Is £110 too much to have my hair done?

optimisticpessimist01 · 26/07/2020 20:09

I've been going to the same hairdressers for years. They're in the centre of a big city in the North of the UK. I trust my hairdresser but it's just so expensive to maintain that the money could be much better spent elsewhere. I'm not rich by any means either so I could really do without spending so much money on my hair

I go every 8-12 weeks and I get dirty blonde highlights, toner and a cut and blow dry into a long bob. I don't know if it would be a risk to find somewhere out of the city that's cheaper because I don't know how standard my hair appointments are. (I.e. is there a risk of going elsewhere and them horrendously messing it up because I have highlights and a blunt bob cut?)

Would you find someone cheaper or stick with someone you trust?

FWIW, I'm never actually blown away by my hair when I have it done, but I'm not sure if that's me having too high expectations or whether I'm not getting my money's worth. Thank you

I pay £100 for mine - highlights/ cut and style. Have done for a few years at various places. This is London though.

isabellerossignol · 26/07/2020 20:12

I don't think the amount of money spent is necessarily indicative of the quality of the cut and/or colour. The worst cut I ever had in my life was the most expensive.

But then on the other hand, it is always a risk to try someone new, so it depends if you are willing to take the risk.

Mamma92 · 26/07/2020 20:17

I would say that's average price for the service you are getting

cherrypiepie · 26/07/2020 20:20

It really depends if it is affordable for you. If you can afford It I think it's a fair amount. If you feel it's expensive stretch to more usually every 12 weeks rather than 8. Why don't you book a free consultation at a few other salons when you have just had it done and see what they say and how much it costs.

cptartapp · 26/07/2020 20:21

I pay similar for three colours/foils cut and blow dry. Long hair. NW.
I discovered L'Oréal root spray during lockdown and will be extending my usual 8-10 weekly hair appointment using it from now on. I reckon it can buy me an extra month.

Pipandmum · 26/07/2020 20:23

Maybe you need a change if you arent 100% satisfied. I don't think you'll find it much cheaper elsewhere, but maybe you need a new colour and cut with your current stylist.

optimisticpessimist01 · 26/07/2020 20:27

Thank you everyone for responding

When I tell friends, who don't live in the city centre, how much I pay for my hair they're always flabbergasted. So I was unsure if I was paying for a premium location not just the services that I have. I might go around and have a couple of consultations at other places. I wouldn't mind paying that much money if I felt amazing after I had my hair done but I feel like other people always look better than I do after having their hair done

If you're not going grey you might get a bit longer out of it by having a root smudge done with your normal highlights

Mummyme87 · 26/07/2020 20:39

Sounds average for what you are getting, and like you said, you know and trust her.

I just paid £208 today after a 10% discount 🤢 For a full head balyage, toner, treatment, cut, wash and blow dry. That’s in London at a well known chain

Bella2020 · 26/07/2020 20:48

That seems an awful lot for a salon in the north to me. I'd be gobsmacked, too, if one of my friends there had told me that!

I think having a chat with some out of town based stylists is a good idea.

emma6776 · 26/07/2020 20:49

I pay about £150 for a half head of highlights and cut in Edinburgh. However I only go every 12-16 weeks and quite often only need t-bar highlights at that.

Justjoshin22 · 26/07/2020 20:50

I pay £95 for a place in Central belt, Scotland but not city centre. That’s for cut and colour, including highlights and I think it’s decent value. I go every 6 weeks or so. You could try somewhere else to compare?

Passthewinebottle · 26/07/2020 20:53

I'm South coast and I paid £160 for this. It was a fabulous cut and colour though. Only because I had vouchers totalling £140 however! It can't hurt to ask around; I'd expect to be v happy for £110 OP...
optimisticpessimist01 · 26/07/2020 20:57

@Bella2020 I thought that too, I'm in Sheffield too, if it was Manchester I would understand it more

I paid £65 for half head highlights (using 3 colours), toner, cut and blow dry. I don't normally need a toner but with lockdown the ends of my hair looked brassy blonde.
This is out of town in the North.

PrincessMaryaBolkonskaya · 26/07/2020 21:15

I pay £175 for half head of highlights and a cut. That’s at a chain. I could pay more at one of the swanky indies in my city.

£100 doesn’t seem too bad.

AriettyHomily · 26/07/2020 21:19

Cheaper than where I live. It's why I'm glad. I developed an allergy to hair dye!

ShirleyPhallus · 26/07/2020 21:22

It’s a “how long is a piece of string” type question

I spend a sickening amount on my colour but only cos I’ve had hideous highlights from chain salons before so only trust my hairdresser. She does such good colour I only need to go about once a year as it grows out so naturally. So the £300+ is worth it to me.

Saying that, you’ll get some responses saying anything over £12 is a total waste of money so it really depends on you tbh

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 26/07/2020 21:24

I'm east central Scotland in a larger town & if I went to the salon I'd be around the same as you OP thankfully my hairdresser is DD's best friend so I just pay for the stuff she needs at the trade shop.

I have a full head of blonde highlights & I have a lot of hair (we counted once & there were over 200 foils Blush), toner & cut - last time I went to a salon I was £100 & wasn't happy with the result.

BellaVita · 26/07/2020 21:30

I am in the North and pay around £115 for root cover/cut/blow dry. More if I need foils/toner/treatment.

GemmeFatale · 26/07/2020 23:05

I pay £70 for full head highlights and a cut. Cotswolds, mobile hairdresser.

I’ve paid over double and not felt as happy with the result.

If you have friends you think are getting a better result ask for a recommendation

nanbread · 27/07/2020 00:59

Doesn't sound like that much tbh. Round here most salon cuts are between £35-65 and highlights about £50-90+

SimplySteveRedux · 27/07/2020 01:35

DD pays £90 for similar. West Midlands independent.

Pieceofpurplesky · 27/07/2020 01:59

I think it's a huge amount and is more than my monthly food budget. However if you can afford it and are comfortable stick with it - or try someone else - it's hair and it will grow!

Bingowin · 27/07/2020 02:13

Sounds reasonable. I'm in London and have a mobile hair dresser come to me.
I pay £70 for whole head and cut
