but I'd give it a few months first. I have gradually grown out the hair damaged by straighteners, I still dye my hair (not exactly CG but I use CG safe products to dye it) and don't have damage from dying.
