Hair breakage (olaplex, hair masks)

I'm currently upstairs having a little cry about my hair which I know is so stupid but I feel so gutted about it. its dyed blonde (hair dresser every 8 week) and she has said how it's been breaking at the back for a while now. but this morning I've realised I don't have my 'swoopy' side fringe anymore as it's broken and short and all the bits at my crown are too. my hairdresser recommended me a hair vitamin. She also mentioned olaplex. Has anybody used it and and is it worth buying the shampoo and conditioner? it's expensive but I can buy it if it works (would probably spend all my savings on anything right now)

My hair is very thin and gets greasy easily, I feel stuck in a cycle of not putting too much conditioner on (or it looks like I've not even washed it) so I have to wash it more. if I put lots of conditioner on it looks greasy. any help would be massively appreciated x

I had my hair professionally dyed (not blonde though) for many years and my hairdresser recommended the Olaplex treatment route about four years ago. It was OK but didn’t stop the thinning, breakages and hair loss.

Expensive conditioners increasingly made it look good for a day, then frizzy and greasy at the same time.

Lockdown gave me time to pause and realise my hairdresser was just encouraging me to throw more money at the problem. My hair was still breaking and falling out and Olaplex benefits were increasingly short term.

For the past five months I’ve been using a box semi permanent (no ammonia) every 3/4 weeks. I’m 100% grey but it does a good job of covering, I may be brave enough to try a permanent colour shortly.

The condition of my hair is massively improved, I never thought I’d have smooth glossy locks again. No breakages, less hair loss although I still have thin areas which may never recover due to my age.

I’ve still got some Olaplex 3 which I’m using as an occasional mask at home as the old, overtreated hair grows out.

Like many other people I will never go back to salon colouring, I’m very cross about the huge amounts of money I’ve wasted.

I have opalex every time I have balayage and think it is excellent

My hairdresser mixes olaplex with the colour even she dyes mine. I did buy a bottle but wasn’t blown away and have been more impressed with hair masks from body shop (banana) or boots (Josh woods). I can’t have too much bleach or my hair breaks. Red tones are good for nourishment if you fancy a colour change.

I hope only your roots are bleached? if she uses colour on the length and ends then this is what could be causing breakage.
It could be worth changing hairdressers?
Overprosessing hair colour causes damage, bad cut will make it look worse too. If heat styling, use a product that protects against high heat.

I like Olaplex, the thing is your hair doesn't feel any different straight away. It's a builder rather than a moisturiser so you need to use it a few times to notice a difference. Unless your on a budget I would try it and give it a good go over a month.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 17/08/2020 14:41

Did nothing for me, to be honest i think your only solution is to stop bleaching. Bleach London do a mask for bleached damaged hair that has good reviews- reincarnation mask

I use Olaplex shampoo (4), conditioner (5) and leave in creme (6). I do think they have helped my hair but the big change is going from a permanent dye to a vegetable based colour wash (Aveda).
I have naturally fine hair and not a lot of it so regrowing hair in areas where it was thin and that hair not breaking or falling out is brilliant.
If I were to pick one Olaplex product I would say the conditioner is the most effective for me.

SunOnMyWindow · 18/08/2020 22:05

To be honest I think you should change your hairdresser. She/he should not trying to maintain the condition of your hair as part of the dye process. Opalex is good but I think you should have a consultation with a very experienced hairdresser

SunOnMyWindow · 18/08/2020 22:06

Should be trying (not should not...)

ZiggZagg · 18/08/2020 22:08

I don't rate Olaplex (ex- hairdresser). I use a weekly Coconut Oil mask and it's been miraculous for my hair which was extremely damaged

Chezacheza · 18/08/2020 22:08

Bite the bullet and let it grow out. This happened to mine so I had a short bob and left it alone for a year.

EnoughAlready2020 · 18/08/2020 22:31

@ZiggZagg which one would you recommend? I've been using Olaplex and not really been impressed - it's early days though.

ZiggZagg · 18/08/2020 22:35

@EnoughAlready2020 Just actual Coconut Oil, work it into my roots and scalp and comb through the ends, leave on overnight and wash as usual. I also use Aussie 3 minute miracle which makes my hair feel amazing! I'll see if I can find before and after pics.

EnoughAlready2020 · 18/08/2020 23:25

@ZiggZagg thank you! Will buy some tomorrow.

My hair is bleached and got damaged when a hair dresser somehow turned it all purple with toner to the ends and had to bleach it all out, again.

I have been using Olaplex 1,2 and 3 (1 and 2 had to be bought on Ebay), as well as 2 different masks (one called Hair Mayonnaise, bought from an Afro-Carribean beauty supply) and the other a deep Keratin mask. I have a heat bonnet that attaches to my hair dryer that I use with the masks.

I have just ordered a silk sleep bonnet, as well.
