Jewellery inspiration and a question about jewellery care (Tatty Devine)...

Hi!

I'm looking for some new jewellery, probably some necklaces but maybe some earrings too.

I like things that are arty or vintage-style, so open to statement pieces.

I like to wear sterling silver pieces, but like Tatty Devine-style jewellery. However, so much of this kind of jewellery seems to come with silver tone/silver-plated chain...how do I clean this? Does it last?

Budget is up to £50 per piece, but would pay more for the right thing!

I've always found the chains from Tatty to be of very poor quality for the price - they tarnish so easily. They really let them down, the acrylic is usually so well made. The gold ones chains are the worst though

I think Rosa Pietsch uses proper silver in her necklaces, if that's the kind of thing you're after.

Silver plate is not worth it, it will just tarnish over and over. Silver is cheap enough that you should be able to buy pieces in solid silver TBH (brand dependent! Tiffany charge the Earth for silver).

Gold filled is stronger than gold plated. If you look on Etsy plenty of artists use gold filled instead of plated, it lasts longer. Gold plating can tarnish and rub off fairly quickly depending on your lifestyle and how much you rub against the jewellery (i.e. if it's a ring vs pendant).

@BinRaidingRaccoon, it's SUCH a shame about Tatty, isn't it? I love their stuff...can't understand why they don't use sterling silver! Oh my, thank you for the Rosa Pietsch recommendation - I've never come across it before and it's gorgeous!

Thanks @Youcunnyfunt, that's useful info.

Isn't it just?! It's unnecessary cost cutting, I'd happily pay more not to have a green neck.

If you like that sort of thing, I’d really recommend Wolf & Moon jewellery. I think they use brass for their chains but I’ve never had any tarnishing.

They have some really lovely bits.

I have a Tatty "name" necklace and replace the chain every year. It is very quick to tarnish.

Do you just do it yourself? It is a shame as I barely wore mine and it is so tarnished. Like previously mentioned the acrylic is good and does not scratch, but the chains are shite.

My TDV chain hasn’t tarnished....it was bought around 10 years ago, wonder if the quality has changed since?

I’ve recently found ‘no basic bombshell’ for earrings, which is similar but really affordable...surprisingly good as the earrings don’t give me an allergic reaction unlike literally every high street shop. nobasicbombshell.com/

I can't wear plated metals due to allergies but I either replace the chains with Sterling silver ones myself or more recently I've bought a few pieces from Curiology as they have Sterling silver as an option.

GrimDamnFanjo · 16/08/2020 10:17

@Shesapunkpunk I pop into one of the shops every time I'm in London. There's a charge for the replacement chain but it's just a few quid iirc. I probably replace once or twice a year.

I have loads of TD and the only chain I have ever had a problem with was on the gin necklace. Mine was from their original collaboration with Gilbert and George, not the current one, so at least ten years ago. I keep everything in the boxes, maybe that helps? They replaced the gin chain for a nominal charge - like £1.50 - and it’s been fine.
