Bar shampoo

Help please

I bought a lovely shampoo bar in Shetland last week, hoping to cut down on the amount of plastic I use!
But having now washed my hair twice, it makes it horrible squeaky, and very tangly.

I have read a few blogs about having to prep your hair for this. But to be honest, several rinses of vinegar and bicarb etc don’t
1 - sound appealing
2 - feels like a bloody faff
3 - more products, so more waste,,,some what defeats the point.

Will this get better on its own, do I keep trying.

Help me hive mind

Another one to try is kinkind. I sometimes switch between that and liquid shampoo. No problem switching, no transition

I use a children’s shampoo bar, which is great for my fine hair and leaves it clean and soft. It’s palm oil-free as well.

I tried shampoo bars but like you didn't get on with them. I now reuse a plastic bottle as there is a shop near me that sells shampoo refills and things are much better. Might be worth researching if there is somewhere similar near you. Best of both world's - no endless plastic waste & an actual shampoo as opposed to a bar.

I really wish some of the big names did shampoo bars. I love aveda shampoo but hate the plastic. I've tried switching to bars but they all appear to be gimmicky (seriously Lush? Who wants bright pink shampoo? Hardly natural...)

Lampan · 15/03/2021 03:40

The blue one from Lush made my hair amazing (probably better than any other shampoo) but I’ve stopped using it as it completely wrecked my hands and made them so dry and rough. Maybe would be OK if you didn’t use it every day though.

MarieFromStTropez · 15/03/2021 07:01

The problem with Lush products is that they are full of nasty ingredients. The main ingredient in their shampoo bars is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS). There are so much better shampoo bars on the market.

Just ordered a free guurum(? Sp) bar. I have an itchy scalp so if anyone can recommend a bar that lathers well and reduces itch, I'm sold!!

HummusAndCarrotSticks · 15/03/2021 13:55

I was coming on to recommend gruum, but I've been beaten to it by alias Smile

I tried Lush first 🤢. Awful. Ruined my hair. Never again. Load of shit and I usually like their stuff.

Tried the hydrating shampoo and conditioner from gruum and it is as good as liquid.

MissBattleaxe · 15/03/2021 15:28

Has any mentioned Soho Soap yet? I've got three fio tehri shampoo bars and they make my hair really shiny. They lather really well and rinse well too. I've just been sent a gruum shampoo bar as a gift from a friend and that's lovely too- I've got the coconut one.

The Soho Soap Co shampoo bar lasted me about 6 weeks with daily use and smelled of Jasmine. The scent doesn't linger in your hair as long as it does with LUSH, but I find them easier to use and much cheaper.

Has anyone tried ethique? Am considering but would welcome any thoughts...

Yourownpersonaljesus · 15/03/2021 18:12

I am currently using Ethique bars. They are quite a faff to use (as any shampoo and conditioner bars would be for my long thick hair) but leave my hair looking and feeling just the same as liquid products. I do like them but have just bought some Friendly bars for when the Ethique bars run out as they are much cheaper.

FreshFaceTime · 15/03/2021 18:13

I use the green Ethique conditioner bar called Guardian that's meant for dry hair. My hair isn't particularly dry but I like it more than I liked the bar for "normal" hair. I also liked their pinkalicious shampoo bar but wasn't quite as sold on that so tried one on Amazon called Shine On, which is cheaper and I prefer that. Took me ages to find a shampoo/conditioner bar combination I was happy with. Wouldn't go back now.

Thanks both. That's v helpful and encouraging.

TheIceTree · 15/03/2021 18:32

@claireb707 the first ingredient listed for Soul and Soap is Sodium Coco-Sulfate?

ElderMillennial · 15/03/2021 18:42

Ethique are nice.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/03/2021 19:01

I'm also a fan of Gruum shampoo - I use their brown one (is it coconut, I can;t remember?) and it leaves my long, thick, coarse, frizzy hair very clean and feeling nice.

But...

I can't get on with the "matching" conditioner bar at all and have reverted to bottle conditioner. It just didn't tame my hair one bit.

Chimoia · 15/03/2021 19:05

The 2 in 1 from Earth Bitz works without a transition period and they do some nice vinegar rinse prod to use with it occasionally. It suits my hair well.

lifeinlimbo2020 · 15/03/2021 20:18

I use this one and I love it. Less than four quid with next day delivery too 👍👍👍
