Hair colour - advice please

Finally getting hair cut & colour tomorrow, can’t wait! Have booked for highlights & toner. In the past I feel I never seem to get the colour quite as I want it. In the past it’s been either too ashy which makes it look greyer than I am or too dark (when I had lowlights added). It’s so expensive that this time I want to get it right so am taking pics!

Natural colour is brown with greys. Previous highlights are dry and frizzy at the ends so I’ll be getting a good cut to get rid of these. I’d like to cover these and get AH’s colour - see pics. What do I need to ask for to achieve this?

Also what does the toner do? Thanks for any help

Just show the photo but I think your hair might be too dark to achieve that in one session. I’d expect it to look more warm/ginger than blonde

@Hairthrowaway ok thank you - do you mean because I would need a build up of highlights to get that effect? So after a few appointments?

Hopeful bump

Yes it’s possible it might take 2 appointments. Dark hair goes through an orange then yellow stage before it gets blonde, so it’s safer for the condition of your hair to make the transition as gradual as possible. You could attempt to go to that colour in one appointment but they’d use high lift products which might compromise the integrity of your hair and cause breakage etc

PainintheholeSIL · 12/08/2020 18:11

That's a lot brighter than your hair is a the minute... I'd do a very generous, probably full head of hilites but scattered to achieve the look in the pic, and an all over colour level 7 to lighten the rest of the hair

PainintheholeSIL · 12/08/2020 18:14

Not trying to contradict anyone else but to achieve any blonde you need pre lightener/high lift colours. You can't go blonde without them.
If the products are good quality and your hairdresser knows their stuff your hair will not be compromised.
I am a hairdresser

Thank you @PainintheholeSIL. I’m only booked in for half a head tomorrow. Sorry if i sound stupid but do I need to specify the shade of blonde I want the highlights to be ie golden? Once i had them and they were too ashy and made me look grey! When they show me them in the book I can never visualise what it will look like on my hair.
Would the all over colour no.7 go in between the highlights over all of my hair and be permanent, so I would need to get my roots done frequently to touch this up?

No you wouldn't have to specify the shade of blonde. Just show the pic. The all over colour would have to be permanent in order to lighten your hair. Regrowth probably 6-8 weeks. Colour like that is all about maintenance! The better you maintain the better your colour will be

Littlemiss74 · 12/08/2020 21:20

@PainintheholeSIL thanks so much that’s really helpful and regrowth time not as bad as I thought.
What would I need to do for maintenance - do you mean like good shampoo & conditioner? I have to say the ends of my hair currently feels horrible, can’t wait to get it cut!

No problem at all. Good shampoo and conditioner, ask your hairdresser to recommend, and keeping up with your colour maintenance, not leaving huge gaps between appts. The more regularly you have it done, the less work there is to do, better for your hair!

@PainintheholeSIL thank you I’m looking forward to new hair tomorrow!
