JIGSAW on verge of closing (?)

JinglingHellsBells · 07/08/2020 07:48

Article in the Mail which is a bit ambiguous (no surprise there.) Talks about closing stores and redundancies but unclear if ALL stores will close.

TBH I'm not surprised. I used to buy a couple of things from Jigsaw each year, around 10 years or more ago and loved their slightly quirkiness and lovely fabrics.

I've not bought anything now for around 5 years because I don't like being ripped off - £100+ for polyester whatever- sizes are huge on me (I'm short) and a lot of the styles are middle aged and frumpy. I am middle aged but not frumpy.

I think if they got their pricing right and stopped being greedy, they might have survived.

I'm not surprised, I used to buy quite a lot from them, particularly dresses. In the past few years most of the things l liked have been dry clean only and when I have bought something the quality has been poor for the price.

SerenityNowwwww · 07/08/2020 22:46

When I worked in the city it was one of the places I bought my suits - but the quality has definitely gone down and the prices rocketed.

Hyperfish101 · 07/08/2020 22:51

They are too expensive IMHO

Tempnamelady · 08/08/2020 07:30

Im waiting on a black military style winter coat and pussy bow silk blouse , both at 70 per cent off in the sale with an extra 10 per cent off, investment pieces really given its summer at the moment . I do like Jigsaw but think full price they are pretty steep.

appletreeinthesun · 08/08/2020 14:56

I loved Jigsaw in my twenties and thirties. Haven't bought anything for years, the clothes became far less interesting and quality went right down

BikeRunSki · 08/08/2020 15:00

They fit me really well, but I have only just got to a point where I can afford them out of sale times (even on sale tbh). I will miss them, but had seen/heard/read that they were in trouble a couple of months ago.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 08/08/2020 15:38

I'd miss Jigsaw. Don't rate their knitwear and t-shirts but their coats, accessories, silk and leather are excellent and their clothes fit me well. They pay more attention to detail than most high street stores too - I bought a shirt dress in the sale which has additional "hidden" buttons to stop it gaping.

jeremypaxo · 08/08/2020 15:46

Oh my god NO! I love Jigsaw, I buy everything from there! One of the very few high quality brands left on the high street Sad

InTheWings · 08/08/2020 15:58

I used to live in Jigsaw, years ago.

No appeal at all now.

JinglingHellsBells · 08/08/2020 17:56

Who's going to be next?

White Stuff maybe? (Overpriced tat now although 10-15 years ago it had class and was a load better.)

So many on this thread have said the quality is good but prices too high. So where are you all buying well made clothes good fabrics at Primark prices?!

I'll miss them.

noodlezoodle · 08/08/2020 19:29

That's sad. I used to get my suits there, really good quality, and I have a beautiful silk maxi dress that I got for half price in the sale. But it's been ages since I bought from them and I can't remember the last time I wore a suit!

JinglingHellsBells · 09/08/2020 08:07

My biggest moan about them is the sizing. I'm on the border of wearing petite lengths and the style of many dresses for years now has been shapeless and long. Very occasionally there is a fitted tea-dress each season but I won't pay £150 for a polyester summer dress. (unless it was for something really special like a wedding.)

Likewise, their chinos and jeans are almost £100.

That's not about quality. It's just madness.

As I've got older, there have been some trends that jigsaw have interpreted in a more gentle way, which has appealed to me. Mom jeans that are not ripped. White boots that are off white.
Agree that the vast majority of their range is over priced.

Why can fashion retailers never market to 40-50+ without doubling the price! Some of the fabrics are higher quality yes, but not always, and it's not as though these clothes are definitely not made in a sweatshop of some description.

Extracurricularfatigue · 09/08/2020 08:40

I used to go in and covet 2/3 of the stock. Now not so much. Their linen dresses were great for summer but have disappeared. I loathe polyester. I would miss knowing they were there though, and their work wear used to be lovely - I haven’t looked at it for so long I have no idea if it still is.

fizzpopbang123 · 09/08/2020 08:45

I've just had a look and my god, they must share the same stylist as M&S, it's dreadful! So, so frumpy, too many awful floral patterns muted colours that don't hit current palettes. A shame because on closer inspection, there are a lot of neutral basics in there that look fine.

It looks like they have decided to cater solely for an older age demographic, but I think they have misunderstood that lots of women nowadays don't want to, or have realised that they don't have to dress any differently to women of any other age. The era of shops catering for different age demos is passing. Just see numerous age related threads on here. They also cater for a more formal work environment which was falling out of fashion even before the pandemic caused us all to wfh.

I applaud their use of older and also diverse ethnicity models though.

JinglingHellsBells · 09/08/2020 08:51

TBH I think they have had poor management for a long time. They used to be owned by a husband and wife team who got into trouble, financially, and then I think they sold out to someone and the whole style of the clothing changed. When I bought from them 15 years ago, I could have bought everything on the rails. They had stuff no one else did- a bit quirkier than Hobbs for example.
Now, it looks anonymous and as a size 8, the cut swamps me in their dresses. I can in theory afford them, but I won't pay £150 for a blouse that's viscose or polyester. No thanks.

I have bought a lot from Jigsaw over the years but have always found the appeal variable. Sometimes I go in and want it all and other times want nothing. I like the staff too and have always found them helpful but not hovering. The clothes last really well but I have noticed lately that items that would have been cotton or silk are now polyester. And no, I won't pay those prices for polyester.
There are still some good bits: this morning I've ordered a cotton/silk dress for about £35!
Disaster now they've started discounting continually. They never did with just the two sales a year.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 09/08/2020 11:08

My biggest moan about them is the sizing. I'm on the border of wearing petite lengths and the style of many dresses for years now has been shapeless and long Us tall people need shops too!

JinglingHellsBells · 09/08/2020 11:45

Yeah I know that @SchnitzelVonKrumm but the average model now is anywhere from 5 10 to 6ft. On some of Jigsaw's images online it gives the model's height. That means they are wearing clothes for someone 7 inches at LEAST taller than me. Average height in UK used to be 5 4 and is now 5 5 -ish.
