Why does every single SPF make me break out?

I don’t want to have a sun-damaged raisin face, but I can’t stand the massive cystic spots I get whenever I use an SPF.

Has anyone else ever had this issue and overcome it? Any products I should be trying?

Have you tried La Roche Posay Antihelios? I got it because it doesn't sting my eyes (as much) but it also doesn't give me as many zits as other brands. Costs a bloody fortune though!

RUOKHon · 31/07/2020 23:12

I haven’t tried that one. Will check it out. Maybe I can get a sample from somewhere. I’m scared to shell out on one only to find that it still gives me spots!

Same as pp. La Roche Posay only one that doesn't break me out (or make my eyes water terribly).

SoLongFurlough · 31/07/2020 23:19

Another vote for the La Roche Posay it's generally on offer in Boots

Immigrantsong · 31/07/2020 23:20

LRP is on offer at escentual until midnight. 33 percent off. I stocked up.

RUOKHon · 31/07/2020 23:23

Excellent. Gonna bag myself some now!

I al also came on to say La Roche Posay, but see it’s already been recommended. I’ve had both SPF 30 and SPF 50, and both have been fantastic for me very sensitive face/eyes.
The face sized versions aren’t overly expensive

Akea · 31/07/2020 23:27

Do you have this problem regardless of the sunscreen type? I had problems with chemical spf creams but never with physical sunscreens.

Getitdonesharpish · 31/07/2020 23:30

I usually break out but find Dr Sam’s, skinceuticals and Roche excellent. Dr Sam’s lasts longer so I’m using that at the moment.

crosshatching · 31/07/2020 23:50

Yes I'm echoing @Akea sunscreens that have a physical base (usually zinc) are much better for my skin than chemical suncreens.

Tbh I’m pretty clueless so I’m not sure what the difference is between chemical and physical.

Usually it's that they're not being taken off well enough, do you do a double cleanse if you're wearing it?

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 01/08/2020 00:09

LRP Anthelios & Biore Watery Essence (from Japan) are the only ones that don't break me out. I use Biore for everyday casual use, LRP for if I'm going to be out all day, or at the beach etc. The Biore is less robust but has a nicer finish.

awishes · 01/08/2020 00:15

Heliocare is the only one which works for me

Isthisfinallyit · 01/08/2020 00:17

Another one here who can only tolerate la roche posay. It's expensive but it also spreads out very thin so the small bottle actually lasts longer than you would think.

Danglingmod · 01/08/2020 06:32

Exactly - LRP on your face and neck (I wear it every single day come rain or shine and two bottles lasts a year) and then something cheaper for the rest of the body which isn't so sensitive.

It's definitely to do with it being a physical barrier. I think Ultrasun is the same because I remembered I can wear that, too.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/08/2020 07:14

They mostly contain a lot of moisturiser because they think you’ll be wearing them in a hot country rather than Ruislip in February.

Have you tried ultrasun spf 50 mineral for face?. I found it quite drying. It’s cruelty free too.

It sticks to skin really well so you will have to cleanse twice to get it off.

UnaOfStormhold · 01/08/2020 07:21

I use Paula's choice spf 50 from their range for people with both aging skin and spots. Might be worth a look.

Goodebe · 01/08/2020 07:23

Try a child one like aveno kids - it’s the only one my Lo’s skin can tolerate and not mega bucks.

dudsville · 01/08/2020 08:41

I ended up shelling out for an expensive brand for my face. I'd accidentally been given an Elizabeth Arden spf cream once Sens utter worked so ive stayed with that.

TeddyIsaHe · 01/08/2020 09:04

Are you double cleansing at night to remove the spf properly?

If I don’t double cleanse I end up getting spots whichever I use.

VallarMorghulis · 01/08/2020 11:22

I have breakout-prone skin OP. I use P20 sunscreen and have no issues with it.

I wear it every day on my face and chest from about March to October. And I don't even cleanse my skin properly every day (but I rarely wear makeup).

As a bonus it's totally invisible and lasts all day. You can wear make up on top.

RogueV · 01/08/2020 11:23

Agree with la roche posay anthelios.
Make sure you double cleanse thoroughly and with a wash cloth after you have put sunscreen on

ejs11 · 01/08/2020 11:30

Neutrogena hydroboost spf 25 has been the best for me!

vixxo · 01/08/2020 12:55

La Roche Posay is good but contains alcohol. I recommend Heliocare Mineral Tolerance Fluid.
