How to get rid of unwanted, but expensive coat?

My DM has been lumbered with a coat that she doesn't want. It is almost brand new and belonged to a friend of hers, who died earlier this year. The friend's DH said he 'wanted her to have it' and she felt unable to say no and even felt she should give him some money for it, but it's not her size or her style and she doesn't want it.

My DM is not remotely computer savvy and doesn't want to just dump it at a charity shop as a) she would feel guilty, b) it's an expensive coat and c) she had to bloody pay this man for it Angry

Any idea how she can get rid of it and not be out of pocket? It's a wool coat from the House of Bruar and probably cost £200 or so new, but she doesn't expect to get that for it.

Can you eBay it for her?

HollowTalk · 15/08/2020 16:29

She had to pay for it?! He sounds like a very nice guy.

I could eBay it for her, although I don't have an account and am fucked off that I even have to get involved. I'm so pissed off with this man for basically guilting my DM into taking his DW's fucking coat.

Is there a local dress agency? They would take it if they thought it was something they could sell. (House of Bruar is normally good quality but very classic so it would depend on their customer base.) They would keep a percentage (can't remember how much typically) of whatever it sold for but she'd have none of the hassle.

I've sold designer clothes through a dress agency they took 50%. What about local FB selling page?

olivo · 15/08/2020 18:27

Sell it for her online and she could buy something nice by which to remember her friend with any money made?

Ubermints · 15/08/2020 18:34

Selling it online is the obvious solution, but if she can't, and you don't want to...
That leaves selling it in person somehow or giving it away, really, doesn't it?

Mellonsprite · 15/08/2020 18:35

I have sold some items in a local FB selling page. Much easier than eBaying and faffing with postage and potentially cheeky buyers.

Another vote for local FB selliing group. I've sold several ehem mistakes, still boxed and everything. No fees, no fuss

This might be a way to get a proportion of a better price than local Facebook or eBay: thrift.plus/pages/donate - I read about it on a page in the guardian about a range of eco/sustainable tweaks we could all make to our lifestyles.
