Help please with foundation !

Butterflykiss00 · 30/07/2020 23:15

Could someone please help me find a foundation, I have oily, acne prone skin with huge pores!
I usually wear a powder (Avon mineral powder) but it always looks cakey, I would love to find a foundation that looks smooth and hides the oil but with good coverage and won't slip off easily!
Any ideas?

Your foundation probably isn't the problem. It's more likely that your skincare regime and products need overhauling.

What do you use am/pm?

Teacaketotty · 31/07/2020 09:58

I agree have a look at your skincare, it’s less work than trying to hide bad skin with make up trust me. Maybe try a charcoal face scrub, that sorts any oil out for me and a good but not heavy moisturiser.

Also using primer ahead of foundation will help shrink your pores and makes my make up stay on my face a lot better. Powder foundation doesn’t do anything for me, a decent oil free liquid foundation with a setting powder maybe a good idea for you?

Butterflykiss00 · 31/07/2020 23:49

Pm and am I use garnier micellar water and a cream from the doctor Called epiduo

Do you use a primer? Makes a huge difference. Fenty pro-filt'r is an amazing foundation that comes in a huge range of shades.

hilariousnamehere · 01/08/2020 00:33

Ooh what primer would you recommend?

Sorry to hijack thread OP! I have similar issues :(

WhoEatsPopTarts · 01/08/2020 00:38

A charcoal face scrub is absolutely the worst thing you use on any face, ever.

I’d suggest having a look at Caroline Hirons or Nadine Baggitt on YouTube for skincare. Caroline’s new book about skin is amazing and will explain why you shouldn’t use face scrubs.

Primer wise Benefit Pore-fessional mattifies (is that a word?!) my skin when it's a bit oily during my period. I love my make up but stopped being a snob when I found that the Wilko own brand primer seems to go on exactly the same and be just as good - definitely worth a go as it's so cheap I think about £3/4 and a little goes a long way. Feels amazing like silk when it's on.

Smashbox photo finish oil and shine control is fantastic too, really lovely finish and foundation doesn't get cakey. But obviously more pricey.

TheMumblesofMumbledom · 01/08/2020 09:09

So you have acne then. My dd uses the same cream.

This is going to be your issue then, your skin is probably dehydrated. A primer will help but it's your skincare routines that will make the biggest difference to how your foundation sits.

What's your budget? Skincare can range from really cheap (I'm a huge fan of some of the super cheap stuff) to high end luxury.

Ohjustme · 01/08/2020 09:50

I agree, start with your skin care. My skin in oily but was very dehydrated. I started using the Clarins SOS comfort mask and its completely changed my skin. For foundation i was recommended Revlon Colorstay for oily/combination skin on here and its amazing. Colour range isnt great and i actually ended up buying 2 shades to mix. I got married last Saturday, it waa roasting and my skin didn't look shiny at all.

My dd uses that Clarins mask too when she feels her skin is really dehydrated. She uses Glossier's milky jelly cleanser and a Paulas Choice salicylic one as her second cleans.

She's also found using a hylaronic acid was a game changer and uses the Clarins vegan moisturiser, red and white pot.

I'd invest in a good pore filling primer. Possibly benefit do one. In regards to full coverage for oily skin. Nyx matte but not flat is a great option or there's a Lancôme one, but I'm not sure of the name

ejs11 · 01/08/2020 11:29

As others have said, I'd take a look at your skincare and maybe adjust that! I also have oily skin and the best thing I ever did was stop using face washes/scrubs aimed at oily skin. One of the best things you can do for oily skin is use more oil-based products. Jojoba oil is great to moisturise your skin as it replicates natural skin oil, which will reduce your oil production as your skin feels that it already has enough (hope that makes sense!!). If you do want to exfloliate, use a chemical exfoliant such as lactic acid (which can be used daily) or the ordinary do a GREAT one (the red, BHA one). Estee Lauder Double wear has been the best foundation for me to use also! x

Butterflykiss00 · 02/08/2020 23:34

@backseatcookers I do sometimes but it makes the oil look worse and the foundation Cakey

@WhoEatsPopTarts I don't use charcoal face scrub , just what I said before, although I have tried one before ha!

@backseatcookers I will try that smash box one I think and the cheaper Wilko one

@TheMumblesofMumbledom yes I have acne unfortunately still at the age of 27! The unfortunate thing is my skin is still oily after using the acne cream, although it does peel some of my skin off. My budget is as cheap but still effective as possible

@Ohjustme I will try the revlon colour stay for oily skin and report back !

I will also be trying the clarinet sos comfort mask too

@ejs11 that actually makes sense, maybe all the years of using powder had caused my face to make excess oils to compensate!

Thankyou so much everyone this has been soo helpful I will try each one and report back !!

Ok, I've ordered the Fenty pro filter foundation , the benefit porefessional primer, and the revlon colourstay, just realised the colourstay was for normal/ dry skin 🤦🏻‍♀️

As an aside I would perhaps speak with your GP about acne treatments. It is personal choice but the pill and antibiotics both worked for me but only when I was taking them.

Does your skin feel tight after washing OP?

Foundations wise No. 7 beautifully Matte is nice, or Lancome Teint Idole.

Butterflykiss00 · 05/08/2020 23:52

Well I'm impressed with the revlon! Lasted all day, dried quick and ordered the perfect colour. Going to try the Fenty tomorrow hopefully it's the right shade!

Forgot to mention it hid my large pores without a primer! @Ohjustme thankyou

Butterflykiss00 · 05/08/2020 23:53

@dontgobaconmyheart no it doesn't feel tight after washing, doc has tried everything cream wise and antibiotics! Thankyou though

Ohjustme · 06/08/2020 03:34

Glad you like it! And such a good price too. Im glad i was recommended it on here as it's not one id ever have thought to have tried. Lasts well under masks too!

Butterflykiss00 · 06/08/2020 22:25

It does thankyou !
Tried Fenty today with porefessional primer and it creased around my eyes and the coverage wasn't very good by the end of day.
The primer however is amazing!!
Seemed to go on and last longer without primer but obviously my enlarged pores stuck out like a sore thumb.
