Can you use adult shampoo on a child?

DD7 gets very stinky hair if I do not wash it every night. We are currently using Loréal kids shampoo on her and we also tried other kids and baby shampoos but they do not make it any better at all.
Her hair is on the thin side (but not extremely wospy thin) and it goes to just above her bottom (she will not let me cut it).
I want to try my shampoo (tresemmé) on her as I find it cleans my hair very well but would it be ok to use it on a 7 year old?

Of course it is fine to use. It won't be "no more tears".

We all use Herbal Essense in this house and have for years - I don't even think dc2 had baby/child shampoo.

ShyTown · 15/08/2020 18:52

The only differences are that kids stuff don’t sting if it gets in the eyes and the sickening scents like ‘silly strawberry’. A 7 year old will understand to keep her eyes closed so it’ll be fine to use yours.

Yes!! Ds is 7 and gets his hair FILTHY from all the football, rolling in dirt and climbing trees he does!
I gave up with the kids shampoos when he was about 4, we just use whatever is on offer, Pantene, herbal essences, dove, you name it he's washed his hair with it, he's loving the banana hair mask that boots have just released at the mo!

Yeah I’ve just sacked off baby shampoo for the 4yo. Only had head and shoulders, which I was a bit wary of using, but its finally cleared up the cradle cap that’s plagued him since he was tiny Grin

I have since ds 6 was 1 year.Totally fine.

I think parabens are banned in baby/child products so cancer causing chemicals are in adult shampoo but not child shampoo. Also the eye stinging factor.

whatisheupto · 15/08/2020 19:09

Kids shampoos have just as many chemicals as adult stuff. Of course it's fine.

SapphireSeptember · 15/08/2020 21:22

Parabens are fine, they don't cause cancer, although they might cause skin sensitivity in some people. (They're a much maligned group of chemicals that were fed to lab rats in high concentrations, which caused them some problems, obviously. The way they're actually used in cosmetics and toiletries, in much lower concentrations, doesn't cause those problems in humans.)

I remember my mum using a fancy tea tree shampoo on me when I had nits, I dunno if it helped but it smelt nice (might be why I love the smell of tea tree oil now.)

Faith in Nature shampoos are very kind to hair and skin, and contain few chemicals. I especially like their lavender and geranium one. My son liked the chocolate scented one.

Absolutely.

Yes I use adult shampoo (herbal essences) on my kids. I also got an ace lush shampoo bar that cleaned all our hair really well. I hate having loads of different products . So cluttered.

itustiime · 15/08/2020 23:33

Yep, been using Pantene or treseme on DS since he was 2

WinWinnieTheWay · 15/08/2020 23:35

Cut it. I think there is a rule that hair should never be longer than elbow length.

kateemo · 16/08/2020 09:31

Most cosmetic formulations are applicable for humans age 3 and up. Just be careful about sensitivities (end of the ingredient label) and as others mentioned, kids are more prone to getting product into eyes. But in case it does, and you’ve used aN appropriate amount of product, it should be safe.

Products for children under the age of three go through a different cosmetic safety assessment protocol.

SapphireSeptember · 16/08/2020 11:21

@WinWinnieTheWay Is that a general rule for children or does that include adults too?

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/08/2020 11:47

Lee Stafford sell a shampoo brush to get the shampoo right down to the roots. It gives you that really clean feeling you get after the hairdressers have washed it.

apricotblossom · 16/08/2020 11:51

DS had appalling cradle cap for years. Nothing shifted it, tried olive oil, kids specialist shampoos, everything. Finally cracked and gave one treatment of the full-on adult T Gel. Sorted it after one wash.

WinWinnieTheWay · 16/08/2020 14:53

@SapphireSeptember for everyone.

I don't know if it's a rule that's a bit dated, but hair longer than elbow length makes me shudder.

whirlwindwallaby · 16/08/2020 14:59

Just used regular shampoo when the bottles of baby head to toe wash I was given when DS was born ran out. So about age three?

SapphireSeptember · 16/08/2020 22:40

@WinWinnieTheWay I'm afraid to say I've been breaking this rule for many years, as have a colleague and a dear friend of mine. Grin
My colleague is from the Philippines and has the most gorgeous, thick, long dark hair that almost goes down to her knees! Envy My friend's is longer and thicker than mine, and a lighter shade of brown. Mine is thigh length and dark brown. I love really long hair. Smile

Always use adult shampoo on my 8 year old. She only needs her hair washed every couple of weeks though - could you be washing too much? Daily washing is a LOT!
