I am finding dumbbells incredibly useful and would love to hear about more equipment/tools I can use, but not heavy machinery like a static sports bike, etc. Cheers

Kettle bells? You won't lose weight as such but toned and fitter. Weight loss is 80% diet.

In order to lose weight you have to cut your calorie intake. Exercise will help tone and make you fitter. I’ve been exercising along with Fir for over 50s on YouTube. 35 minutes of gentle aerobics and 20 minutes of weights, I certainly look better!

For me, dumbbells are enough, but you need to get heavier ones as you get stronger. I haven't lost weight but have put on muscle and lost fat, and consequently got slimmer.

Ankle weights and wrist weights are great.

OstrichFeathers · 16/08/2020 10:52

I invested in adjustable hand weights and a light bar that i can swap the weight plates between. I use the bar for eg squats, rows and presses so I can up the weight as holding increasingly heavy hand weights didn’t work for me.

@mdh2020 please can you link to the YouTube you use? I usually use Fitness Blender or Live Fit Girl but I’m always looking g for new ones to mix it up a bit. Thanks!

Yes I agree diet is key and I am tackling that. I have not drank alcohol for 5 months and have cut down on sugar by around 80%. I also don't eat pasta, rice, potatoes or bread, or processed food. Things are happening incredibly slowly but I am 50 years old and perimenopausal.

Thank you for your advice/recommendations. @mdh2020 I'd also appreciate a link to the YouTube video please.

I second the ankle and wrist weights. Amazing what a difference just a couple of extra kgs make, as you go about the housework.

Infullbloom · 16/08/2020 14:51

Going against the grain, you can lose weight through exercise alone if doing it correctly. I use dumbells, kettle bells, resistance bands, a punch bag and trx suspension trainer. The only thing that takes up any space is the punch bag. Weight training actually burns mores calories than cardio alone and keeps your metabolic rate up for longer too.
Obviously if you eat loads of rubbish you won't lose weight but eating sensibly and strength training can result in weight loss with the added bonus of building muscle and giving a toned appearance.

I second the TRX. It's amazing and can be brought anywhere. You can buy the replica from Decathlon for 15quid. I also have a yoga mat, a kettlebell, a few dumbbells and an exercise ball (for planks, push ups, balance) and that's my lockdown gym.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/08/2020 15:41

I’d say weights too, builds bone density too.

I can't open that but it is a suspension trainer. Google TRX decathlon, it'll give you a link to their generic one. It is amazing. I attached mine to fences and all sorts over lockdown

doadeer · 16/08/2020 22:26

Resistance bands are good if you do pilates type movement.
