Dehydrated skin

Hi everyone! So I’ve always had super hydrated plump skin that feels soft, but since mid March my skin has been so dry and dehydrated (no flakiness just tightness) and it just looks very lack lustre. I’ve used the cetaphil rich cream for the last 4 years and it’s always done the trick, but since then I moisturise and within a few hours my skin just feels taught. I have no idea whats happened 😭 can be very uncomfortable sometimes when smiling etc and is worse when i wake up in the morning. Have tried lots of other moisturisers but nothing is really helping :(

Should add I’ve tried moisturising on damp skin which has helped a bit but my skin still isn’t how it used to be :(

As you get older your skin tends to dry and you loose collagen. I am 45 and a strict fan of collagen and retinol. The collagen will plump up the skin and the retinol will take away the dry skin and a new layer of skin.
Have you ever tried collagen? you need the purest form. Holland and barrett do one but it is not pure and mixed with bulking agents. Collagen change the texture and give the skin a shine but take about 6-8 week to notice results. What products have you used?

Drink lots of water too.

A service I visit pushes summer levels of fluids all year round and the patients legs look so much better.

mineofuselessinformation · 15/08/2020 19:08

I've found water a massive help too.
I'm working out on a treadmill and drink about one and a half litres extra.
It's made a massive difference to my skin, all over, but particularly on my face where my perioral dermatitis is much better.

MumsMagic101 · 15/08/2020 19:19

I’m only 23 😳 So my skincare routine is cleanse face with cerave hydrating cleanser, apply laneige cream skin refiner toner and use cetaphil to moisturise on damp ish skin! I probably could drink more water but find it so difficult as I’m so busy all day. Such a nightmare

Definitely agree with drinking more water, you need to moisturise from the inside as well.

damnthatanxiety · 15/08/2020 19:35

If you feel at 23 that your skin isn't what it used to be then you have problems!!! Try using a richer moisturiser. Perhaps the one you have simply isn't rich enough. And as everyone has said, drink water.

MumsMagic101 · 15/08/2020 19:54

I think the issue is that my skin cannot retain moisture. I have tried lots of rich creams which end up sitting ontop of my skin and of I use a thin layer I am dry within a few hours. Will up my water intake see if it helps

Try the Superdrug pure hydration serum. It's about £3 and fantastic, very soothing too. And if you don't like it well, it's only cheap!

loveisanopensore · 15/08/2020 20:22

Try a serum with hylaurlonic acid and then adding a moisturiser on top.

I also find exfoliating with a glycolic acid every few days helps.

Plump82 · 15/08/2020 21:01

I cant stop recommending this but i use Clarins SOS Comfort Face Mask. Its amazing. It makes my skin feel so good and look so healthy. Its expensive but a little goes a long way.

I have suffered from dehydrated skin for years and I feel your pain! Summer is actually almost as bad as winter for me due to the combination of air con, fans and sweating. What keeps it under control for me:
DrinkIng lots of water, avoid caffeine/alcohol
Taking Omega oil and collagen&HA supplements (unless you are confident your diet is rich in these)
Avoid getting your face wet - I put a layer of oil on my face in the shower and only wash my face at the end. I find hard water areas (eg SE England) especially drying.
Skincare:
I use the same CeraVe cleanser as you, or oil cleanse. Hyaluronic acid is a must and by far the best I’ve tried is Hada Labo premium one (yellow bottle). You must use it on damp skin otherwise it can suck moisture out in stead of adding it, then seal with an occlusive. Ceramides are supposed to repair the skin barrier, I use Ceramol 311 cream. The Eucerin Aquaporin range is also great for dehydration, especially the rich cream which makes your face nice and plump. It’s not oily so doesn't sit on top of your skin.
Make sure any Sunscreen, primer or foundation are hydrating and alcohol free, otherwise you undo all your good work.
There are lots of good masks for instant relief - Origins drink up, for example.

Personally I’d avoid retinol and acids until you have the dehydration under control or you risk making it worse, but if you want to exfoliate then lactic acid is gentle and doesn’t dehydrate.

Aquamarine1029 · 15/08/2020 21:38

No one is so busy that they can't drink enough water. Drink the damn water! Also, I highly recommend organic almond oil at night. It's amazing.

MumsMagic101 · 15/08/2020 22:06

OhRosalind thank you so much those tips are so helpful! Glad to have found someone who understands :) and I know but I’m a restaurant manager working full time so drinking water constantly is actually quite difficult if I don’t want to be on the loo every 5 mins haha! I drink a good two litres a day all ready but will try my hardest to drink more :)

you need a good hylaurlonic acid!

HostessTrolley · 16/08/2020 08:18

Sometimes not enough oils in your diet can cause dry skin

doadeer · 16/08/2020 08:44

What about trying a facial oil before your moisturiser?

Could you also try a Balm cleanser?

What's your budget?

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/08/2020 08:51

I was thinking an oil too. The ordinary do some.

jan9876 · 16/08/2020 10:50

I started using serum, moisturiser and then an oil (the oil just at night). I also started using a water hydration spray (Garnier i liked) And I found it all really helped rehydrate my tired skin!

Lacey2019 · 16/08/2020 10:52

Get the origins overnight mask, the avocado one. Look fantastic have 20% off with FB20 it’s changed my life!

MumsMagic101 · 16/08/2020 18:37

I don’t mind paying if the products are going to work! Have ordered the Superdrug hydrating toner so hopefully that helps 😘 I was actually going to get the origins overnight mask but it had fragrance in which I don’t want to risk on my sensitive skin atm :( wish brands wouldn’t use alcohol/fragrance 🤬

hydrating serum not toner *

@MumsMagic101

hydrating serum not toner *
I use the garnier water with oil in and then the mask :) both have made a big difference xx

Fingers crossed whatever you decide to use works x

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 17/08/2020 15:07

hylaurlonic Acid, the ordinary do one as do avon a drop before your regular moisturiser or added to it will help

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 17/08/2020 15:09

Try oil cleansing too, it's made a massive improvement to my skin tone and there are lots of cleansing oils out now, or just use olive oil.
