Eek! I have a wedding to attend tomorrow (small family thing with about 6 people)

I have been having problems with my skins for a since feb/March time it’s probably hormonal, and every time I apply foundation (I use Lancôme teint idole ultra wear) it just doesn’t seem to sit on my skin right! It goes cakey in place and then patchy and really shows up my fine hairs on my face. never did this before lockdown I’m sure it’s partly user error and partly skin issues.

I look awful can anyone recommend a YouTube video I’ve looked at a few and in all honesty I have no idea what they are on about!

Or any tips from anyone!

I’m going to do another practice after I’ve had a shower.

If you're having problems with your skin Lisa Eldridge does a great one on concealing acne, and another great one about foundation basics. They're on YouTube and her website.

For the fine hairs (vellum) on your face, why don't you try dermaplaning (fancy word for shaving your face)? I have olive skin, very dark hair, and have been doing it for a year or so, once a month approximately. As anyone who's done it I can assure you your vellum will NOT grow back darker or thicker. I use this type of razor www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00621EBTW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8 which you can probably find in Boots, Superdrug, etc since you can't order online as you'd need to do it today. I suggest doing it tonight or putting on a high SPF if you're doing it in the day.

You haven't got much time before tomorrow! A few suggestions: a foundation brush/beauty blender, a primer (I like smashbox myself) or a tinted moisturiser/BB cream.

I'd prob go to a supermarket and try option 3.

Am wondering if you've got dead skin cells making it candy - a clinique lady told me this was my problem when foundation wasn't blending in properly and she was right

Cakey not candy

It sounds like your skin is dehydrated if foundation is going patchy. Basically what happens is your skin ends up absorbing the water content of your foundation and leaving the pigment behind. If you can (I don’t know what skincare/medication you’re using for your skin problems so obviously don’t do this if it’s not appropriate) I’d try using a chemical exfoliant tonight, and then tomorrow use a hyaluronic acid serum to boost the hydration levels of your skin, seal it in with a moisturiser and then apply the foundation on top. You could also try a primer underneath the foundation. I also definitely agree that a brush or beauty blender will help too!

For tutorials, I like Lisa Eldridge and Hannah Martin on YouTube, you can’t go far wrong.

I have a smash box primer and under eye primer doesn’t really help I’ve tried both!

Maybe I need to do a really good exfoliation first, then try again! I have some number 7 exfoliating stuff somewhere will dig it out

@SunshineChatter thank you I will have a look and see if I can find something similar, I have loads of hair on my face it’s never really been a problem but I can’t seem to get anything to sit right!

Go get yourself a good chemical exfoliator from Boots. For example, The Ordinary’s BHA/AHA peel. Glycolic acid could also work. Use the peel (doesn’t actually peel anything) - your skin will feel lovely afterwards.

Then, get a non-greasy moisturiser - one with a gel like consistency, probably, rather than a creamy one. Smear it all over your face and leave it for ten mins. Then look to see where your skin has absorbed the moisture - add a little bit more to those places. Blot it off gently in any places where it hasn’t completely absorbed. This will help to ensure your skin is evenly hydrated.

For longevity I like to spray my face with an Urban Decay setting spray before I apply my makeup.

Robert Welsh has great tutorials. Most of what I’ve said here comes from him and I e done it all myself.

MistyIsland · 13/08/2020 10:30

I shall pop to boots after lunch.

So a chemical peel and non greasy moisturiser?

So shall I exfoliating this morning then do a chemical peel?

Also is it worth getting some razors and taking the peach fuzz of first?

Dermaplaning (so using a razor on your face), acid toners, and scrubs all basically do the same thing, which is to remove excess dead skin cells. So definitely don’t do all three or your poor face will suffer! My preference would be for a gentle chemical exfoliant. The ordinary is a good choice, they do a glycolic acid and a lactic acid, personally I would stay clear of their AHA BHA peel because it’s so strong and if you’re not used to it you might end up with a red face for the wedding. I would use it just tonight and not tomorrow morning or you might overdo it.

Then a moisturiser or a serum under your moisturiser, look for something that contains hyaluronic acid (it might be called sodium hyaluronate on the ingredients list).

SunshineChatter · 13/08/2020 11:36

Good point. Pick one only. If you pick a chemical (or manual for that matter) exfoliator you will still have the peach fuzz on your face though. If you dermaplane (tons of videos on YouTube - very easy) the vellum will also be gone and your make up will sit MUCH better. I do all three, in rotation. Not often though I must confess.

FartnissEverbeans · 13/08/2020 17:46

That’s a good point re: chemical exfoliators and potentially being a bit red. Personally I don’t have sensitive skin (I use exfoliators way more often and for longer than you’re supposed to) and I didn’t experience any redness after my first time, but maybe something gentler like Pixi Glow Tonic would remove the risk if you’re concerned. Or perhaps don’t leave them on for as long as the instructions tell you to.

FartnissEverbeans · 13/08/2020 17:47

*reduce the risk, rather than remove it
