Growing hair out to natural colour advice

I have been dying my hair for around ten years, either salon or box, I'm now fed up of the maintenance and have so far grown my natural colour to my ears in lock down has anyone else had any experience doing this advice ect?

No advice as such but you have my admiration for having the guts to do it. I have used box dyes for years and since lockdown my hair seems to have suffered. I would love to shave it all off and start over again but my family have said they will disown me if I do that :)

I had my hair dyed as close to my natural colour as possible, then started letting it grow out. Could you get a hairdresser do the ombre/balayage thing (different colours at top and bottom, or highlights from a certain point down), maybe a pink, purple or other funky type colour on the bottom, blended in? Then just keep letting it grow it out from there, with just regular trims?

Something like in the pic?

@anordinarymum trust me I contemplated shaving it all too! I'm sticking at doing it just wanted to know if anyone knew a way to speed it up 🤣 my hair is really long now and I'm hoping to chop it to the colour length once it is at my shoulders I just hope it doesn't take too long!

*to do

Hairthrowaway · 09/08/2020 01:33

Why do you want to grow it out as opposed to getting the dyed bits coloured closer to your natural colour? Is it to prevent further damage?

I think the difference between us is I am grey/white/God knows.. it's been a long time :)
I don't like using dye tested on animals so I use herbatint but it dries my hair out and I did a stupid thing and changed the colour so I look a twat !

@hairthrowaway, it's because my hair for some reason when dyed any colour seems to slowly revert back to a reddish tones hue so I thought dying the dyed bits a closer colour would defeat the object and just prayed my hair would grow to my shoulders fairly quickly I read online shoulder length hair is around 12 inches and mine is currently 3-4 of natural

I've found that the bottom bits of my hair, dyed to look like the natural colour, are still a bit different, especially in sunlight, and am considering something like the pic I posted myself now, (something that actually looks like it's supposed to be different colours top and bottom, iyswim).

Also forgot to add my advanced uni studies and work means I can't have any crazy colours

Ohh I see! I read online that it takes a year to grow 6 inches, so you’ll be stuck with two-toned hair for a while. What colour is your dyed hair? If it’s brunette, try blue shampoo to knock out the red tones, it works wonders.

You can also try green shampoo but these aren’t as commonplace. Matrix has one but it’s designed for black hair, I think lighter hair may get tinted darker, so blue is a safer option.

Maybe try hair supplements to naturally boost your hair regrowth rate. Iron is good (for higher ferritin)

I've been through this and, it's a frustrating stage! I found using semi-permanent box dyes was the easiest way to get through it. They don't do as much damage to your hair and fade gradually, so they don't feel so high-maintenance. If you can find a colour that's halfway between your dyed ends and natural colour, it just evens everything out.

Definitely try blue shampoo! I use Matrix brass off, it’s fairly cheap too
