I feel like I'm reasonably good with makeup and clothes, but I've never been one of those people who are good at doing their hair. I mean, I have a nice cut and balayage, but I'm hopeless at styling it and tbh I spend much less time and effort on it vs skincare or makeup.
If you have fabulous hair, what do you do to it? My hair is shoulder length, pretty straight, medium thickness. It looks great when the hairdresser does it, but when I'm in charge it's a bit meh. I want it to be swishy!

Use good hair products and treat is as well as your skin. Choose a style that doesn't take much maintenance or styling so it always looks good. Regular trims. You get out what you put in. Be kind and it'll love you back.

I swear by Philip Kingsley elasticizer. I use it twice a week and honestly it looks amazing even when I do nothing with it now!

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/07/2020 16:03

My hairdresser today told me that the products you use on your hair are more important than even the colour. Do you use anything on it? I Olaplex 2 mine overnight once a month and use the aveda damage remedy hair repair on it after every wash. I also let it dry naturally whenever possible and never heat it without heat protection spray on it.

My hair is super swishy. I can hear it swishing if I touch it.

schmalex · 28/07/2020 16:50

Thank you all.
I have just got some Olaplex 3 so will definitely give it a try (I think it's similar to Elasticizer?). I think this is where I'm going wrong tbh - I just haven't ever bothered much with hair products.
Your hair sounds gorgeous @HasaDigaEebowai!
Any recommendations for heat protection spray?
Also, I think I need some kind of volumising product but don't really know where to start...

HasaDigaEebowai where do you get your Olaplex 2. It is usually for salon use only. I have O3 but would love to get hold of O2

Bearnecessity · 28/07/2020 22:19

Kerastase every time.

Wolfgirrl · 28/07/2020 22:28

Put it in a high ponytail. Grab thin strands of the ponytail and curl them with tongs until it is all curled. Let your hair down and voila! Swooshy lazy curls. Honestly it takes 2 minutes.

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/07/2020 06:39

HasaDigaEebowai where do you get your Olaplex 2

Until a couple of months ago you could buy the big 2 litre bottles on amazon. Think they were about £80 but you get a lot for that. Olaplex 3 is basically watered down Olaplex 2 and so if you can get hold of 2 its well worth it. If they've stopped it being sold to the public I'll be cross.

schmalex · 29/07/2020 08:43

Ooh @wolfgirl, sounds like something even I could do! Thanks!

I had hair problems for a few years really. I did lots of masks, oil and so on to treat it. And then when I was bored with it, I stopped doing anything. I just clean with shampoo once in 2-3 days, brush it wet and go sleep. It is perfect now really, straight and bright. Just try not to overload your hair, it helped me.

Gamble66 · 29/07/2020 15:45

Space nk for Olaplex
No its not like elastisizer - Olaplex repairs bonds elastiser restores protien and hydrates - great individually - great using both
Karatease is good stuff - all thier lines
L'Oréal extraordinary oil is amazing stuff for cosmetic repairs
A Dyson airwrap or babbyliss big brush would up your styling even if you are a bit crap x

missfliss · 29/07/2020 15:48

My hair is my best feature - it's thick and abundant and in good nick despite being bleached. The rest of me is also abundant but not in a good way..

Tips:

Olaplex 3 overnight once a week
Silk scrunches in a topknot to sleep in
Dyson airwrap for smooth and damage free hair
Sulphate free shampoo

gonshite · 29/07/2020 16:20

I have good hair or so I'm told. Similar to Giseles so coloured. I use Kerastase & love Kiehls olive oils range. Very rarely use heat on it or brush it.

If I want to look a bit more groomed. I blow dry it 90% dry & twist it & tie it up for a bit. When I let it down I have nice big waves without having to do much.

schmalex · 29/07/2020 17:28

Thanks all, lots to work with here! I would love a Dyson airwrap.

A Babyliss Big Hair has made all the difference to mine. Smooths out the frizz and makes it look styled with minimal effort.

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/07/2020 19:07

See I hate the babyliss big hair. It does absolutely nothing other than tangle my hair up (I do have a lot of hair though)

RiverCrossing · 29/07/2020 19:21

My hair has dramatically improved over lockdown/working from home since March and the difference there is much, much less heat. People have started commenting on how good it looks and that honestly is the difference.

Geppili · 30/07/2020 01:00

I have been taking menopace multivitamins and oil of evening primrose everyday since January and that has helped both hair and skin.

GlamGiraffe · 30/07/2020 02:33

Kerastase (the bright pink one) and a babyliss big hair. Makes drying and styling at the same time super easy (evenvthe hairdressers say I have difficult hair) it's a revelation. Definitely makes for swisher hair as it smoothed and volumes salon style I swear by a Mason and Pearson brush (make sure you try the correct one for your hair type n in my case a large bristle and nylon) I have several and rotate them. They last forever. No other brand works as well they are absolutley worth the money.

HasaDigaEebowai · 30/07/2020 08:58

I have been taking menopace multivitamins and oil of evening primrose everyday since January and that has helped both hair and skin.

I also take biotin and silica, both of which are good for hair skin and nails.

Polkadotdelight · 30/07/2020 11:42

Can anyone recommend which kerastase to buy? I looked on amazon but there's loads.

SundayReilly · 30/07/2020 12:35

No heat
Dry naturally
Product to give volume or emphasise curl / wave /texture or highlight sleekness or shine if very straight.
Work with its natural state
Your hair dresser should help with this
You shouldn't need masses of tools or products .
Condition condition condition!
Hot oils
Garner hair food
Phillip Kingsley if you can afford
Clip up
Try a pony tail
Grips to edge little bits around your face
Experiment
Last resort book a cut - usually looks fab when I do that !!

gonshite · 30/07/2020 13:47

@Polkadotdelight try a few different ones? I like the green one (strength & repair) & orange (nourish). Didn't love the volume one.

this place often has discount
