Garnier banana food mask - yay or nay?

SunshineChatter · 28/07/2020 17:33

A couple of weeks ago I bought the As I am cowashing conditioner based on reviews here. Well it did absolutely nothing for my hair. Nothing at all. I've since heard from people who also found it very disappointing.

I'm now thinking of trying the Garnier banana food mask to nourish my dry, long, coloured hair. But before adding another product to my bathroom shelves, I'd like to get feedback from people who have used it.

Does it work? If so, what differences have you seen? TTFN.

I found the same OP. I happen to have the hair mask already but haven't used it well. I don't really know what to do with it...it says it can be used as conditioner (which really makes me wonder if it's just the same as the conditioner that I didn't get on with?), mask and leave in conditioner. I used it as leave in but it made my hair greasy despite using it in tiny quantities. Disappointed.

lockdownalli · 28/07/2020 18:07

I have the Banana mask in my hoard. Might get around to using it next week.

Sorry OP I am not entirely clear what the product is that you used that did nothing for you?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/07/2020 18:27

That banana hair thing made my colour go really brassy - I binned it.

Hairthrowaway · 28/07/2020 18:29

I bought it after recommendations on here, tbh it doesn’t make a difference (as a hair mask treatment) and I have already started using something else. I regret buying it as the tub is massive so tedious to use up if you don’t like it.

booandbumpp · 28/07/2020 18:30

I use the Garnier banana food conditioner in a home made sea salt spray. I use like 2 tea spoons per half a litre of water, with a tea spoon of salt. I spray it in my hair on days I don't wash (following Curly girl method) and it works well! I found it I used it in my hands my hair was really heavy after!

I love it. I've got longish dark blonde highlighted hair and the banana Hair Food mask makes it very soft, without coating it in silicone like a lot of other masks.

greenette · 28/07/2020 18:35

I love it. My hair has become really dry and knitted since becoming pregnant (I have 3b/c curls) and it's deffo made an improvement.

I do leave it on for a few hours. I think it's better than the conditioner.

I also have a papaya one too

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 28/07/2020 18:42

I like it but just use it as a conditioner. It's actually cheaper than the banana food mask conditioner at £3.50 (off amazon) as opposed to £6. I originally was using the body shop banana conditioner but that's crazy expensive now.

WrinklesShminkles · 28/07/2020 18:42

I love it, mainly because I love the smell. It lingers on your hair so don't buy it if you don't like that. It's a good mask which I use once a week and it moisturises without weighing my fine hair down. I have decanted it into a smaller pot with a flip lid because the tub is enormous.

pinkrocker · 28/07/2020 20:41

I found it left my hair both greasy and dry! I won't use it again.

Pleasebuy · 28/07/2020 20:42

It was lovely for me as a leave in but not as a mask/conditioner.

Buggedandconfused · 28/07/2020 20:44

I use the Papaya one, I love it. I use as a normal conditioner. My hair is really glossy now.

PontiacBandit · 28/07/2020 20:46

I'm not impressed with the banana shampoo and conditioner, I tried it after recommendations. My hair didn't like it at all, it didn't feel clean after the shampoo and the conditioner wouldn't rinse out properly. My hair was greasy and drier afterwards as pp said. The cheap aldi colour shampoo and conditioner is much better.

Wolfgirrl · 28/07/2020 20:48

It's a yes from me. It smells amazing and leaves my (bleached) hair so soft and shiny.

notinthestarsigns · 28/07/2020 20:48

I love the Garnier banana one, it’s amazing for my hair, I used after conditioner.

BananaPop2020 · 28/07/2020 20:49

Smells lovely but no better than my normal conditioner.

Greenvalleysightseeker · 28/07/2020 20:52

I really like all the hair food conditioners, as another pp said it makes my hair soft without using silicone.
I think it's a fantastic product and would happily pay double for it.

CardinalCat · 28/07/2020 21:03

The first time I used it I was blown away! It made my hair so glossy but light and soft and it left a gorgeous but not overpowering scent.

However, on subsequent uses I've been a little underwhelmed. It's still really nice but I've never been stunned like I was with that first application. Maybe I need to just use it once a month...

Cotswoldmama · 28/07/2020 21:09

I've not tried it but L'Oréal dream lengths is amazing for me, might be worth a try if you haven't tried it.

Oly4 · 28/07/2020 21:26

I use it but it’s no better then a conditioner

Bananaman123 · 28/07/2020 22:51

I have in a different scent, greasy if put on roots at all, ok as an overnight mask under a cap. Ive also got the umberto giannini banana one and thats nice as a leave in conditioner, smells glod and not greasy.

The best treatment ive found is the philip kingsley elastisizer, my hair just looks and feels great after use but again i use overnight.

Flyinggeese · 28/07/2020 23:13

This is the best I’ve used www.amazon.co.uk/7th-Heaven-Repairing-Strengthening-Manuka/dp/B00W9KXOSO?tag=mumsnetforu03-21
Usually get it from Superdrug.

namechange3959682 · 29/07/2020 07:23

I like it mainly as a leave in conditioner. I also sometimes put it on my hair dry and leave it on overnight wash it out in the morning as a kind of intensive treatment. I have thick hair so it doesn't make my hair greasy.

SunshineChatter · 29/07/2020 09:01

Thank you everyone. I think I'll leave it then. @lockdownalli - the other product I mentioned is called 'As I am' cowash. Useless and expensive.

OP posts:
curiouslypacific · 29/07/2020 09:20

I use both products. The cowash instead of shampoo - but you need to give your scalp a good scrub to lift the dirt, more so than with standard foamy shampoos. Then the hair food mask as a conditioner. the cowash doesn't contain the sulfates that are needed to strip silicons out of your hair, so you can only use with non-silicon based products (particularly conditioners, but a lot of styling sprays too). It's much gentler on your hair than normal shampoos, but you do still need to use in conjunction with conditioner for soft shiny hair, like any shampoo.

My hair is fine and somewhat curly and they work great for me. I can now wash every other day wheras before it used to be daily as the silicons in most conditioners make my hair look really lank within a day.
