How can I do this to my hair, but properly?

So my hair is fairly long (bra strap) very straight and smooth. It’s not fine as such but not very thick either, it’s in need of some body and texture. It doesn’t hold a curl no matter what I do, even my hair dresser says it’s impossible to curl. Whilst everyone else seems to be trying to get their hair smoother and sleeker, I’m trying to get mine bigger and rougher!

The only way I can ever get some body or wave into it is by washing it then either twist/scrunching into a bun with a scrunchie and leaving it to dry all day, or French plaiting it wet and again leaving it to dry (ideally all day and night and taking it out the next)

I’m fine doing this but wonder if there’s anything I could be doing to help it along? I have no knowledge of hair products (because my hair has always been so manageable I’ve not needed much) Are there texturising products? Something to give more body? Some other magical trick Im not aware of for flat, boring hair? Please share you wisdom with me!

I’d try some texturising spray or even just dry shampoo, just sprayed in at the roots for a bit of body. Mousse might help too (but probably not at the same time as the spray!), and maybe a wave spray/salt spray to try to encourage a bit of curl, I have one from Ouai which I have been really impressed by.

Thanks @SpuriouserAndSpuriouser salt spray might be good but there is not even a hint of a curl to encourage! It is very very straight. I do use lots of dry shampoo and wash maybe every 3rd/4th day, it helps but it still needs to have dried scrunched up to have much shape. If I blow dry I do it upside down but it still tends to be very smooth. I envy women with proper waves.

Hair powder. It makes your hair feel a bit claggy but a tiny bit and a little bit of backcombing really helps give that messy/beachy texture.

I have very fine straight hair.
I find the best product is a volumising mousse as it adds texture too. And then follow up with a volumising hairspray. I use one from the Living Proof which is pricy but very good

@Eminybob how do you use the mousse? I don’t want to end up crunchy
