Work 'Uniform' to simplify mornings

MrsGatsby99 · 16/08/2020 21:52

To be clear, I don't have to wear a uniform to work but thinking of creating myself a form of uniform when go back to work to make decisions easier. For example, a skirt/trousers and a couple of interchangeable tops to wear in rotation. I have never done this before in 20 years of work- will I get bored? Has anyone done this? Did it work for you?

I do this. Black trousers and different tops. Makes it a lot easier.

Toomanyradishes · 16/08/2020 21:55

I did this for years in winter at least, i had 5 smart jumpers on rotation with a few similar trousers which all went together. It was a semi casual office so it worked perfectly and i never had to worry about what i was wearing. You might get bored though, i dont but i suffer with chronic insomnia so anything that meant less thinking in the morning worked for me. Ive been working from home for a few years now but if i went back to an office i would do it again

NancyNoNickers · 16/08/2020 21:55

Do it, reduce the number of decisions you have to make in a day, it is very freeing not having to think about it.

ScrapThatThen · 16/08/2020 21:57

For autumn I quite like a roll neck with a jersey blazer, plus trousers. There does need to be some layering and seasonal changes in the uniform I think.

Ponks · 16/08/2020 21:57

I do this. Black trousers/ skirt, black t shirt, black jacket. Sometimes go crazy with a white t shirt 😂. Simple, no thought required, comfortable.

user1471453601 · 16/08/2020 21:58

Black and grey trousers and skirts, tops in many colours, job done

ThorFull · 16/08/2020 21:59

I do this. I work 3 days.
I have 3 dresses and 3 thick black tights (only 2 cardigans tho- usually reuse one)
Also have 2 black trousers and 3 black tops. Again cardigans is an issue. I must sort this before September.
A really comfy pair of boots, and 2 comfy pairs of shoes.
Sorted.

Titterofwit · 16/08/2020 22:01

I basically do this. I wear a rotation of 3 pairs of trousers in black or grey and tops to suit the season. At present its sleeveless tops and a cardigan because of the aircon in the office.
Ive noticed that there are quite a few people who wear similar rotations in my office,
It really does help sort the morning routine out though. I have my tops sorted into sleeveless, short sleeved and long sleeved on the shelves . Cardigans are hung on the back of the door and depending on which trousers Im wearing. All are washed and ironed and ready to wear. I just pick n mix .

Odile13 · 16/08/2020 22:01

I also like to wear black trousers with a rotation of similar tops. Makes things much easier.

I’ve seen articles about people wearing the same thing at work for days and nobody picking up on it. Apparently people don’t notice what we wear as much as we think!

Concretenotcement · 16/08/2020 22:01

I do, well did pre-Covid when I worked in the office. I had a number of just above knee length skirts, mostly black and white or black and green, which I wore with either a black or white cami and either black, navy or green cardigan. Opaque tights and flats.
Each of the skirts went with each of the cardigans, so whatever was clean and to hand made up an outfit.

My office has very effective air condition, so a cardigan or jumper was needed all year round..

The odd time I branched out with a different item of clothing I found I wore it once, it went in the wash and then was consigned to the wardrobe as I never had the one item that went with it available at the same time!

QueenCT · 16/08/2020 22:02

I sort of do. More mix and match

I have three skirts - black, navy and a grey print, and a pair of black wide leg trousers
Cardigans/jackets in black, navy, grey, and a couple of prints
Tops in grey, black, navy, green, maroon, and a couple of printed ones
Black and nude tights
Black loafers, black ankle boots, black t bar heels
Then far too many dresses Grin

But I know I can grab a black jacket, grey print skirt and green top and it goes. Or a black jacket, printed top, black skirt and so on

Megan2018 · 16/08/2020 22:02

I’ve always done it.

Black and grey trousers with various coloured tops and cardis
Dresses (with opaque tights)
2 pairs boots.

I have enough for 2 weeks and rotate but could have fewer but I’m tardy with laundry!

TableNiner · 16/08/2020 22:29

I do this, I only wear trousers, tops and cardigans. Sandals in summer, boots in winter, brogues or ballerinas in between. Dress up with different jewellery or scarves. Pretty much all go together as I follow HOC.

It is probably a bit boring but I haven’t worn the same outfit twice in about fifteen years, such are the permutations.

AriettyHomily · 16/08/2020 22:46

Yeo ore COVID I always did this, ten tops five bottoms and rotated. I had a lot of meetings with he same people so wanted two weeks rotation.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/08/2020 22:56

I just decide on an outfit the night before, and hang it in the bathroom. (Even now I am working from home I still do it, although I am not wearing work clothes to sit at the kitchen table.)

Piixxiiee · 16/08/2020 22:57

This is my new plan. I have grey and black trousers and a few patterned shirts, a few long/short sleeved tops and cardigan. 2 dresses. Flats and boots. I'm hoping to make mornings easier!

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 17/08/2020 06:50

I know a lot of people who do this. Usually its black bottom half (be it skirt or trousers) and a bright top. Does seem a bit dull though. Easier if you do wear a suit to work.

Another option is to have a colour palette, where all the colours go together then only buy things in those colours. This means everything goes. Avoid having black as one of the colours to avoid the uniform look.

I did used to work with a woman who wore long sleeved jersey dresses to work. She had loads and rotated them. Realised this is a quick way to dress for work (one item plus tights), but she always looked put together.

MrsGatsby99 · 17/08/2020 07:06

Thanks all. It sounds good. Less headspace taken up. Think I am going to try it.

You could see it more like a work capsule wardrobe. If you have one or two neural colours (black & one other works well) plus one or two accent colours that suit your colouring then everything should mix and match.

victoriasponge678 · 17/08/2020 07:10

I do this - my work uniform is a selection of 7-8 dresses and a few cardigans to wear. Life is so much easier and I just choose a dress and grab some tights. Shoes are kept under my desk at work anyway

askmehowiknow · 17/08/2020 08:04

I have a capsule wardrobe. For work I tend to stick to the same combinations of top/trousers dress/shoes etc.

I also often wear the same outfit on a certain day of the week! Mainly because it reflects my timetable for that specific day. Need for pockets and flats for example. But also because it's easier Grin

AnaViaSalamanca · 17/08/2020 09:10

I have a few formulas for days that I don't want to think

  1. dark jeans, silk camisole, blazer, ankle boots
  2. tight maxi skirt, peplum top
  3. black dress, white jacket, nude heels
(I only wear black, white, gray, red, and navy) workplace is smart casual, but people are quite well dressed in expensive items, yet still somewhat casual, no suits or pencil skirts (only PAs or analysts dress like that)
