Hi all,

Please help! I don't know where to begin to look for new products for a skin care routine. I am 23 and I am suffering from really bad breakouts. I have quite dry skin but oily nose. It is mainly on my chin and around nose.

I want a new skincare routine but do not know what to buy or what products are best?

What products do you use? I would ideally like a skincare set e.g. face wash with cleanser and moisturiser afterwards.

P.s. I do eat healthy and drink water but I wear make up so need to find something to clean that off and keep my skin clear.

cks.nice.org.uk/acne-vulgaris. Doctors appointment, you gave bacterial infection in your skin.

Don’t do what I did & spend the next 20 years cutting this that and the other out of your diet and using expensive skincare before going cystic and ending up in roaccutane at 41. I still have scarring.

What fluffy said.
Having done more or less the same with DD (not quite acne but severe breakouts) and gone through: La Roche Posay, (not bad initially when the breakouts were less severe) Dermalogica-eek, dreadful, contains various essential oils that made her face explode, Clinique- did nothing, Paula's Choice- did nothing, we are off to a dermatologist next week.

The skincare industry have done a number on us, “breaking out? Oh you need our skincare because your doing something wrong”.

Pus ANYWHERE else on the body, omg you need antibiotics.

katie2812 · 08/08/2020 14:57

Thank you 😊 I agree but it's so frustrating when I wear make up and you can just see all my spots and especially when I'm not wearing make up it's awful. I feel so insecure but I definitely will look into seeing my GP.

I know a pp said don’t waste time cutting things out of your diet but I do think it might be worth trying to cut out dairy for a while and see if that helps.
It worked for me and quite a few people have mentioned it on here. Obviously, it’s not the case for everyone but seems to be quite common.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/08/2020 15:05

Just ring up and book, it’ll be nice for them to have something they can help with when they’ve just lost so many patients in a pandemic.

katie2812 · 08/08/2020 15:21

I agree diet is such a big thing my friend cut out dairy and it worked wonders for her health but I am a sucker for chocolate though I don't have it often. I just want a nice good routine that will improve my skin

i’ve been using superdrug’s vitamin e range with a few of the ordinary products and my skin has never looked better. i’ve gone from having really dry dull skin with frequent breaks out on my chin and jaw, to clear glowing skin that is so soft. the vitamin e range is often on offer too so i got a whole new skincare routine for about £25. for the ordinary products you can check out deciem which has all the products and tells you what kind of issues they are best to combat.

My daughter had two years of skin breakouts/acne - she changed her diet etc. The tablets that doctor prescribed together with going on the pill are the only thing that has worked

Lots of acne threads recently! Fluffy is right, speak to a GP (I’m a GP who has also had acne for many years) this is something we deal with all the time and whilst there’s not a straightforward answer for everyone, there are lots of different options which can help.
Skincare wise keep it simple- I started a thread a few weeks ago having had a terrible breakout and sure I was heading for skin disaster (again) but looking back I honestly think it was due to switching to a facewash which was too harsh which irritated my skin which in turn let the bacteria get in. I’ve switched to a gentler one and my skin just instantly felt less irritated, a short course of antibiotics and it’s all looking good again (fingers crossed).

I’m currently using LRP toleraine face wash and freederm moisturiser which contains niacinamide (which there is some evidence for in acne). I moisturise because where I don’t have acne I actually have quite dry skin, but not everyone needs to. That’s it though. I use a prescribed gel at night called Epiduo. It’s VERY easy to get drawn in to spending a fortune on skincare products and I need reminding occasionally not to do that. I think really with acne prone skin you’re just trying not to make things worse with your skincare, there are some ingredients which might make a marginal difference but there’s no magic bullet. As above even when I realised my skincare was too harsh, I still needed the antibiotics to get it better.

taybert · 08/08/2020 16:22

And yes, dealing with acne is much nicer than some of the things we’ve had to do recently Sad Helping to sort out people’s skin, whether through what I am able to prescribe or by referring to dermatology is probably one of the things I get the most thank yous for too Smile

dontgobaconmyheart · 08/08/2020 16:29

Acne requires medical treatment to be honest OP, a skincare routine is unlikely to cut it. I suffer with mild acne and the only thing that ever properly worked was courses of antibiotics or going on the pill (yasmin)

I would switch to non comodegenic skincare to help yourself out and ensure your skin is well hydrated as dehydrated skin often responds well to moisture being added back in even when that feels counterproductive, it can control sebum production. Double cleansing and toning to ensure all makeup is off before bed, clean flannels/cloths daily and clean pillowcases are other small helpful changes.

Diet wise, no or minimal dairy also has an effect for me and I noticed a small difference when I gave up gluten (i had no choice in the matter as was diagnosed coeliac). But really, whatever I've used or bought or tried the only times I've had perfectly clear skin was when I was on prescribed medication for it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/08/2020 17:00

Just for balance I have an allergy to lactose so no dairy for 15 years & it made no difference to my skin.

RD15 · 08/08/2020 19:39

@taybert do you find the epiduo more effective than differin? I’ve been using differin for about 5 months and it’s cleared a lot of the congestion but I still get the more inflamed breakouts xx

RomComPhooey · 08/08/2020 19:47

Taybert - Is Dianette (combined oral contraceptive pill) still available? It worked wonders on my hormonal cystic acne in my 20s. I had to stop taking it because of troubling symptoms with migraine due to stroke risk.

Dermalogica products work for me, but are pricey.

katie2812 · 08/08/2020 20:54

Amazing advice really appreciate it. I went out today and bought clean and clear starter set only £7 but realised it's is comedogenic( I think which I'm annoyed at). I want to try ordinary as it is meant to be good

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/08/2020 21:25

It’s quite strong but it’s not going to do much long term.

There’s nothing wrong with your skincare, you have bacteria living in your skin that’s causing infection.

Paddy1234 · 09/08/2020 15:09

My daughter was on epiduo for a year - it took a good 2 months before it started working and be prepared for very dry, scaly outbreak - almost like a chemical peel. It did work but then after her skin was clear for a few months her acne came back and the epiduo didn't cut it.
Back to doctor for different routine and skin clear for now!

The ordinary is fantastic. Join the Facebook group and you will get loads of advice. I use niacinamide and it's great. But reducing sugar in your diet might help too.
