Posh restaurant - please help me find something to wear!

Pigletpoglet · 26/07/2020 11:19

So DH and I are booked into a posh, modern, 'edgy' restaurant in a couple of weeks (staycation treat), but I am none of those things.
I have jeans and hoodies for home and boring knee length skirts and fine knit jumpers for work, with the occasional pair of coloured tights.
What on earth should I wear?!
I'm mid-forties, 5'7'', big size 12 (long legs, big bum, small waist, medium boobs, but not a flat tummy). Fitted stuff suits me better - I think my shoulders must be quite big as anything floaty makes me look enormous. No heels - absolute flats are a must.
I lean towards more hippie-ish stuff than smart and elegant or 50s bombshell stuff. Never wear makeup.
I don't even have a clue where to start - any ideas?! Help!!

A silky top or shirt would look like with those trousers. This kind of thing

maybe not your style but I'm a similar build to you bought a khaki jumpsuit from Whistles, currently in the sale, and a boring black dress from Benetton on amazon, both look good with silver Birkies and a silver necklace.

Lockdownhairdontcare · 27/07/2020 19:34

DH and I love a treat restaurant but don’t overdress.

I am Apple shaped size 16 and need fitted top or end up tent like!
I tend to go with maxi shirt dresses/ jeans, silk top and blazer/ wide leg trousers, silk T-shirt... always flats (sandals or ankle boots)... well groomed hair and natural make up.

nanbread · 27/07/2020 19:38

What about this jumpsuit? Got a slightly hippyish vibe IMO thanks to the print and cotton linen mix, belt will show off your waist too

Thanks for the replies guys! The trousers are ordered, and once I've got them I'll look at what shaped top to get. I haven't worn anything tucked in since about 1989 so even that is going to be a push!
Molton - I actually really like those shoes, but I've never owned animal print anything, so I think they would be too far out of my comfort zone. I have other Birks and a couple of other options, so I think I will try on once I can see what things look like with the trousers.
Would this be too baggy with the trousers?
Thanks Tapert!

Where's the restaurant?

Sooverthemill · 27/07/2020 21:02

@Pigletpoglet I think if you are going to the lovely wide leg trousers you should have a more fitted top. Look on Pinterest. What about a short sleeve blouse? Maybe in silk? Or a silk camisole with a jacket like a kimono over? You do need to make sure you will wear what you buy and you feel comfortable. If you can afford to, I would buy lots of options and do yourself w fashion show. Any reason why you are leaning towards Uniqlo?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/07/2020 21:19

No to both of the t-shirts, and no to Birkies.

The trousers are lovely.

Something like this maybe?

Or a Boden Ravello?

Pigletpoglet · 27/07/2020 22:14

Just off - it's in a fairly gritty area of a city centre.
Remus - love the Boden top! Might order that...

OP posts:
Pigletpoglet · 27/07/2020 22:19

Soover - I think you are right. I want to find something that I am comfortable in and will wear again, but also something that feels like I have made an effort for something special... Tricky!
The Boden top fits this though - I can see myself wearing it with jeans another time.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/07/2020 22:33

Oooooh - it's not the new place in Birmingham, by any chance?
Glad you like the top - they are a nice bridge between smart and casual. I've been meaning to get a black one for ages - must do so!

sadie9 · 27/07/2020 23:41

Those coated 'leather look' skinny jeans always look good with a shirt or top.

Sooverthemill · 28/07/2020 07:00

I have a couple of the Boden ravello and do wear it out for dinner with black trousers or jeans.

Sooverthemill · 28/07/2020 07:02

But they have this now which also looks like it would be suitable

Sooverthemill · 28/07/2020 07:04

Ooh now you've got me rummaging in their new in
this looks like a twist on the ravello which is lovely

Pigletpoglet · 29/07/2020 17:23

Those Boden tops are really lovely!

Fitted and hippie, I’m sure you will find a lovely dress from Joe Browns...

kazza6 · 02/08/2020 17:48

As a man, I would say that you should wear something that makes you feel comfortable and sexy and that is smart enough. If you feel confident then you will exude that and be your true self.

AlexisOnFire · 02/08/2020 17:53

We're members of an 'edgy' club, including restaurants for DH's work networking. That's not a stealth boast, we'd much rather be in the local curry house.

The vibe is definitely not try hard. Most women wear jeans, clean smart shoes understated but expensive and a cool, boho-hippy shirt, often silky or detailed. Think 'oh this old thing? I just threw it on'.

I'd normally recommend Anthropologie but can't find anything I'd recommend. Or there's Free People.

This is over £100 but it's a good example of what I mean Free People 1

Or this Free People 2

All Saints, Jigsaw, Ted Baker, Sezane, Comptoir Des Cotonniers, Reiss are also strong possibles. ASOS has a good selection.

neonjumper · 02/08/2020 18:15

It's really difficult to suggest what to wear as we don't know where you're going .
As others have said nobody really dresses up in the conventional sense .
For example , just before lockdown DH and I went to Claridges for dinner ... I wore pointed black flat pumps , orange palazzo pants and a large polka dot skinny polo neck jumper with very large hoop earrings . DH wore fitted suit trousers , slip on shoes and a fitted shirt , open collar .
We went onto Sketch for drinks .
I think jumpsuits either look very overdressed or too too casual and high heels bit 90s .
We are early 50s .

Palaver1 · 02/08/2020 18:49

Jump suits are very versatile depending on the material and cut .

XingMing · 02/08/2020 21:04

Dinner at Claridges is not everyday stuff if you live in Cornwall. I want to know exactly what you ate @neonjumper. Could not give a stuff about the clothes, but the food...........

I bought this about two months ago, you can dress it up with heels, or dress down with flip flops or wedges. I went out for the first time on Saturday to a restaurant and put this on with heels. Very comfortable to wear, I'm 5'6 in height too.

Posh restaurant - please help me find something to wear!
