After a period of depression that meant I barely took care of my own basic needs inc teeth brushing, my teeth are awful. They are almost glowing yellow and have plaque and the base by the gum.

Obviously a hygienist appointment for a descale isn’t happening right now but what can I do about the yellow? I’m absolutely devastated I let it get that far

I had a dental checkup last week and have a scaling appointment in two weeks time, DH has had a root canal and filling done two weeks ago.
Dentists are working with enhanced PPE and extra cleaning, so you can get treatment if you try.

Hygienists and dentists are open, I’m not sure they’re doing all procedures yet but you could start with a dentist/hygiene appointment and go from there. It sounds like it’s maybe beyond managing at hone.

Hello

Hygienists are open so get to one ASAP and explain your situation

Then start a good routine and they’ll be fab in no time !

Thank you, unfortunately ours are only doing emergency appointments still and apparently their waiting list is so long that there won’t be hygienist appointment for quite awhile

Ooohhh I've just bought a water flosser.
It's very good. Great for in between teeth and mine feel and look so much cleaner a week later.
They did bleed a bit at first, but apparently that's normal.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 16/08/2020 20:43

Thank you!

Was it the waterpik one or a generic one

It was from amazon. About £29 but I think there was a £2 off voucher.
It had hundreds of highest rated reviews.
I really recommend.

MoltonSilver · 16/08/2020 21:21

I bought a waterpik. I'm very happy with it but my dentist didn't approve when I mentioned it. She said that floss it better. I still really like the waterpik but floss is certainly cheaper.

Do you use an electric toothbrush? That and a whitening toothpaste might help.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/08/2020 10:36

Get some hydrogen peroxide 6% or higher, an own brand chlorhexidine mouth wash, wisdom interdigital brush from Superdrug, and some eucryl powder.

Mix 50-50 mouthwash peroxide rinse twice a day.
Brush with eucryl twice a week.
Use the brush to clean the tartar off.

Check out the fairywill toothbrush and water flosser, the brush comes with an interdental brush that will help out your gum line.

whattodoforthebest2 · 17/08/2020 17:16

You can go to any hygienist AFAIAA, as it's private anyway, so just look for another practice that has space.

SunshineChatter · 17/08/2020 17:34

My BF and I saw our hygienist last month. If yours is booked up find another one. No need to wait and be bummed about your teeth just because you can't see a specific hygienist. Plenty of fish in the sea :-)

Ellapaella · 17/08/2020 18:16

The Tic interdental brushes will be very helpful until you can see a hygienist. Try the smallest ones first and then size up as required.
I had heart surgery just over a year ago and was told prior to my op that I had severe gum disease, I was shocked as my teeth look healthy, I've never had any fillings or dental issues.
Everyday since then (for 18 months) I brush (electric toothbrush), floss and then use the interdental brushes every time I clean my teeth (at least twice daily) and rinse with a non alcoholic mouthwash afterwards. I've only managed one deep clean with the hygienist as she is always so busy. I had a check up with my dentist last week who was really impressed with my gums and said I've pretty much manage to reverse the situation and have hardly any issues now, no pocketing and things are looking very healthy.
I've tried once of the waterflossers and personally didn't get on with it very well.
